What was supposed to be a dusting of snow Monday morning turned into a full-blown central Iowa snowstorm.

Forecasts called for flurries and about an inch of snow in the metro, one day after the season's first measurable snowfall. Instead, an intense snow squall dropped up to nine inches in northern Polk County.

"Things just came together in the right fashion to produce the heavy snow that we're seeing across central Iowa right now," National Weather Service Meteorologist Jeff Zogg said early Monday afternoon.

155 dead, 25,000 displaced after weeks of flooding in Nigeria

The Red Cross reports that over 150 people have died and around 25,000 are displaced as a result of flooding in Nigeria that began in September.

In a report of 19 October, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said that torrential rainfall, river floods and flash floods since September have cumulatively impacted 192,594 people across 22 states in Nigeria. Furthermore, around 826 injuries and 155 fatalities have so far been recorded and 24,134 people are reported to be displaced.

A 36-year-old woman was killed after being attacked by a pack of dogs on Jagger Road in Nauvoo on Monday.

Ruthie Mae Brown of Boldo was pronounced dead at the scene at 3 p.m. by Walker County Coroner Joey Vick.

Vick said her body has been sent to forensics for an official cause of death but confirmed that there was severe trauma caused by an attack by dogs.

An elderly man tried in vain to tear their pit bull from his wife as it mauled her to death in Port Elizabeth on Monday night.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said an inquest docket has since been opened.

Belinda Jonker, 64, died on the scene.

According to Janse van Rensburg, at about 9.30pm on Monday, as Jonker and her husband were leaving their house in Summerville Street, Morningside, the family dog attacked.

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Alaska Monday local time, prompting a tsunami warning to go into effect.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred 94 kilometers southeast of Sand Point, Alaska, and was initially recorded as a magnitude 7.4 quake.


No injuries or structural damages have been reported so far.

The number of deaths caused by flooding and landslides in central Vietnam rose to 102 Monday night, with 26 still missing.

The Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control says the three provinces with the highest loss of lives are Quang Tri with 48 people, Thua Thien-Hue with 27 and Quang Nam with 11.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces had 166,780 households submerged in floodwaters, and 28,900 households with 90,900 residents had been evacuated.

Water levels were rising fast in rivers flowing through Ha Tinh. At 3 p.m., the water level had gone past the highest danger Level 3 by 0.5 m at Ngan Sau River near Chu Le Train Station. Water levels at the Ngan Pho and La rivers had reached danger Level 1.

Locals have expressed sadness after two whales washed up dead in East Lothian within just days.

As reported by Edinburgh Live, a whale tragically died after it washed up on the shore near Musselburgh on Tuesday.

Rescuers tried to save one Sowerby's beaked whale after it was washed up on the beach near the Brunstane Burn but were unsuccessful.

The whale had grazes on its underbelly, with its body set to undergo post-mortem by the National Museum of Scotland to establish why it happened.

A black bear attacked four people ranging in age from their 50s to 90s and damaged a police car Friday in central Japan before being shot to death, police and other local authorities said.

A 95-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman were seriously injured in separate attacks by the Asian black bear in Hakusan, Ishikawa Prefecture, on Friday afternoon.

Two male hunters, aged 57 and 72, sustained minor injuries after encountering the animal later, the police said.

Prior to these incidents, a police car was damaged when the bear rammed into the vehicle from behind and punctured one of the tires with its claws. The police were patrolling the area after receiving a report in the morning that the animal had been spotted at a shopping center in the city.

Experts believe cooler water temperatures are behind an increased number of unprovoked and deadly suspected great white shark attacks since January - the highest for 86 years.

Dad Andrew Sharpe became the latest fatality after the surfer was killed in an attack on Friday at Kelp Beds in Wylie Bay, near Esperance, on Western Australia's south coast.
