EU imports of Russian LNG up 40% compared to pre-proxy war levels, new study finds

The European Union vowed to drastically cut imports of gas from Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine but data shows the bloc's purchases of Russian-made liquefied natural gas (LNG) have soared.

According to new findings released by Global Witness, an environmental watchdog organisation, the European Union bought 21.6 million cubic metres (mcm) of Russian LNG between January and July of this year, a small increase compared to the same period in 2022, when imports totalled 21.3 mcm.

But when the 2023 figure is measured against the same period in 2021, prior to the Kremlin's decision to wage war on Ukraine, it results in a 39.5% surge, an embarrassing percentage for a bloc that has forcefully condemned the invasion as an illegal, brutal and ruthless attempt to subjugate Ukraine's independence.

'Situation' in Gabon, West Africa is a big issue for Europe - EU's Borrell

Josep Borrell

European Union defence ministers are to discuss the situation in Gabon, foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Wednesday, adding that a coup, if confirmed, would heap more instability on the region.

A group of senior Gabonese military officers appeared on national television in the early hours of Wednesday and said they had taken power, after the state election body announced President Ali Bongo had won a third term.

"If this is confirmed, it is another military coup which increases instability in the whole region," said Borrell, speaking at a meeting of EU defence ministers in Toledo.

Comment: Indeed it might increase instability for the people of Gabon, a bit, but he's probably referring to their the stability of their control in the region.

Comment: This is the same Borrell who, less than a year ago, said that Europe was a garden and the rest of the (developing) world was a 'jungle'.

Since then, the number of African nations that are throwing off the death grip of the West is increasing apace. This is occurring alongside the West's failing proxy war in Ukraine - which demonstrates its increasing weakness on the world stage - and the multipolar world approaching the developing world with offers of mutually-beneficial deals; which not only accelerates the pivot away from the West, but also serves to block any attempts at re-conquest. Furthermore, the West is now being forced to admit that a significant portion of its comfort and wealth has been reliant on the 'jungle':

NATO's 'proxy war' blues: How the US-led campaign to use Ukraine to 'cripple' Russia has failed

The US-led drive to isolate Russia and the attempt to debilitate its economy and military using Ukraine - acknowledged as a "proxy war" even by some Western leaders - appears to be having the opposite effect by various measures.

Washington and other NATO members have repeatedly proclaimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has already suffered a strategic defeat in Ukraine and has "no possibility" of winning the conflict. "Putin's already lost the war," US President Joe Biden claimed last month after attending a NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Pentagon officials, who have openly admitted that their goal is to weaken Russia's military, have spoken in recent weeks of heavy losses for Moscow's forces and "steady progress" in Ukraine's long-touted counteroffensive. America's top-ranking general, US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, went so far earlier this year as to say, "Russia has lost. They've lost strategically, operationally and tactically."

Russian leaders are seeing a far different picture on the ground. For instance, Putin has claimed that Russian forces achieved a ten-to-one kill ratio in a key battle last month. Ukraine has lost 43,000 troops, as well as dozens of Western-supplied tanks, infantry vehicles and artillery pieces since Kiev's counteroffensive began in early June, according to an August 4 estimate by the Russian Defense Ministry. "It is obvious that the Western-supplied weapons are failing to bring success on the battlefield and only prolong the military conflict," Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has said.

Intelligence unit of country's defense ministry says Islamic Republic thwarted 'one of the largest sabotage plots targeting Iran's missile, aviation and airspace military industry'...

Iran claimed Thursday that it had foiled a major plan by Israel's Mossad spy agency to sabotage its missile production and its defense industry as a whole.

