A beach-goer has lost his leg after being attacked by a shark while swimming off the coast of Brazil.

Pablo de Melo suffered horrific injuries at Piedade Beach in Recife on Sunday and needed to have one of his legs amputated as doctors battled to save his life.

The shark ripped into Pablo's arms and legs as he swam through surf - in an area known for frequent shark attacks.

It's believed the 34-year-old survived the attack because two men, who were in the water nearby, risked their own lives by bravely chasing off the beast and hauling the severely injured man out of the water.

At least 9 people have died in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, as heavy rain caused buildings to collapse and widespread flooding in the city.

The rain has been falling since Saturday 14 April. Reuters reported television footage showing residents seeking shelter on rooftops. Authorities have ordered schools to be closed for two days starting on Tuesday to assess infrastructure damage.

Dar es Salaam recorded 81.8 mm of rain from 14 to 15 April, and 99.6 mm in 24 hours the following day. Other areas of the country have also seen heavy rain over the last week, including Zanzibar and Mtwara.

Heavy snowfall buries Wisconsin farms

Lambeau Field covered in nearly two feet of snow after snow storm hits Green Bay
A literal perfect storm hit Wisconsin and Minnesota this weekend, coming at a time when some farmers were itching to get into the fields. That itch will have to be scratched at a later date, as Blizzard Evelyn dumped as much as two feet of snow throughout the upper Midwest.

The heavy snow and strong winds made roads nearly impossible to navigate. Drifting was significant as well. Normally snow drifts are relatively easy to manage, but with the wet, heavy nature of this snow made any drift dangerous if it sat on any building structure. Several dairies in Wisconsin will be repairing barn roofs as a result. Here's what we've gleaned from social media:

Records fell as an April snowstorm blanketed the Upper Midwest.

The National Weather Service says the 14.9 inches (37.8 centimeters) at Minneapolis airport from Friday through Sunday set a record for the largest April snowstorm ever there. It's also the snowiest April on record in the Twin Cities. And it's the snowiest start to a calendar year there, with 70.3 inches (178.6 centimeters) since Jan. 1.

Marine biologists have been left baffled by the appearance of large schools, comprised of up to 1,400 basking sharks, in the waters off the northeastern US.

The numbers were spotted by scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) while examining 40 years worth of aerial photographs. The study, published in the Journal of Fish Biology, found that multiple schools of basking sharks had gathered in the North Atlantic between 1980 and 2013. The groups ranged in size from 35 to 1,400.

Extreme weather hit northern parts of Algeria on April 14, 2018 bringing destructive flash floods, accumulated hail and a large tornado in Batna Province reported 3bmeteo.

Residents of Algiers were braced for flooding as more than double the rainfall the Algerian capital receives during all of April was expected to pour down last weekend. Rainfall of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) was reported across north-central Algeria through Saturday afternoon according to AccuWeather.

Unusual weather is becoming more common in Algeria. In February Ain Sefra was covered in snow for the second time this year. Following a 37-year spell of no snow which ended in December 2016, the desert town in the country's northwest, has seen snow no less than four times.
