Hailstorms cause heavy damage to fruit crops in east China

Hailstorms suddenly arrived in east China on 4 April to 5 April. Production areas in Pingdu, Laizhou, and Laiyang in Shandong suffered heavy damage.

The hailstones damaged cherry trees, pear trees, peach trees, and apple trees. The cherry and peach trees in particular are in the middle of the flowering season, while apples are ripening on the trees. Some of the flowers have already begun to open in some of the warmer production areas.

The impact of these hailstorms was disastrous for the upcoming production volume of cherries and peaches. The overall production volume will be greatly reduced and some farmers may have lost their entire harvest.

The forest near the old Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is burning, and the effects are visible from space.

The Suomi NPP satellite, a joint project of NASA and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), captured a photo Sunday (April 5) of the human-caused wildfire burning in Ukraine's Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Radiation counts near the fire have registered 2.3 microsievert per hour, a spike from the typical 0.14 μSv/h, according to Live Science.

"At this point, the fire is about 250 acres (100 hectares)," NASA officials wrote in an image description. "Actively burning fires, detected by thermal bands, are shown as red points."

A preliminary magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Saturday morning near the California-Nevada border region, northeast of Yosemite National Park, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major structural damage after the 7:36 a.m. temblor.

The quake's epicenter was located about 22 miles northwest of Benton, California, and 91 miles southeast of South Lake Tahoe, the USGS said. It was measured at a depth of six miles.

Residents throughout New Hampshire and Maine woke up on Good Friday morning to a blanket of snow far more customary for January than April. An early-spring snowstorm had painted a similar scene across much of northern New England as it lifted off into Atlantic Canada Thursday night.

The National Weather Service (NWS) recorded over a foot of snow in nearly 50 locations, almost all of which were in Maine. In New Hampshire, the areas of Pittsburg, Jefferson and Berlin all recorded over 6 inches.

After Bangor, Maine, recorded one of the least snowy stretches in its history, the storm dumped nearly 8 inches of snow on the city according to a NWS spotter at Bangor International Airport. AccuWeather Meteorologist Ryan Adamson previously noted that the city averaged less than 4 inches of snow in April most years.

The eruption was said to be the biggest since December 2018, when an explosion by the volcano triggered a 150-metre-high tsunami that killed four hundred people in Sumatra and devastated a nearby uninhabited island.

The Indonesian volcano Krakatoa, also known as Krakatau, erupted on Friday, forcing an ash cloud 14 kilometres into the air, according to Newshub.

The eruption of the famous volcano, located between the islands of Java and Sumatra in the Indonesian province of Lampung, reportedly began an 10:35 p.m. local time (3:35 PM Saturday GMT).

Sappers Field has been closed until further notice because the sinkhole that has opened up is now approximately 140-foot deep.

The popular Wooburn playing field will be closed to the public for the foreseeable future, with a 60-foot deep chasm now underneath the sinkhole.

Wooburn and Bourne End Parish Council released a statement, which reads: "Sappers Field is closed because the whole of it, not just the area around the sinkhole, is potentially unstable and very dangerous.

"The sinkhole is approximately 140 feet deep, with an underground chasm stretching 60 feet from the centre. Any part of the field could collapse in a similar way.

Rain and snow continued to fall Thursday on parts of California as a wet spring following a no-show winter pushed back against resurgent dryness that spread over three-quarters of the state this year.

Mountain peaks from the Sierra Nevada to major ranges crossing Southern California glistened with new coats of white as hillsides sported increasingly vivid shades of green fueled by precipitation that began in March after a largely withering January and February.

The latest storm entered the state from the north last weekend and slowly moved down the coast.

In its fifth day, it was still drawing bands of rain into Southern California and producing remarkable amounts of snow at higher elevations.


Comment: Two days prior to the above report 4 FEET of spring snow had already smothered Mammoth Mountain in the same state.

A spring storm featuring rain, snow, thunder, lightning and gusty winds knocked out power to more than 264,000 customers across Maine at its peak and created hazardous driving conditions that closed state government.

Central Maine Power reported around 200,000 customers without power in its service area at 9:30 a.m Friday, down from a peak of more than 204,000 earlier in the morning.

Customers in areas hardest hit by strong wind gusts and heavier-than-expected snow should expect to be without power for more than a day and restoration times may not be immediately available as crews wait for safer road conditions, a CMP spokeswoman said Friday morning.
