13 US soldiers from Fort Hood arrested in prostitution sting

fort hood
U.S. Army / Reuters
Some 13 soldiers from Fort Hood, Texas ,ranging in rank from private to major, have been arrested in a prostitution sting, officials said.

The personnel, who were all active duty, agreed to sex before they were detained. In total, 20 people were arrested in the sting, which went on for a number of weeks, KWTX reports.

The police sting used websites known for prostitution to place ads soliciting sex. In less than 20 minutes, the first contact was made, Sheriff Eddy Lange said, the Kileen Daily Herald reports. The suspects agreed to pay for sex acts largely through a series of text messages.

The agreed prices ranged from $60 to $200, depending on the sexual act and timeframe the suspects were looking for. A number of women responded to the ads, but none actually showed up, police said.

Cop suspended after shooting a man in the back while he was running away

police video footage
One man is dead following an officer-involved shooting which took place on June 8th in Philadelphia. Now the officer who killed 30-year-old David Jones as he ran away has been suspended and potentially fired following the release of a very disturbing video and a three-month long investigation. But that disciplinary action does not go far enough for critics who say Officer Ryan Pownall should be brought up on murder charges.

Pownall was transporting witnesses in a separate case when he said he approached Jones for allegedly driving his dirt bike erratically. After the officer made contact with the man riding a motorcycle, Jones produced a handgun and Pownall opened fire. After attempting to fire the first shot, the officer's gun jammed, at which time Jones had dropped the gun and was running away. Pownall fired another two shots, with one hitting Jones in the back, killing him. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross addressed reporters saying:
In both instances, Jones was running away from Pownall, with nothing (no weapon) in either hand. Officer Pownall violated departmental policy when he made the vehicle stop with witnesses in the back of the patrol car. He also failed to notify police radio of the traffic stop or call for backup. He fired two shots at Jones while he was running away and no longer posing what appeared to be a threat to himself (Pownall) or witnesses at that moment.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) chief Brock Long told a press conference Friday that Hurricane Irma is "going to devastate the United States."

Brock told reporters that power will be out for days "if not longer" in Florida. "I don't know anybody in Florida that's experienced" what is headed for Florida's way, he said.

Describing it as a "complex forecast," Brock said that "anybody from Alabama to North Carolina should be watching this storm very closely." He also warned that more than 100,000 people may need shelter.

Earlier Friday, Hurricane Irma was downgraded to a category four hurricane, but remains "extremely dangerous," according to the National Hurricane Center.

The decapitated body of a cat was found in south Chessington yesterday, September 5.

Its injuries were consistent with those inflicted by the Croydon Cat Killer, according to South Norwood Animal Rescue and Liberty (SNARL).

The 16-year-old tabby cat was discovered by a member of the public in the early afternoon, and was reported to SNARL, who attended with police.

A spokesperson for SNARL said: "I don't even have the words any more. We deal with four or five of these a week across the country. All we can do is say 'yes, this looks like the same person is involved'."

The organisation released a description of a man who could be responsible for the deaths of more than 250 cats across the country.

College rape policy a 'failed system' says Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, sparking outrage

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is vowing to replace an Obama-era rule regarding rape prosecutions on college campuses. Now, protesters and activists are calling her out before any replacement has been proposed.

DeVos gave a speech to around 100 people at George Mason University in Virginia on Thursday, in which she criticized the 2011 Title IX guidance rules implemented by President Barack Obama amid public outcry directed at college campuses for their rape and sexual assault victim protections.

The secretary plans to implement a public comment period to help formulate new federal regulations for sexual assault on campuses, according to Inside Higher Ed.

The part of the rule in question, a standard called "preponderance of the evidence," outlines steps colleges and universities are required to take when dealing with sexual assault accusations on campus. It orders the school to come up with a comprehensive and robust resolution to an accusation of sexual assault, as opposed to having a victim wait to take their case through to the courts. Under the directive, if colleges do not voluntarily implement the rule, federal funding may be withheld.

'Do they test our patience?': Afghan citizens respond to a highly offensive US 'dog' leaflet

"Highly offensive" leaflets that "mistakenly" featured a passage from the Koran superimposed onto the image of a dog and were distributed by US forces in Afghanistan might "cause a rise of hostility" against American troops and even lead to jihad against the foreigners, locals have told RT.

"Since 2001, up to 136,000 US troops have been deployed to Afghanistan, but they were not successful in achieving their goals. It is because of such negative acts. If foreign troops continue to disrespect the holy Koran and holy Islam, they will encourage Afghans to fight against them," a member of a provincial council in the Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan told RT's Ruptly video agency.

The man was referring to the latest incident involving US troops, in which they distributed a brochure showing a dog with a section of the Taliban's flag and a passage from the Koran superimposed on its side. The leaflet with the animal, which is considered unclean in Islam, was meant to urge people to report insurgents to authorities.

A senior US military commander has apologized for the leaflet, saying that its design "mistakenly contained an image highly offensive to both Muslims and the religion of Islam."

The leader of a local Sunni Muslim organization in Norway has refused to shake hands with the country's female minister of migration at the start of their TV debate.

Fahad Qureshi, founder and leader of a controversial Islam Net organization, was already in the studio of the VGTV channel, when Norway's Minister of Migration and Integration, Sylvi Listhaug, entered and shook hands with a male host first.

She then extended her hand to Qureshi, who instead of shaking it, handed her a bunch of flowers. The minister kept offering her hand, but the Muslim man instead put his own to his heart, while the woman's remained suspended in the air.

The booming Russian agriculture sector is attracting new customers, with China and Venezuela planning to increase imports of Russian wheat. The country is expecting a record grain crop this year, exceeding the numbers from 1978.

Four thousand tons of spring wheat will be delivered to China from Russia's Novosibirsk region by October 10. It's the first batch of wheat purchased by China's largest food processor COFCO.

"Together with our suppliers, we plan to discuss how to better meet the demand of Chinese mills. We want to know more about the production and the quality of Russian wheat in order to prepare for the expansion of imports," said COFCO's general manager for wheat Ma Lijun.

COFCO is among the 500 largest global companies and is ready to import up to two million tons of Russian grain, gradually increasing to five million tons.

More than 140,000 Americans sign petition against George Soros, but will it make any difference?

A petition to the White House calling for Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros to be declared a 'terrorist' has garnered more than 140,000 signatures, far exceeding the 100,000 needed to require an official response from the administration.

The petition, which also calls on the government to seize all of Soros' assets, argues the billionaire "has willfully and on an ongoing basis attempted to destabilize and otherwise commit acts of sedition" against the United States. Also that he "has developed unhealthy and undue influence over the entire Democrat Party and a large portion of the US Federal government."

Setting the stage? Cyber security researchers claim single hacker could bring down German elections with 'one click'

Computer users
© Alexey Malgavko / Sputnik
The upcoming federal elections in Germany later in September are extremely vulnerable to hacking according to multiple cyber security researchers, who claim that even with prior warning, the elections could become a "total loss."

"The number of possible attacks and the severity of the vulnerabilities exceed our worst fears,"said Linus Neumann, spokesperson for the white hat hacking group the Chaos Computer Club (CCC).

Neumann claims that a sophisticated hack is not even necessary, citing a "one-click compromise" to manipulate results.

In federal elections in Germany, votes are cast using pen and paper and are then initially counted by hand but results could be manipulated by hackers as the totals from each constituency are broadcast and tallied up at a national level, predominantly using a piece of software known as PC Wahl.
