Activist who filmed Israeli soldier shooting Palestinian receives death threats, lives in fear

A human rights activist who filmed the moment an IDF soldier shot a disarmed and injured Palestinian has told RT he and his family have faced a constant stream of death threats from Israeli nationalists since he made the video public.

"When I heard the last gunshot, which, as it turned out, hit Abdel Fattah Al-Sharif in the head - I got scared. But I thought it was very important to spread this video in the media. I handed it over to rights groups, including the B'Tselem organization," Imad Abushamsiya told RT. "But from that day on now my family and I are living in constant fear - we have received numerous threats from Israeli nationalists," he added, stating that through social media he now constantly receives pictures with phrases like "I will kill you whatever it takes. I have received calls on my mobile and messages on Facebook, in which I was threatened and told to leave the district," Imad, who lives with his family in the West Bank city of Hebron, said.

The activist filmed the gruesome video of the fatal incident, which took place outside his home in Hebron on March 24, 2016. Imad heard gunshots and went outside to witness the aftermath of what appeared to be a stabbing attack on an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier.

In the video the alleged attacker, Palestinian Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, who had already been incapacitated, lies wounded on the road while an injured soldier is taken away by ambulance. The footage shows al-Sharif moving his head from side to side as soldiers, medics and settlers crowd around, making no attempt to help. Then a soldier, later identified as 19-year-old Elor Azaria, approaches al-Sharif, shouts "Stand back!" and shoots the teenager in the head at close range.

Comment: Imad Abushamsiya is being persecuted in order to send a message to the public. Ignore what you see, forget what transpires, and never, ever report it to the media. If you do, there will be hell to pay or worse. This incident and the subsequent video helped solidify a segment of Israelis into demonizing, threatening vigilantes.

Netanyahu wants Azaria pardoned for at least two reasons: 1) Winning public points by protecting his own, and 2) By letting Azaria off the hook, it will enrage more Palestinians to act out and therefore justify more eliminations. In addition, Israel wants complete immunity for IDF soldiers, no matter what they do, no matter who they kill, no matter the circumstances. See below:

An entity claiming to be the mysterious hacker or hackers Guccifer 2.0 says a "vulnerability" in the Democratic Party's computer software and not Russian state actors allowed them to gain access to private campaign information.

Guccifer 2.0, who took credit for the hack on the Democratic National Committee, appears to have posted online for the first time since November.

Guccifer 2.0 has been linked to the Russian government by the US Intelligence Community over allegations of election interference.

The short article "written by Guccifer 2" on a Wordpress blog site refutes suggestions of Russian involvement.

The world's largest exporter, China, faces more challenges and uncertainties this year due to persistently weak global demand and rising concerns of a possible trade war with the United States.

The country posted gloomy trade data on Friday with the biggest drop in exports in eight years.

Chinese exports for 2016 fell 7.7 percent year-on-year which was the second annual decline in a row. Imports fell 5.5 percent. The country had a trade surplus of $509.96 billion. In yuan terms, 2016 exports dropped 2 percent, while imports picked up 0.6 percent.

December exports fell by a more-than-expected 6.1 percent year-on-year while imports were slightly above forecasts, growing 3.1 percent on high demand for commodities.

China reported a trade surplus of $40.82 billion for December, down from the previous month's $44.61 billion.

China is accustomed to the implicit 'gentlemen's agreement' that has been in play ever since the end of the Cold War, whereby the US and China occasionally criticize the trading ties between their two countries but generally refrain from taking any dramatically substantial steps to decouple their economies. Trump wants to change that.

Britain gave military ally Bahrain £2.1M 'stability' funding in 2016, despite its continuing human rights abuses

Bahrain's record on human rights must affect the annual £2 million of UK funding given to the Gulf kingdom, say campaigners.

Information released under Freedom of Information shows that the UK gave its close military ally and arms customer Bahrain £2.1 million from its Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF) in 2016.

The CSSF is currently the focal point of an inquiry by MPs into how and where UK overseas aid is allocated.

The revelation comes at a time when Bahrain, which is receiving the funding to reform its much-maligned justice and security apparatus, is, in fact, reversing reforms to an internal intelligence agency accused of torture.

A £500,000 tranche of funding was also given to "public order," raising concerns the UK could be complicit in human rights abuses, given the reputation of Bahrain's riot police.

After a session of the Joint Committee on the National Security, MPs lamented that national security adviser Mark Lyall Grant had provided "a high degree of ambiguity.

An Israeli embassy official in London who was caught on camera by Al Jazeera talking about "taking down" British government ministers has been fired from his post by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Al Jazeera confirmed today.

