Thousands of dead fish washed ashore along southern Thai beach

MMMM
Thousands of dead fish, crabs and prawns were scattered down the picturesque Thung Wua Laen beach in the southern Thai province of Chumphon Thursday.

They were killed by toxic algae bloom known as the red tide, which depletes oxygen in the water and "prevents fish from breathing through their gills", local fishing authority Boonyawat Thonghom told AFP.

Local residents have been picking up dead fish along the two-kilometer stretch of white sandy beach.

"We advise the locals not to consume the fish as the algae might be toxic, but using them as fertilizer is OK," said Boonyawat.

Blinken & Biden: Having your duck and eating it too

I guess Anthony Blinken just loves Chinese food. Because that's all he got from the Chinese on his visit to Beijing.

After a sit-down with the Chinese who explained the facts of life to him, he was rewarded with Beijing Duck. But no doggy bag. In fact, he didn't get to take anything home at all. Naturally, his huge, incestuous political family in both parties bitched about not getting souvenirs.

Blinkey's statement "We do not support Taiwan independence? has been widely reported.

Of course, not the rest of that statement.

"We remain opposed to any unilateral changes to the status quo by either side. We continue to expect the peaceful resolution of cross-strait differences. We remain committed to meeting our responsibilities under the Taiwan Relations Act, including making sure that Taiwan has the ability to defend itself."

This is known as having your Beijing Duck and eating it too.

Brazil cattle die as cold temperatures batters large beef state

mmmmmm
Nearly 3,000 head of cattle died from hypothermia in Brazil's Mato Grosso do Sul state in recent days, according to a statement posted on the website of local veterinary services on Wednesday.

The deceased animals represent a tiny fraction of Brazil's cattle herd of about 224 million head and their deaths and are unlikely to compromise beef production at meatpackers like JBS, which operate in the state.

But they drew attention as they are uncommon. Temperatures in the most affected areas ranged from 6 to 9 degrees Celsius (43 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit), according to local press reports.

Alcides Torres, owner of agribusiness consultancy Scot Consultoria, said local cattle breeds can withstand the low temperatures of the country's winter, which started today.

"Brazil exports live cattle for slaughtering in Turkey below snow," Torres said. "It was the cold but there was something else."