According to Reuters, state TV said:
"The intelligence unit of the defense ministry thwarted one of the largest sabotage plots targeting Iran's missile, aviation and airspace military industry. This sabotage was carried out under the guidance of the Zionist intelligence services and their agents."
The semi-official Mehr news agency said the intelligence department of the country's defense ministry and the logistics branch of the armed forces had issued a statement on the matter:
"Over the past months, a completely professional network that had plotted to bring faulty and equipped pieces into the production cycle and supply chain for use in the production of advanced missiles in the missile industries of the defense ministry through the cooperation of some infiltrating elements fell in a trap spread by the intelligence forces at the defense ministry and it was dismantled.

"The cell had sought to sell the equipped parts to turn the produced rockets into an explosive tool to hit industrial lines and employees working in that field. Despite the very complicated plot designed by the Zionist enemy, this action of the enemy was under intelligence and operational monitoring from the very beginning and was completely neutralized after detaining its agents."
Tehran frequently claims to foil Mossad operations in the country, but the veracity of such claims is unclear.

"He looks like a thug"

RINO warmonger John Bolton ran to CNN to whine about how Trump is using his iconic mugshot to boost his popularity.

Trump turned himself in at the Fulton County jail on Thursday where he was processed and booked. Fulton County officials later Thursday night released Trump's mugshot.

President Trump immediately began fundraising off of his mugshot. His poll numbers are skyrocketing.

Comment: Indeed, the black community has embraced Trump as he has had an experience that mirrors their own.

The leader of the German state of Saxony has argued that the Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipeline linking to Russia, which was ruptured in an underwater explosion last September, should be repaired. Minister-President Michael Kretschmer warned that unless action is taken soon, sea water will damage the conduit beyond repair.

In an interview with Germany's WirtschaftsWoche magazine published on Monday, Kretschmer said: "It is important because this infrastructure can secure our energy supply in five or ten years."

He insisted that it is the "most normal [thing] in the world that the pipeline is repaired, that is, the water is removed and it is sealed and thereby secured for starters."

The Saxony leader stressed that no one knows what the situation will look like in a decade from now, and that "keeping as many options open for yourself as possible would be a sign of a smart politician."

'US in conflict with itself' - Medvedev

trump protestors
The confrontation between Democrats and Republicans in the US could spiral into a full-blown civil war, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said.

Speaking to RT and TASS news agency on Saturday, Medvedev said there is "a colossal rift between the elites" in the US. "It's a clash between the conservative Republican establishment and the liberal segment, represented by the Democratic Party, which has actually torn America apart."

"America is currently in a state of internal strife. America is conflicting with itself," Medvedev, who is currently the deputy chair of Russia's Security Council, argued. "Moreover, in my view, this strife is irreconcilable in some aspects. Such domestic conflicts often end with a civil war."

"I don't know what will happen in the US, but the level of conflict right now is [high]," he said.

Donald Trump defiantly declares "we will not comply" in response to efforts to reinstate COVID lockdowns and mask and vaccine mandates

Trump
Former President Donald Trump released a fiery video statement, vehemently opposing attempts to reinstate COVID-19 restrictions, including lockdowns and mask and vaccine mandates.

Trump's comments come amidst increased concerns over new variants of COVID-19 in an attempt to manipulate the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

In the video posted on Truth Social, Trump argued that the "left-wing lunatics" are employing scare tactics again about new COVID-19 variants to set the stage for renewed restrictions. He said that the real motive behind this is to influence the upcoming 2024 election through what he describes as an attempt to "restart the COVID hysteria."

West trying to scupper BRICS - Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin
© Sputnik / Mikhail KlimentyevRussian President Vladimir Putin takes part in a news conference during the 15th BRICS Summit via videoconference in Moscow, Russia.
Countries of the "golden billion" are willing to do anything to preserve a unipolar world order, the Russian president has said

The BRICS group is not trying to compete with or oppose any other nation or group, but nevertheless faces resistance from countries of the so-called "golden billion" that wish to preserve their global dominance, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the BRICS summit in South Africa via video link on Thursday, the Russian leader pointed out that the group's efforts to create a new world order based on multipolarity has "irreconcilable opponents" who wish to slow down the process and restrain the formation of new and independent centers of development and influence in the world.
