Following the release of the Netflix TV series "13 reasons why" in March, the number of Google queries for suicide and related terms rocketed, new research has found. And it appears that the new findings may have stirred even more interest in the hit show.

Based on the 2007 novel "Thirteen reasons why" by Jay Asher, the series revolve around the suicide of a teenage girl, Hannah Baker. Her classmate, Clay Jensen, then discovers seven double-sided tape recordings in which Baker reveals why she decided to kill herself. The series begins with the warning that it contains footage which some may find disturbing. As the drama unfolds, the season finale bluntly depicts the girl's death, running a graphic scene for some three minutes.

After all 13 episodes were released on March 31, online searches for suicide and related terms spiked by 19 percent, says the research by San Diego State University published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Controversial experiment: Oakland now giving 'reparations' to ex-cons arrested for selling weed

cannabis plants
Oakland is beginning an experiment that can be considered both laudable and questionable. As cannabis businesses are set to spring up across the city, following California's legalization of recreational cannabis, Oakland is providing reparations to victims of the drug war.

They're not doling out money, though. They'll be doing it through the normally mundane permitting process, in accordance with ordinances passed in March.
"The ordinances require the city to give at least half of all available cannabis permits to individuals who were convicted of a marijuana-related offense in Oakland and earn an income less than 80 percent of the city average. "Equity applicants" can also qualify if they lived in an Oakland neighborhood for 10 of the last 20 years that saw a disproportionately high number of cannabis arrests."
Since permitting began in May, 72 applications have been received, and, somewhat surprisingly, almost half of them (31) are equity applicants.

Lebanon's Hezbollah fighters have recaptured the last stronghold of Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front in the country. RT's Eisa Ali was able to get inside a cave in the barren mountains, on the border with Syria, where jihadists had holed up for years.

Hezbollah is backing the Lebanese forces in the fight against the extremists. During the recent offensive against Al-Nusra Front (also known as Jabhat Fatah al-Sham), it managed to capture the cave, which served as the headquarters for the Al-Qaeda-affiliated militants.

"Inside the cave we make a shocking discovery...what appear to be prison cells," Ali says once inside. "It's unclear why exactly Al-Nusra Front needed prison cells in this isolated area, perhaps punishment, or perhaps to prevent their own fighters from fleeing in the middle of the night."

Arizona ex-Sheriff Joe Arpaio found guilty of contempt for targeting immigrants

A federal judge has found former Maricopa County, Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio guilty of criminal contempt of court, for refusing a 2011 court order to stop targeting immigrants.

Arpaio has acknowledged violating US District Judge Murray Snow's order, but maintained his disobedience was not intentional.

Snow disagreed, concluding that Arpaio knowingly continued the patrols because he believed his immigration enforcement efforts would help his 2012 campaign to get re-elected, according to AP.

Snow found Arpaio guilty of civil contempt in May 2016. The Obama administration's Department of Justice pressed criminal contempt charges against the sheriff in October that year. He lost the election to Democrat Paul Penzone shortly thereafter.

Venezuela's national electoral body announced Sunday evening that 8,089,320 people had participated in the day's National Constituent Assembly (ANC) elections.

Shortly before midnight, National Electoral Council (CNE) President Tibisay Lucena revealed that turnout in elections to choose delegates to the body tasked with rewriting Venezuela's constitution was 41.5 percent.

"The balance of the day is extremely positive, because as we always say, peace won out, and when peace wins, Venezuela wins," she declared on national television.

Comment: Not good enough for the USA, which has slapped sanctions on Maduro... and there's more to come, no doubt.

California imam calls on God to annihilate all Jews in Al-Aqsa conflict, free Jerusalem from their "filth" - UPDATE: Imam apologizes

A Californian imam called on Allah to "annihilate" Jews "down to the very last one," urging for the Al-Aqsa mosque in Temple Mount in Jerusalem to be freed from their "filth." His comments came amid violence at the holy site between Israeli police and Palestinians.

Sheikh Ammar Shahin delivered his Friday sermon at the Islamic Center of Davis, where he serves as imam, some 20km from Sacramento, the capital of California, according to a statement from the center.

In the video, the imam called on Allah to "liberate the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the filth of the Jews" and to "destroy those who closed the Al-Aqsa Mosque."

Shahin's hour-long speech in both English and Arabic was mostly dedicated to the dispute over the Jerusalem holy site. Israeli authorities earlier limited access to the compound housing the Al-Aqsa, one of Islam's holiest sites.

The move sparked protests in Jerusalem and across the West Bank which repeatedly turned violent.

Comment: The funny thing about religious fanatics is that they're all the same. All things being equal, Muslim nutjobs like this guy would get along great with the Jewish nutjob settlers in the West Bank. They're both brainwashed, irrational fanatics. But turn these crazies against each other and you have a recipe for an endless confrontation. And that suits some people just fine.

In the meantime, how about we let the adults on both sides speak for a change? We just have to find them first.

Update (July 31): Imam Ammar Shahin did the adult thing and apologized for his remarks, though after insisting his words were taken out of context (MEMRI is notorious for that). His apology was accepted by a local rabbi:
"To the Jewish community here in Davis and beyond, I say this deeply-I am deeply sorry for the pain I have caused," said Ammar Shahin.
...
Last week, Shahin gave a fiery sermon that translators say called for his higher power to annihilate Jews, and asked his congregants to take part in the slaughter.

