When it comes to strategic deterrence, Russia might replace its nuclear weapons with precision bombs, in order to help reduce international tensions and strengthen world peace, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in a public lecture on Thursday, the news agency RIA Novosti reported.

According to Shoigu, Moscow plans to rely on warships and submarines armed with cruise missiles to carry the bulk of its precision-guided weapons.

"By 2021, we plan to more than quadruple the combat capabilities of our strategic conventional forces, which will fully meet the demands of [Russia's] conventional deterrence," Shoigu said.

The Russian lower house has given the first nod to a bill that limits foreign stakes in online video services to 20 percent and bans them from running political ads. The bill, however, only applies to video-on-demand sites and not to sharing services such as YouTube.

The proposed legislation was prepared and drafted jointly by the conservative parliamentary majority party United Russia and populist nationalists LDPR. Its sponsors propose that the new rules for online video-on-demand sites come into force starting March 1 this year.

The current draft sets the maximum limit for stakes of foreign citizens and companies in Russian companies providing video-on-demand services at 20 percent. It also reads that Russian authorities can shut down any other management scheme if it allows for direct or indirect control of the services from abroad. The bill further forbids video-on-demand websites from showing advertising ordered by political parties or any other election campaign material.

The draft concerns services that run only "professionally made content," meaning websites like YouTube that host primarily user-generated content are not required to follow its regulations.

The US president-elect has accused unnamed 'sleazebag political operatives' in both parties for publishing a dubious dossier alleging that he has ties to Russia, while pledging a full report on the alleged 'Russian hacking' of the US election in 90 days.

In a series of tweets, Donald Trump reiterated his denial of the uncorroborated allegations published by Buzzfeed that claimed he had ties with the Russian government and was the target of potential Kremlin blackmail.

"Totally made up facts by sleazebag political operatives, both Democrats and Republicans - FAKE NEWS! Russia says nothing exists. Probably released by 'Intelligence' even knowing there is no proof, and never will be. My people will have a full report on hacking within 90 days!" Trump said.

Earlier, during a press conference, Trump called Buzzfeed a "failing pile of garbage" for publishing the document, which had sparked uproar online and in the media because of the salacious details it contained describing what it claimed were Trump's adventures in Russia.

Turkish FM says feasible roadmap agreed at Cyprus reunification talks

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres (C) speaks next to Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades (R) and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci

The deal aimed to end the lingering dispute between Greek and Turkish Cypriots has now become feasible with a roadmap being drawn up and a possibility of another meeting outlined at a security conference on Thursday, as the UN hopes for a "last effort."

While no major breakthrough has been announced at the five-party conference in Geneva, attended by Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci along with foreign ministers of three guarantor states, Turkey, Greece and the UK, the newly-appointed UN chief Antonio Guterres appeared to be quite optimistic about the progress reached at the talks.

Guterres told Reuters he expects the parties to make a "last effort" at the next meeting, yet to be scheduled after the technical details are thrashed out on January 18. Earlier, Guterres said that there cannot be a "quick fix" to the Cyprus issue, stressing that the sides are "looking for a solid and sustainable solution," not "miracles."

Prof. Steven Cohen rips Buzzfeed/CNN smear report aimed at Trump

In an interview with FOX's Tucker Carlson, Prof. Stephen Cohen, a renowned expert on Russia and advocate of detente, blasted reports by Buzzfeed and CNN of a so-called intel report filled with scurrilous accusations against US President-elect Donald Trump and Russia.

The scandalous and totally unverified report, which contained among other things, claims about Trump's sexual activities in Moscow, was provided to the FBI by Sen. John McCain. Cohen told Carlson that this is the latest move in an effort to ruin Trump's national security credentials before he is even sworn in as president.

One democratic state in Palestine and Israel is the only practical solution

Israeli Checkpoints
© In These TimesRaheli Bar-Or of Machsom Watch keeps an eye on an Israeli solider as Palestinians pass through the army's Jubara checkpoint near the West Bank town of Tulkarem.
Long before December 28, when Secretary of State, John Kerry took the podium at the Dean Acheson Auditorium in Washington DC to pontificate on the uncertain future of the two-state solution and the need to save Israel from itself, the subject of a Palestinian state has been paramount.

In fact, unlike common belief, the push to establish a Palestinian and a Jewish state side-by-side goes back years before the passing of United Nations Resolution 181 in November 1947. That infamous resolution had called for the partitioning of Palestine into three entities: a Jewish state, a Palestinian state and an international regime to govern Jerusalem.

A more thorough reading of history can pinpoint multiple references to the Palestinian (or Arab state) between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

The idea of two states is western par excellence. No Palestinian party or leader had ever thought that partitioning the holy land was ever an option. Then, such an idea seemed preposterous, partly because, as Ilan Pappe's Ethnic Cleaning of Palestine shows, "almost all of the cultivated land in Palestine was held by the indigenous population (while) only 5.8% percent was in Jewish ownership in 1947."