Comment: Israeli embassy official behind 'take down' plot resigns
A disgraced Israeli embassy official who was caught on camera talking about "taking down" a British minister has resigned from government service.

Shai Masot, a senior political officer in London, stood down several days ago when he was sent back to Israel, according to the Guardian.

A spokesperson for Israel's foreign ministry told Middle East Eye that Masot would have no further contact with the ministry. "We consider that this scandal is now done and behind us," the spokesperson said.

Shai Masot, a senior political officer in London, stood down several days ago when he was sent back to Israel, according to the Guardian.

Shai Masot, who worked at Israel's embassy in London as a "senior political officer", also boasted of setting up political youth organisations in the UK to promote Israeli interests and talked about a "hit list" of MPs, also featuring Conservative Crispin Blunt, the chair of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee.

The embassy has sought to distance itself from Masot's activities, with Ambassador Mark Regev describing him as a junior member of staff whose comments were unacceptable.

However, the Al Jazeera investigative report that blew the story wide open, called The Lobby, showed Masot's business card which described him as a "senior political officer".

Masot was also caught talking about British officials using highly undiplomatic language, including calling the British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson an "idiot".

Israel's attack on Syria is an attack on Donald Trump's Middle East policies

Israel has been attacking Syria on and off for years. The timing of this current attack is designed to derail Trump's policy to abandon America's 'Assad must go' rhetoric. Trump must not take the bait.

Israel has had a cold war with Syria, which occasionally becomes hot, almost since the inception of Syria as an independent state. More than any other country which participated in the Arab-Israeli wars of 1967 and 1973, Syria has been the most consistent in supporting justice for Palestine and therefore incurs a special piece of Tel Aviv's wrath.

Going away gift: Obama just expanded surveillance powers for Donald Trump

Obama signing Surveillance Power EO
The Obama administration just handed even more power to the incoming Trump administration to invade the privacy of American citizens. The recent approval of new procedures for an existing executive order will allow the NSA to share the private data it collects with all 16 agencies of the United States intelligence community. The 23-page outline of the new procedures lifts previous limits placed on the way information was filtered before being disseminated to individual agencies.

"As he hands the White House to Trump, Obama just unchained NSA from basic limits on passing raw intercepts to others," NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden tweeted Thursday.

Russia and China will be taking further "unspecified" countermeasures to the US plan to deploy an anti-missile system in South Korea, according to Chinese news agency, Xinhua.

According to the statement, Moscow and Beijing urge all those involved in the system's deployment to consider the escalation in tensions it would lead to, and to exercise restraint. But the two also reaffirm their commitment to a nuclear-free North Korea, and believe diplomacy should be the way forward.

The statement comes shortly after a Thursday meeting co-chaired by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov and Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou.

A new battery of S-400 long-range surface-to-air missiles has been fully deployed in Russia's Crimea after five months of training, the Russian military announced on Friday.

In August of last year, the cutting-edge systems were delivered to the 18th Guard Anti-Aircraft Rocket Sevastopol-Feodosia Regiment stationed near the city of Feodosia in the eastern part of the peninsula. Since then, the troops have been training to use the S-400 systems and demonstrated their new skills during the Kavkaz 2016 exercise.

The regiment is now fully operational and capable of deploying the long-range missile systems, the command of the Russian Southern military district reported on Friday.

"This truly large-scale system is going on combat duty and overlaps with the existent anti-aircraft defense system of our nation in a radius of hundreds of kilometers," said Lieutenant General Viktor Sevastyanov, commander of the fourth army of Air Forces and Air Defense.

Russia will be able to maintain its Reserve Fund with oil at $50

Current oil prices may help Russia avoid running out of reserves this year, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov told reporters on the sidelines of the Gaidar international economic forum on Friday.

"Will we be able to maintain the Reserve Fund if oil prices stay at $50 per barrel," he said, adding that will bring in around 1 trillion rubles ($16.8 billion) in extra revenue.

The oil price at $50 or above will also allow replenishing of the National Welfare Fund in 2017, he added.

Siluanov insists that revenue from the non-oil sector should be used to support economic and social development.

According to the minister, this year the country's budget provides for the use of around 1.8 trillion rubles ($30.3 billion) from the Reserve Fund and the Welfare Fund.

Siluanov was echoed by Russian Minister of Economic Development Maxim Oreshkin who said the recovery of oil prices would reduce spending from the Reserve Fund.

"Considering the oil price growth early this year, we have an excellent opportunity to cut spending from the Reserve Fund and preserve it," said Oreshkin.

Russia drew up its 2017 budget using an assumed average crude oil price of $40 per barrel. Brent crude futures were trading at $55.70 as of 14:10 GMT on Friday.
