Research team finds entanglement of many atoms

Quantum Cat

Be it magnets or superconductors: materials are known for their various properties. However, these properties may change spontaneously under extreme conditions. Researchers at the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) and the Technische Universität München (TUM) have discovered an entirely new type of such phase transitions. They display the phenomenon of quantum entanglement involving many atoms, which previously has only been observed in the realm of few atoms. The results were recently published in the scientific journal Nature.

New Fur for the Quantum Cat

In physics, Schroedinger's cat is an allegory for two of the most awe-inspiring effects of quantum mechanics: entanglement and superposition. Researchers from Dresden and Munich have now observed these behaviors on a much larger scale than that of the smallest of particles. Until now, materials that display properties like, e.g., magnetism have been known to have so-called domains - islands in which the materials properties are homogeneously either of one or a different kind (imagine them being either black or white, for example). Looking at lithium holmium fluoride (LiHoF4), the physicists have now discovered a completely new phase transition, at which the domains surprisingly exhibit quantum mechanical features, resulting in their properties becoming entangled (being black and white at the same time). "Our quantum cat now has a new fur because we've discovered a new quantum phase transition in LiHoF4 which has not previously been known to exist," comments Matthias Vojta, Chair of Theoretical Solid State Physics at TUD.

A dead humpback whale washed ashore at Manhattan Beach in Half Moon Bay Sunday.

The carcass was first reported floating offshore at around 3 p.m.

The Marine Mammal Center's necropsy team is working to find out more about the whale, including cause of death. Officials said whether a necropsy happens this week, it will depend on the tides.

Man found dead believed to be victim of dog attack in Nassau, The Bahamas

dog attack
The man found dead on a sidewalk in the capital over the weekend may have been attacked by dogs, according to police.

Officers found a man believed to be in his late 50s to early 60s lying on the sidewalk on the southern side of Palm Tree Avenue around 4:00 am on Saturday.

The victim's body reportedly had severe injuries to his lower extremities that appear to be consistent with bite marks.

Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said: "Police are actively investigating and encouraging members of the public who have overly aggressive or uncontrollable dogs that they cannot restrain in aggressive situations or circumstances, consistently bark, are always agitated, fight, create disturbances with other animals, or try to attack people, to ensure their yards are properly secured and enclosed to prevent their animals escaping.

Boerboel dogs maul girl (6) to death in Zimbabwe

In another spine chilling incident, two vicious Boerboel dogs mauled a six-year-old girl to death on Wednesday at the family's rented home in Matsheumhlophe suburb. This is the second incident in Bulawayo where dogs have killed people following the death of Mr John Gavhera of Selbourne Park who was mauled by his two Boerboels after they reportedly mistook him for an intruder in May this year.

In the latest fatal incident, the girl, Moleen Ndlovu was home alone in a cottage which her parents are renting in Matsheumhlophe when the two dogs owned by the landlord ripped her neck which led to her death at around 7AM. While dogs are meant to protect people, dog trainers and experts have warned that some of the breeds can be aggressive to people including their owners.

Some of the breeds considered to be aggressive and dangerous include Boerboels, Pit Bulls and Rottweilers, among others. Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident yesterday.

A man was mauled to death by dogs in Channelview on Friday morning, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said a person driving home from work at about 1:45 a.m. spotted a man lying on the road in the 15700 block of Garlang Street.

Deputies responded to the scene and, upon arrival, found an unresponsive man in his late 30s with multiple dog bites, according to HCSO.

First responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

Deputies said they believe the victim was riding his bicycle when dogs attacked him.

Dog enters home, kills 11-year-old girl in Trinidad

dog attack
A dog identified as a mix between an American Bully and an American Bulldog escaped its kennel and entered a house, where it chased a child into a bedroom and mauled to death the 11-year-old girl.

Rachael Bhagwandeen had no chance to escape the powerful animal, and not even an attempt by responders, including the child's own mother, could tear the animal away from its attack.

Only the dog's owner could intervene. By then it was too late.

Her mother Seema Bhagwandeen said she ran into the house to find her child had been savaged.

She said her bleeding daughter reached out to her.

Lab-made mouse embryos grew brains and beating hearts, just like the real thing

The embryos survived for 8.5 days.

Scientists coaxed mouse stem cells to grow into synthetic embryos that began developing hearts and brains, just like the real thing.

The lab-made embryos, crafted without any eggs or sperm and incubated in a device that resembles a fast-spinning Ferris wheel full of tiny glass vials, survived for 8.5 days. That's nearly half the length of a typical mouse pregnancy. In that time, a yolk sac developed around the embryos to supply nutrition, and the embryos themselves developed digestive tracts; neural tubes, or the beginnings of the central nervous system; beating hearts; and brains with well-defined subsections, including the forebrain and midbrain, the scientists reported in a study published Thursday (Aug. 25) in the journal Nature.

"This has been the dream of our community for years and [a] major focus of our work for a decade, and finally, we've done it," senior study author Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz, a developmental and stem-cell biologist with labs at the University of Cambridge, UK, and the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said in a statement.

Although the two recent studies produced similar embryos, the experiments started out slightly differently. In the Cell study, the researchers started by coaxing mouse stem cells into a naive state from which they could morph into any cell type, such as heart, brain or gut cells. From there, the team divided these naive cells into three groups. In one group, they switched on genes to form the placenta, and in another group, they switched on genes to make the yolk sac. The last group they left alone to develop into embryos.

Police probe whether dogs mauled 73-y-o to death in Jamaica

dog attack
Tragedy struck in the Vanzie Land community of Falmouth, Trelawny, early Tuesday morning when a 73-year-old woman was killed, reportedly by a pack of dogs that jumped the wall of their owner's property.

The woman, who was physically challenged and walked with the assistance of a stroller, was identified by relatives as Cathlene Jump, a resident of Vanzie Land.

Reports are that about 6:30 a.m., residents heard screams of anguish a short distance away from Jump's house. They found the body of Jump, whose clothes were partially ripped off, lying in a pool of blood on the roadway.

The body had several deep wounds.

Postal worker dies after dog attack in Putnam County, Florida

mmmmmmmmm
A postal worker died Monday after being mauled Sunday by several dogs in the Interlachen Lake Estates area, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, the Sheriff's Office identified Pamela Jane Rock, 61, of Melrose, as the mail carrier attacked Sunday afternoon by the dogs after her vehicle broke down.

Deputies said they responded to Walker Drive, found the woman on the ground with severe bleeding and started to provide first aid assistance, including applying tourniquets, until rescue units arrived. Deputies said she was transported to HCA Florida Putnam Hospital by ambulance and then flown to a trauma center in Gainesville in critical condition. She later died around 7:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Sheriff's Office.
