Ideology Vs. Realism: How Devotion to a 'System' Can Blind Us to What Actually Works

ideologies
In reality, socioeconomic ideologies like socialism, communism, capitalism, agorism, and anarchy are like tools. They are best used under specific circumstances dictated by reality, and just like tools, are best used in combination or sequence toward achieving a certain end.

Healthcare provides a perfect example of this. All can most likely agree that one shouldn't die simply because they cannot afford healthcare. The current state of healthcare - particularly in terms of infrastructure and technology - means that in order to provide healthcare to individuals who cannot afford it "socialist" style policies and charity is required. However, neither is a sustainable or final solution - merely an incremental step toward one.

Free market competition, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and the advance of medical technology makes it cheaper and more accessible for everyone, including those who cannot afford it at current costs. Incrementally, research and development will yield healthcare infrastructure and technology even the poorest can afford without government intervention or charitable organizations.

An Aeromexico passenger jet collided with a utility truck on a taxiway of Los Angeles International Airport shortly after landing on Saturday, injuring eight employees who were aboard the truck, but no one on the plane was hurt, authorities said.

The cause of the mishap, which damaged the right wing of the Boeing 737 and left the large supply truck overturned on its side, remained under investigation, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Six men and two women aboard the truck were taken to an area hospital for treatment of various unspecified injuries, none of them considered to be life-threatening, Humphreys said.

Airport officials said all eight were listed in stable condition.

'The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct': Hoax gender studies paper accepted by a peer-reviewed academic journal

transgender kids children gender identity
Note from the Skeptic editor: Every once in awhile it is necessary and desirable to expose extreme ideologies for what they are by carrying out their arguments and rhetoric to their logical and absurd conclusion, which is why we are proud to publish this expose of a hoaxed article published in a peer-reviewed article today. It's ramifications are unknown but one hopes it will help reign in extremism in this and related areas.

"The conceptual penis as a social construct" is a Sokal-style hoax on gender studies. Follow the authors @peterboghossian and @GodDoesnt.

The Hoax
The androcentric scientific and meta-scientific evidence that the penis is the male reproductive organ is considered overwhelming and largely uncontroversial.
That's how we began. We used this preposterous sentence to open a "paper" consisting of 3,000 words of utter nonsense posing as academic scholarship. Then a peer-reviewed academic journal in the social sciences accepted and published it.

The Syrian war and the Western left's misguided obsession with Empire

Western left and imperialsim

The left has always been small in the U.S., but now much of it cannot be called "left" at all. Jacobin throws its weight behind the jihadists waging holy war in Syria on behalf of US imperialism and its junior partners" - a reflection of "the infantile state of the anti-war left in the US." Imperialism has a twisted, phony left face. "Rather than defend Syria's self-determination, many in the West have bought into the imperialist narrative."

Comment: Jacobin is this website.

The Trump Administration's decision to conduct tomahawk missile strikes on a Syrian Arab Army airfield prompted activists in the US to hit the streets in protest. Protesters marched and spoke out against the airstrikes, which killed over a dozen Syrian soldiers on April 6th. The strikes come amidst intense pressure on the Trump Administration to abandon his campaign promises to ease relations with Russia and end regime change policy in the Middle East. In the days prior to the strike, Trump removed Steve Bannon as a formal leader in the National Security Council. Then, an alleged chemical weapons attack hit Idlib province, prompting President Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley to reverse their position that the future of the Syrian government rested in the hands of the Syrian people. Once again, the anti-war movement was put to the test.

Global Future report: Britain needs 200,000 migrants per year to save itself from Brexit 'catastrophe'

Britain must allow at least 200,000 migrant workers to enter the country if it wants to escape the economic "catastrophe" of Brexit, a new study reveals.

According to the Global Future report, Britain's ageing population, its low productivity and labor shortages in key areas such as the National Health Service (NHS), means the UK must maintain a net inward migration target of 200,000, broadly in line with actual levels since 2000.

The report slammed both the Conservative and Labour parties for failing to be honest with the public about the extent to which the UK needs migrant workers.

The Tories have on Thursday renewed their manifesto pledge to cut net migration to the tens of thousands, something former PM David Cameron had initially committed to back in 2015, but which the government has repeatedly failed to deliver.

However, the report warned that if the government continues to be picky over its labor resources, the country risks a decade of slow growth similar to that experienced by Japan.

