Economist warns new tech could make wide range of high-skilled jobs 'obsolete'

Kara Frederick, tech director at the Heritage Foundation, discusses the need for regulations on artificial intelligence as lawmakers and tech titans discuss the potential risks.

A Nobel Prize-winning economist is sounding the alarm about the future of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence, arguing that many of the currently in-demand jobs could soon be obsolete.

"The skills that are needed now — to collect the data, collate it, develop it and use it to develop the next phase of AI, or more to the point, make AI more applicable for jobs — will make the skills that are needed now obsolete because it will be doing the job," said Christopher Pissarides, a professor of economics at the London School of Economics, in a recent interview, according to a report from Time. "Despite the fact that you see growth, they're still not as numerous as might be required to have jobs for all those graduates coming out with STEM because that's what they want to do."

The comments come as 2023 became a breakthrough year for AI technology, which has rapidly developed and gained increased mainstream applications. But some have feared that such technology will make many current jobs obsolete, causing a major disruption to the world's labor markets.

Not a winning strategy: 2015 comments from feminist director of upcoming Star Wars installment says her goal 'is to make men uncomfortable'

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
Two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has declared 'it's about time' a woman shaped a Star Wars film as she is set to become the first woman and the first person of color to direct a feature film for the franchise.
Star Wars fans and conservatives have jumped on comments by the director of a new female-led film in the franchise, leading them to believe it will be another 'woke' flop from Disney.

Two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has declared 'it's about time' a woman shaped a Star Wars film as she is set to become the first woman and the first person of color to direct a feature film for the franchise.

The film Star Wars: New Jedi Order is set after the most recent Star Wars sequel, 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, and will be centered on Daisy Ridley's character Rey.

Comment: Examining the strategy here leaves one absolutely flabbergasted at how impossibly stupid Disney could be. How can they push forward with the same woke garbage after being rocked by failure after failure? But it could be a strategy those in-the-know have termed 'fan-baiting' - deliberately making changes like race or gender-swapping beloved characters, feminist reboots or the like, with the intention of enraging fans of the original material, then collecting all the 'toxic' responses to platform against. 'Look at all these toxic fans. You don't want to be like them. You should see our movie to prove you aren't toxic like they are.' It's probably worked in the past, but how long before people get wise to it? The best response to media trying to push its ideological nonsense on you is to ignore it.

McDonald's CEO admits Gaza boycott is having 'meaningful impact on business'

Some Western brands in countries where pro-Palestinian sentiment has been traditionally strong have been battered with boycotts as consumers turn to local alternatives following Israel's large-scale invasion of the Gaza Strip in late October.

McDonald's locations across the Middle East have been hit the hardest with boycotts since McDonald's Israel on X said it would give out 100,000 free meals.

That's the moment when boycotts hit McDonald's operators across the Middle East.

Bloomberg data in late October into early November shows the number of news headlines featuring "Boycott McDonald's" surged after the McDonald's Israel's X post and the IDF's subsequent invasion of Gaza on Oct. 27.

Comment: One can only hope that, where people are able to, these acts of resistance against those who perpetrate and facilitate genocide will increase.

Pushback to tyranny & control increases in 2024 - Catherine Austin Fitts

fight the deep state
Catherine Austin Fitts (CAF), Publisher of The Solari Report, financial expert and former Assistant Secretary of Housing (Bush 41 Admin.), says the top story (out of 20 top stories) of 2023 was massive, documented pushback to tyranny and control by the evil Deep State globalists. CAF explains, "Our top story of 2023 is 'The Year of Pushback.' It was so long, and it was so big, we had to make a special page and move the other 19 top stories to a whole different section on another page."

Vaccines begin flowing into Gaza amidst soaring childhood disease infection rates

© AFPInoculations against rubella, polio, measles and mumps trucked in via Rafah amid concerns of health emergency within beleaguered enclave and worries outbreaks could reach Israel. An elderly woman looks on as she sits with children at a makeshift camp in an area of the European Hospital in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on December 31, 2023.
Thousands of doses of vaccines against childhood diseases including polio and measles have begun entering the Gaza Strip to help deal with a growing health emergency in the besieged enclave, the Palestinian Authority health ministry said Monday.

Israel's ground offensive has effectively stopped normal health services in Gaza, including vaccinations against highly contagious childhood diseases that had been brought under control by mass immunization programs.

The Ramallah-based ministry, which is separate from Hamas-controlled health authorities in Gaza, said supplies were estimated to be sufficient to cover vaccinations for between 8 and 14 months.

Comment: Whilst it does appear that some vaccines can be helpful, there's also substantial evidence showing that some of them can actually be the cause of outbreaks, and can worsen them, in addition to them having a multitude of harmful side effects. And, since the US, UK, and Israel have created conditions in Gaza that are unfathomably dire, it's possible that this influx of vaccines could do much more harm than good:

Letter to attorney general and state prosecutor demands action to stop 'explicit calls to commit atrocious crimes'...

A group of prominent Israelis has accused the country's judicial authorities of ignoring "extensive and blatant" incitement to genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza by influential public figures. In a letter to the attorney general and state prosecutors, they demand action to stop the normalisation of language that breaks both Israeli and international law.