An earlier, but equally important reference to a Palestinian state was made in the Peel Commission, a British commission of inquiry, led by Lord Peel that was sent to Palestine to investigate the reasons behind the popular strike, uprising and later armed rebellion that began in 1936 and lasted for nearly three years.

Comment: Until Israelis gives up the idea that they are "God's chosen people", who did a real estate deal with the completely mythical Abraham for Palestine, any resolution will be impossible. Don't hold your breath.

VA whistleblower exposes scandal, receives death threats, supported troops that died awaiting care

Kuauhtemoc Rodriguez

Kuauhtemoc Rodriguez isn't just a whistleblower in the Veterans Affairs Administration. He happens to be the Chief of Specialty Care Clinics at the Phoenix VA Health Care System, the same system of VA hospitals which were at the center of the firestorm of the scandalous controversy of 2014. Freethinkers may recall the Phoenix VA hospital was ground zero for a scheduling scandal where some 40 veterans passed away while waiting to see a doctor at the VA.

The scandal led to the firing of several senior-level hospital administrators, criminal investigations by the FBI, several bills in Congress passed to protect veteran's healthcare needs, and eventually led to the replacement of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. President Obama replaced VA Sec. Eric Shinseki with former Proctor & Gamble CEO Robert A. McDonald. But Phoenix, AZ's Rodriguez says more work still needs to be done, and he blew the whistle again in March 2016, on the VA's handling of canceling appointments. Recall that the first scandal involved veterans not being able to get an appointment in time, leading to several deaths. Rodriguez noticed appointments made by veterans who had already passed away were being cancelled by those same dead veterans.

Comment: The whistleblower is still unprotected and remains the target of a corrupt status quo, wrongdoing by the PTB and efforts to effect corporate coverups.VA hospitals are secretly rated. Thirteen received only one star, with the Phoenix facility consistently tagged with that rating, even though funding has greatly increased throughout the system. Even if received, healthcare for veterans is grossly compromised at these facilities, compounded by scandal and witch hunts. Can Trump make a difference? He said he would:

Ruckus in progress as Turkish parliament debates new constitution

Turkish parliament
© Stringer/ReutersBrawling or Turkish line dancing...Scuffle along, gents!
The fifth article of a constitutional reform package has been adopted by the Turkish parliament amid a mass brawl between the ruling party and members of the opposition.

Lawmakers convened in Ankara on Wednesday to debate an 18-article series of constitutional reforms that will be put to a referendum later this year. The fracas began when members of the Republican People's Party (CHP) complained about MPs from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) openly casting their votes in what was supposed to be a secret ballot on the third article of the new constitution. Opposition lawmakers were concerned that the open vote was an attempt to put pressure on MPs who might be considering casting their ballots against the reforms, according to the Turkish daily Hurriyet.

Comment: Well, we can see why Erdogan fits right in as the leader of this pack.

Ten US aircraft carriers aligned in a row

US aircraft carriers at port
Readers have asked me why 10 of 11 US aircraft carriers are lined up in a row in dock allegedly for maintanence. It reminds them of the battleships at Pearl Harbor. Readers ask if this could be an indication that the Deep State is planning a false flag attack on the carriers, as was carried out on the World Trade Center and Pentagon in order to get the US at war with the independent Muslim world, this time in order to get the US at war with Russia before Trump can restore normal relations.

I don't think so. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was real, if provoked. The deception apparently was in the fact that Washington had warning but did not share it with the US Navy in Pearl Harbor. The Battleships were outmoded weapons, and the aircraft carriers had been removed. It would be extremely difficult to blame a false flag attack on US aircraft carriers on Russia. Indeed, if Russia wants to attack the US, the target would not be obsolete weapons such as aircraft carriers.

China's new recon ship matched only by Russia and US

China electronic intel ship
© One America News
Just after Donald Trump's secretary of state pick, Rex Tillerson, slammed Chinese naval activity, the Chinese military unveiled a new electronic surveillance ship that reveals its maritime scouting capabilities for the first time, state media reported.

The People's Liberation Army deployed the new vessel, the CNS Kaiyangxing (also known as Mizar), with the North Sea Fleet in Qingdao, Shandong province, the English-language China Daily newspaper said on Wednesday. According to the report, the Kaiyangxing is so technologically advanced that only Russia or the United States could present viable competitors.

With a top speed of 20 knots (37 kilometers per hour) and a displacement of 6,000 metric tons, the Kaiyangxing is a Type 815A electronic reconnaissance ship armed with three small-caliber guns and surveillance systems that can monitor multiple targets through severe weather conditions. According to an anonymous insider from the Chinese shipbuilding industry, more vessels such as the Kaiyangxing are needed because of the rising geopolitical tensions over the South China Sea.

The PLA also revealed that it now has six such vessels: the Beijixing (Polaris), Tianwangxing (Uranus), Tianlangxing (Sirius), Haiwangxing (Neptune), Kaiyangxing (Mizar), and another unnamed ship known only by its hull code, 855. These ships regularly conduct surveillance of Japanese and American vessels in the South and East China Seas.

Comment: Will China be Trump's sticky wicket? The dragon is already provoked and unlikely to back down from any intimidation by the US.