He initially, said he was taken out of context, a point he repeated, a day later in an on camera interview with CBS13.

But that changed on Friday.

"I let my emotions get the best of me and cloud my better judgment. I said things that were hurtful to Jews. This was unacceptable," he said.

"I deeply appreciate and accept your words of apology thank you," a local Rabbi told him.

The olive branch didn't come easy. Local political and Jewish leaders joined the Council on American Islamic Relations, condemning the speech.

"Ugly words were spoken," said Yolo County Supervisor Don Sailor.

"No matter what the context was, it came out as hate speech," said CAIR Director Basim Elkarra.

Nightmare scenario: 15yo sex attack victim raped again by driver she flagged down for help - UPDATE: Rapists charged

birmingham rail station
Police have launched a double manhunt after a teenage girl was raped at a Birmingham railway station, only to be attacked a second time by a passing motorist she had flagged down for help.

The 15-year-old girl had walked with her friend to Witton railway station, near Aston Villa football ground, on Tuesday night. Police say she was approached by the first suspect, who led her away to an isolated part of the station where she was then raped.

The attack took place between 7pm on Tuesday and 2am on Wednesday.

After the first attack, the teen left the station and stopped a passing car to ask the driver for help. She was then raped again after getting into the second suspect's vehicle.

Comment: The girl was apparently 14, not 15, and two men, aged 35 and 27, have been arrested in connection with the first rape following the release of CCTV footage. Police are still looking for information on the second rape:
DCI Tony Fitzpatrick of British Transport Police said: "There have been significant developments after we released CCTV images of two men we would like to speak with. I'd like to thank the public and the media for the overwhelming support in sharing this appeal.

"Both these arrests relate to the first incident at Witton station on Tuesday evening this week. Our investigation into the second incident in the vehicle continues at a pace. The young victim was raped for a second time in a vehicle close to Witton station at approximately 2am.

"I am still looking to hear from anyone who lives locally to Witton and saw a young girl walking by herself during the early hours of Wednesday morning. If you saw any vehicle or any person acting suspiciously then please get in touch as soon as possible."
Update (July 31): The 27-year-old arrested yesterday has been charged with the first rape.
Khurram Rahi, of Rosefield Road, Smethwick, was arrested on Saturday and has been remanded in custody. He was charged at Birmingham Magistrate's Court on Monday morning.

A 34-year-old was also arrested and then released, but remains under investigation.
Still no news on the alleged second rapist.

Psychologists say more and more young people are developing an entitlement complex

young adults on phones
Research has discovered that large amounts of young people are developing an entitlement complex.

The psychological trend comes from the belief that you are superior to others and are more deserving of certain things.

This form of narcissism has some significant consequences such as disappointment and a tendency to lash out.

Pschology Today reports that some examples of entitlement range from the disregard of rules, freeloading, causing inconveniences and like to assume the role of leader when working in groups.

So called Millennials, who were born roughly between 1988 and 1994, tend to have this characteristic as a 2016 study found.

The University of Hampshire found that youngsters who were studied on issues of entitlement scored 25 percent higher than people aged 40 to 60 and 50 per cent higher than those over that age bracket.

Legalized pedophilia in the US: More than 200,000 children were married in the last 15 years

child marriage
At least 100,000 children are prostituted annually in the U.S., adding to the $9.8 billion U.S. sex trafficking industry. Children all over the country are subject to physical and sexual abuse, and most of the time it happens a lot closer to home than we would expect. Ninety percent of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator, and an astonishing 68% are abused by family members.

What's worse, some of the laws surrounding child sexual abuse and child marriage (or lack thereof) actually enable their practice. As a result, more than 200,000 children in the U.S. were married in the past 15 years alone. We often view child marriage as only being an issue in third-world countries, but in reality, it occurs right here in North America, too. Children as young as 10 have been married to far older adults, despite the legal requirement to wed being 18, or legal adulthood, nationwide.

This is because many states have "legal loopholes" that allow adults to marry children. Not all states are willing to provide statistics on this problem, and many have provided only some details rather than the full scope, so that 200,000 is likely far below the real number of American child brides and grooms.

Cambridge student activist under investigation over tweets praising violent protesters, saying that 'all whites are racist'

Dalston UK riots death Rashan Charles
© Ray Tang / Global Look PressProtesters take to the streets of Dalston burning bed mattresses and clash with police following the death of Rashan Charles whilst being arrested by police.
Cambridge student Jason Osamede Okundaye, 20, is reportedly being investigated by police over claims he tweeted that all white people are racist and praised anti-racism protesters who clashed with police on Friday.

Okundaye, who is head of the university's Black and Minority Ethnic Campaign, reportedly posted the tweets on Friday following clashes between police and protesters during a protest about the death of 20-year-old Rashan Charles in police custody in Hackney on July 22.

Although Okundaye has since made his account private, the Times reported that he made a series of angry tweets. These included a claim that "ALL white people are racist. White middle class, white working class, white men, white women, white gays, white children they can ALL geddit."

He also tweeted: "Watching these middle-class white people despair over black people protesting in their colonised Dalston is absolutely delicious."