They write:
"For the first time that we can remember, the explicit calls to commit atrocious crimes, as stated, against millions of civilians have turned into a legitimate and regular part of Israeli discourse. Today, calls of these types are an everyday matter in Israel."
Signatories include one of Israel's top scientists, the Royal Society member Prof David Harel, alongside other academics, former diplomats, former members of the Knesset, journalists and activists.

Represented by the human rights lawyer Michael Sfard, their 11-page letter contains multiple examples of "the discourse of annihilation, expulsion and revenge". The list of elite Israelis who have incited war crimes includes cabinet ministers and Knesset members, former top military officials, academics, media figures, social media influencers and celebrities, the letter says.

Comment: Horrors beyond imagination will haunt this land and people forever.

Mob of over 100 looters smashes car through California bakery, trashes store after street takeover

A mob of over 100 looters purposefully crashed a Kia into a small bakery in Compton, Calif., before they flooded in and ransacked the store during a night of rampage on the streets earlier this week.

The thieves had gathered in the area for an illegal street takeover around 3 a.m. Tuesday before making the mile-long trek to Ruben's Bakery & Mexican Food.

When they got to the locked store, a white Kia backed into the front doors, clearing an entryway for the crowd of pillagers to get to their loot.

Security footage captured the chaotic scene in the store as the mob filled their arms and pockets with as much as they could before the store was set to open in three hours.

A majority of the looters attempted to conceal their identities by either wearing masks or holding their hoods over their faces with their hands.

Meat scales, meat, groceries and lotto tickets were among the goods stolen in Tuesday morning's brazen robbery, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Capt. Melissa Ramirez.

Best of the Web: As the fighting in Gaza continues, civilians are starting to lose hope: 'Israel is killing us without mercy'

Amid a humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Palestine that no international organization can cope with, locals tell their stories of survival

Since October 7, 2023, an estimated 22,000 Palestinians have lost their lives amid Israel's shelling of Gaza. Most were civilians. As the conflict nears the end of its third month, the humanitarian situation in the enclave is deteriorating. The vast majority of residents lack food, water and basic medications.

Last October 7, mobs of Palestinian militants stormed Israel's southern communities, massacring an estimated 1,200 and leaving over 5,000 wounded. In response, Israel opened a war on Gaza aimed at crushing Hamas, the Islamic group responsible for the deadly attack. But in the process of doing so, more than 21,000 lives have been taken. According to estimates, only 8,000 of these were militants.

Comment: The psychopaths in the Israeli government are hoping to create such a humanitarian disaster, that the world will capitulate to their demands and set up camps in the Sinai for the refugees, so the Palestinians can be pushed out of Gaza once and for all.

Homeless population surges in rural England - study

The number of homeless in rural England has surged by 40% in five years amid rising property prices and the cost-of-living crisis, according to a recent report by British countryside charity Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

The number of people sleeping rough - meaning those living in the open air, in tents, makeshift shelters or buildings not meant for human habitation - has increased in the UK from 17,212 counted in 2018 to 24,143 in 2023, according to the study.

It's estimated that every 15 people per 100,000 are homeless across England, the researchers said. CPRE found that the problem is more severe in rural areas than in many of England's towns and cities, including London, Leeds or Norwich.

According to the charity, the crisis stems from the economic downturn that started in 2022, when inflation in the UK hit a multi-decade high of 11.1% due to soaring costs of energy and food. The crunch eventually resulted in record-high house prices, stagnating wages, huge waiting lists for public housing and price rises for second homes and short-term lets, including Airbnb. A lack of affordable housing that it describes as "severe" has exacerbated the country's cost-of-living crisis, CPRE said. The report adds that 300,000 people are waiting for social housing in rural England, where the average house price stands at around £420,000 ($535,000).

EU justifies Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilians

Kiev has the right to defend itself against Moscow, EU spokesman on foreign affairs Peter Stano has told TASS. The Russian news agency contacted Stano for a comment on recent attacks on the Russian city of Belgorod which resulted in over two dozen civilian casualties.

The official largely evaded the agency's question about the bloc's stance on the Belgorod attacks; Kiev reportedly used weaponry supplied and paid for under the so-called European Peace Facility, a war chest fund used almost exclusively to bankroll the Ukrainian conflict.

"In general, Ukraine has the legal right to defend itself from... aggression," Stano told TASS on Wednesday.

"Regarding the specific incident in Belgorod, no information that comes from Russia can be considered trustworthy," the spokesman added, accusing Moscow of "constant lies, manipulation and propaganda."

The remarks provoked a sarcastic reaction from Stano's Russian counterpart, Maria Zakharova, who suggested that the official's take on the Belgorod attacks was actually a perfect illustration of the so-called "rules-based world order" propagated by the West.

"Western countries have legalized lawlessness and come up with a name for it - the 'rules-based world order,'" the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman told TASS when reached for comment about Stano's take on Belgorod.

Comment: No surprise that the spokesman slithered away from commenting on a shameful and unconscionable act.
