While Governor Rick Scott said Florida's two nuclear power plants will be shutdown before Hurricane Irma hits, little has been said about over a dozen chemical plants around the state, many of which manufacture highly combustible fertilizer.

"I have been talking to Florida Power & Light, which owns these," Scott told CNN on Thursday, when asked about the power plants, "and they will both be shut down."

One of the plants, St. Lucie, is on Hutchinson Island, about 55 miles (88km) north of West Palm Beach. Its two reactors generate 2,000 megawatts of electricity, enough to power more than 1 million homes.

Turkey Point nuclear power station is located on the Biscayne Bay, about 24 miles from Miami. Its two reactors generate about 1,600 megawatts of electricity, or enough for about 900,000 homes.

Grenfell survivor tells RT about having to bid against fellow survivors for new home

A survivor of the Grenfell Tower inferno that killed at least 80 last June has spoken to RT about the injustice of having to bid against fellow survivors for somewhere to live, complaining that she's been left living in "uncertainty" by the authorities.

Kerry Ohara, who lived on the sixth floor of the 24-storey block in North Kensington, expressed her horror at having to compete against her former neighbours, and told RT: "We have to bid for our properties... I don't really understand bidding, to be honest, that was not what was supposed to happen."

Ohara is one among the hundreds of Grenfell residents who are yet to be permanently rehoused after fire ravaged the building they called home on June 14, reducing their homes to mere cinders.

Prime Minister Theresa May has promised that all residents would be rehoused within a month, but it is now almost three months since the blaze, and the majority of the 129 Grenfell households are yet to be given a temporary, much less permanent, home.

Research finds white Christians a minority in US

In news sure to strike fear into the hearts of white supremacists, less than half the population in the US are white Christians - and evangelical Protestants are on the decline. However, 69 percent of the population is Christian, and 72 percent are white.

In 1976, eight in 10 Americans were white Christians, while today 43 percent are both white and Christian.

More than 101, 000 Americans were polled by the Public Religion Research Institute, a research organization which focuses on religious tradition and values, for its 'America's Changing Religious Identity,' report.

Its findings are based on figures from its American Values Atlas survey, based on interviews with Americans across the country in 2016.

A fight over internet bandwidth ended with a young man killing his older brother in Leominster, investigators said.

Tim Record, 20, was ordered held without bail Wednesday after pleading not guilty to the murder of his 23-year-old brother Nathan Tuesday evening.

Police were called to the family's home on Lakeshore Drive for a report of a stabbing just before 7:30 p.m.

According to court documents, witnesses told police the brothers were arguing over the use of digital devices which overwhelmed their internet bandwidth and that led to a fight. They claimed Nathan punched Tim in the face and head and went to his room.

Tim Record then grabbed knives from the kitchen and stabbed Nathan in the chest, authorities said.

FEMA disaster relief fund running out of funds due to Hurricane Harvey

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is running out of money from its billion dollar relief fund contending with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey along the coast of Texas. Meanwhile, Hurricane Irma is expected to hit Florida this weekend.

Of the $1.01 billion in FEMA's disaster relief fund, only $541 million was "immediately available" for assisting those affected by Harvey, a FEMA spokeswoman told Bloomberg on condition of anonymity.

Another $472 million in the fund is being put towards preparation for Hurricane Irma, which is expected to hit Puerto Rico and Florida in the coming days, as well as the widespread wildfires currently raging in California.

The agency is expected to run out of money by Friday, and pressure is mounting on Congress to provide more funding this week. The Trump administration has asked for almost $8 billion.

Comment: When it comes to natural disasters on the scale of these two hurricanes, arriving only a few weeks apart, it would be impossible to conceive the amount of damage or funds required by those in the path of the furies. Climatic changes are afoot and these two examples are but harbingers of things to come. Funding? There will never be enough as long as the US spends its money on war and manmade destruction. And FEMA...defies the terms 'preparedness' and 'organization.'

Man who claimed to have been raped by "VIP pedophile ring" in UK facing prosecution as inquiry into claims goes nowhere

An alleged fantasist known only as 'Nick', who claimed he had been raped and abused by a VIP pedophile ring made up of Tory MPs and powerful politicians, could be prosecuted for attempting to pervert the course of justice and fraud.

The only accuser's claims led to a huge Scotland Yard investigation known as Operation Midland.

When Nick's allegations amounted to nothing, detectives from Northumbria Police launched a 10-month investigation and have now submitted an evidence file to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which will decide whether he should stand trial.

The operation, which cost £2.5 million (US$3.27 million), saw politicians and high-profile figures falsely accused of appalling child abuse, and even murder.

NFL player Michael Bennett has alleged Las Vegas police officers threatened to "blow his f***ing head off" after the Floyd Mayweather Jr versus Conor McGregor fight, in a racially-motivated case of police brutality.

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Bennett posted on social media on Wednesday claiming he was arrested and had a gun held to his head by officers who singled him out for "being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time" as they were investigating reports of a shooter in a Las Vegas nightclub after the fight.

Bennett was in Vegas on the weekend of August 26 to attend the bout at the T-Mobile Arena - which Mayweather won by 10th-round TKO - during a day off from training. After the fight, Bennett was making his way back to his hotel when he heard "what sounded like gunshots," prompting him to flee.

Woman arrested for shoplifting caught on video slipping out of handcuffs, stealing police car and leading cops on high-speed chase

Toscha Sponsler

Video released by police shows how a woman cuffed and stuffed in the back of a police car was able to slip out of her restraints, crawl into the front seat and lead law enforcement officers on a 100mph chase for more than 20 minutes.

The Lufkin Police Department in Texas released footage Tuesday that shows officers restraining Toscha Sponsler, 33, after receiving a call of a possible shoplifter at an Ulta Beauty Salon.

While police searched her bag, Sponsler, who was restrained in the back of a patrol car, kept an eye out for the officers. When no one was looking, she wriggled out of her seat belt, slipped out of her cuffs and climbed through a 12-inch window partition to the driver's seat.

In a Facebook post, the police said that the partition was left open in order to allow Sponsler to "receive more air conditioning in the back seat and also speak with her through the course of the investigation." They added that the partition is never left open while transporting suspects.
