Floods in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia affect over 60,000 with 5 fatalities reported

At least 5 people have lost their lives and thousands of homes have been damaged after days of flooding in West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia.

According to disaster management officials, flooding has affected parts of West Lombok, East Lombok, Bima, North Lombok and Sumbawa since 05 December. Heavy rain caused flash flooding and rivers to overflow. The situation was worsened by high tides in some coastal areas.

The five fatalities were reported in West Lombok Regency, where around 25,000 people have been affected and 6,500 displaced. Around 448 homes and 3 bridges suffered severe damage. Eight people were reported injured and one missing and search operations were continuing.

Woman dies after vicious dog attack in Franklin County, Missouri

Franklin County, Mo., Sheriff Steve Pelton announced that a 61-year-old woman - Leann Gratzer - was killed after an attack by a group of dogs outside a relative's home.

The sheriff said the tragedy occurred around 5 p.m. Monday in the 2400 block of Highway TT. As of now, no criminal charges have been issued after the attack.

The sheriff added that deputies were told Gratzer was attacked when she was en route walking to a relative's home. Gratzer was critically injured in the attack and later died.

The medical examiner's office continued the investigation after her death.

The sheriff said his office's thoughts and prayers go to the victim's family.

It has already been a remarkable December for snow in the Pyrénées - but more heavy falls are forecast from Wednesday, while the Alps are also set to enjoy more fresh snow.

The weekend was marked by sustained snowfall in the Pyrénées, with an average of between 50cm and 70cm of snow at altitudes above 1200m, rising in some areas towards western areas of the mountain chain to 1m.

According to Météo-France, the level of snowfall in the west of the Pyrénées is remarkable for the time of year, especially since accumulations were considered 'very low' as recently as November 24th. The forecaster said the winter snow covering below 2,000m - the average now is 1m at 1500m - is among the best for the beginning of December and equivalent to normal levels in mid-January.

Temperatures fell below freezing across Sweden on Monday, but no place was as cold as the remote settlement of Naimakka, where the mercury plummeted to its coldest level this season.

"It's continuing to creep down. At noon it was down to -42.7C," Emma Härenstam, a meteorologist at Sweden's national weather agency SMHI, told the TT news agency. Later in the afternoon temperatures fell to -43.8C in Naimakka, according to SMHI's preliminary data.

SMHI predicts that temperatures will remain low on Monday and Tuesday, followed by milder weather from Wednesday onwards, both in Naimakka and the rest of Sweden.

A heavy snowfall hit the north of Spain tonight, with more than 60 cm of snowfall in 6 hours. Cities such as Navarra, Larressа, Huesca and Aragon were hit hardest by snowfalls.

In the affected areas, almost 150 roads were covered with snow, most of which had to be closed, traffic was stopped, many drivers were trapped in a snow, and utilities were actively rescuing them, and fortunately there was no information about the victims. All the available special equipment was thrown into the fight against snow clearing, and snow plows were also transferred from other regions of the country.

Air and rail links were interrupted.

Oman's Meteorology Department released weather warnings today for continued thunderstorms and rainfall in parts of Oman, including the Hajar mountainous region. In an earlier alert, rain clouds were actively forming.

The weather warning also indicated high waves on the coast of the Arabian Sea, up to one and a half meters, and deterioration in horizontal visibility due to fog and precipitation.

It is a time of sporadic rains in some regions of Oman, including the Hajar mountainous regions, of which the famous Jebel Akhdhar ridge is a part. Precipitation is also expected in the southern region of Dhofar.
Some parts of the capital have taken on a dull look since yesterday morning due to overcast clouds. Rains and thunderstorms were reported in the inner cities of Shinas, Liwa and Izki.

Two men aged between 25 and 29 have died after being struck by lightning in Mtubatuba on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast.

Ward Councillor Lucky Mbokwana says the men were returning home from playing soccer when they were struck.

Mbokwana is appealing to people to help the two families.

"On Monday around 18h00, lightning struck two men. While they were on their way back to their homes, the lightning struck them so they passed away. So we are appealing to the residents to assist us with anything that they can assist with because those two families, Gumede, the other one is Gina, so those two families are not benefitting from anywhere."

Iceland has raised its eruption alert level for the country's most active volcano, Grímsvötn, after several recent earthquakes.

Authorities said on Monday that one of the nearby quakes was recorded at a magnitude of 3.6.

But although seismic activity had increased, officials say they have not detected any tremors that have caused a surge in underground magma.

The volcano last erupted in 2011, generating a major ash cloud that partially disrupted air traffic across Europe and cancelled 900 flights.

Comment: On the 4th December, Volcano Discovery reported on the glacial flooding at Grimsvötn:
The meltwater rate has been increasing since the last update. The IMO's hydrologists measured 1600 cubic meters per second at 10:15 and 12:20 local time today in Gígjukvísl.

The latest measurements confirm estimated forecasts and if continue to be in line with them, the glacial flood will likely reach its peak on Sunday. Based on the latest data, the maximum discharge rate is expected to be about 4000 m3/s.

The ice sheet has continued to drop and reached already about 27 m in total subsidence.

Higher-than-usual gas emissions levels have been detected at the glacier rim of the volcano.

Recent eruptions at the volcano occurred every 5-10 years and based on current measurements and observations, volcanologists agree that an impending eruption is highly expected.
The following tweets, translated by Twitter, show the flooding, deformation, and melt at Grimsvötn volcano:
'The water that was under the glacier that covers the volcano Grímsvötn , began to come out. A Jökulhlaup began to be created that rose more than 4 m, it is a matter of days before we begin to see columns of steam and ash in the main crater.'


1st Tweet: 'The last flyby of the ice cap at Vatnajökull shows that part of the ice sheet covering the volcano's craters Grímsvötn is collapsing. The volcanic danger traffic light has been raised to orange due to the recent earthquakes and collapses.'

2nd post: 'The boiler limits of Grímsvötn also show shear and collapse effects. After the water comes out, the volcanic system is losing pressure which may generate an eruption in the next few days, creating plumes of steam and ash.'

'Sharks are amassing': Tracker shows great white sharks gathering on East Coast US

A Twitter user recently raised the alarm by posting a screenshot of a tracker app showing about 100 sharks gathering in the Atlantic Ocean near the East Coast of the US.

A platform user with the handle @punished_stu tweeted early Wednesday "sharks are amassing on the east coast" with an accompanying screenshot of about 100 sharks along the US coast line. The tweet went viral, garnering more than 6,000 retweets and 53,000 likes.

"I occasionally log in to check that the nearest Great White is at least 2000 miles away," the Twitter user followed up.