DOJ engages 'Blue' alert system for threats against law enforcement

The Justice Department's national Blue alert system will alert law enforcement, the media and the public about "imminent threats." The alerts, similar to Amber alerts for missing children, can be transmitted to television and radio stations to cellphones and wireless devices. "This network provides the means of quickly identifying, pursuing and capturing violent offenders who have hurt, killed or pose an imminent danger to law enforcement," Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Friday.

The National Blue Network will also be backed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A Blue alert will be issued if an officer has been killed, seriously injured or attacked, a suspect involved has not been apprehended, and there is sufficient descriptive information of the suspect, including any vehicle and license tag information, according to the Justice Department. Under the program, a Justice Department coordinator shall work with states and local government, but the program will be limited to the geographic area most likely to lead to a suspect's capture. The program is not mandatory.

Congress passed the Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu National Blue Alert Act in 2015 to establish the nationwide system to give police an early warning of threats against police officers. It was signed into law under the Obama administration.

Comment: If the men in blue feel more secure...will that translate to a reduction in violating citizen rights and take innocent lives in their communities? Or will easing the potential threats against police actually escalate their abuse of power?

Gloria Steinem claims that women being forced to bear children is the cause of climate change

Feminist icon Gloria Steinem thinks coercing women to have children they don't want is the fundamental cause of climate change.
...

People argue that climate change and other issues are also feminist issues. What do we lose by broadening the meaning of the term?

"Are you kidding me? Listen, what causes climate deprivation is population. If we had not been systematically forcing women to have children they don't want or can't care for over the 500 years of patriarchy, we wouldn't have the climate problems that we have. That's the fundamental cause of climate change. Even if the Vatican doesn't tell us that. In addition to that, because women are the major agricultural workers in the world, and also the carriers of water and the feeders of families and so on, it's a disproportionate burden."

Climate advocates are often (though not always) population control advocates. Unborn children are an easy target for the population control freaks - they can't defend themselves.

Kim Dotcom: "I have evidence Seth Rich was WikiLeaks' source"

kim dotcom seth rich
Kim Dotcom, born Kim Schmitz, is a wanted man, by the FBI, the Justice Department, and especially Hollywood. For the last decade or so, Dotcom has spent millions fighting extradition to the United States for copyright infringement laws involving Mega Upload, the file-sharing site he founded.

Accused of creating a medium where independent users of his site could upload, share, and distribute files such as Hollywood movies, Dotcom cannot leave the country where he currently lives, New Zealand. That is, unless, he wants to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

So why would a wanted man, as larger than life as the notorious B.I.G, want to wade into the world of geopolitics? Maybe the answer can be found in the person of Seth Rich.

Rich, who was working for the Democratic National Committee (DNC), was killed assassination style, just feet from his Washington, DC home. Despite authorities calling it a robbery, none of his valuables were taken, leaving many to question whether his death, which is still unsolved, was politically motivated.

Within days of his murder, Wikileaks released a treasure trove of emails belonging to the DNC. Those emails created a firestorm of controversy for the mainstream media, the DNC, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders' supporters.

Comment: Kim tweeted the following over the past 2 days:

Information sought in case of police officer assaulting a gay man at a gas station

Officer Smith
Officer Smith
The Free Thought Project received a tip involving interaction with a Mount Joy Borough Police Officer and two men. A video was sent to us with the following title, "Mount Joy Borough, PA Police Officer Smith, Strikes and Harasses Local Latino, Gay Male."

They used to be called "Liquor Cycles" as the two-wheeled gas powered scooters were the only personal transportation option for those who'd been convicted of Driving Under The Influence (DUI). Now, with many states requiring insurance, license plates, and registration, liquor cycles are now just an economical way to get around.

But for two men, who stopped at a local gas station for slushies, the night took a turn for the worse when they ran into a police officer, who supposedly called one of them a "dick wad." That's when the video begins.

The officer, whose last name is allegedly Smith, proclaimed, "If you want to go out there and start putting out things, why don't you start trying to tell the truth for once," the officer said. "I didn't call you a dick wad, you just called me a douchebag," he proclaimed.

Women protest and launch petition over rampant sexual harassment in Parisian district

Outraged women in an eastern Parisian district have staged demonstrations and launched an online petition receiving 7,000 signatures within 24 hours - all over a "male den" in their neighborhood where women are subject to harassment and sexist remarks.

In what is described as "a few hundred square meters" in the neighborhood of Chapelle-Pajol, cafes, bars, and restaurants are effectively banned for local women, Le Parisien reports. Residents say that over the past year, the area has changed completely, with groups of men of unidentified origin, as well as street vendors, harassing local women.

Locals staged a protest on Friday to draw attention to what is going on in the area.
