Saudi King Salman, 81, may abdicate from the throne in favor of his 32-year-old son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Arab media has reported in the light of seismic events that rocked the kingdom over the weekend.

The king will announce the decision within "the next two nights," the Iranian news channel PressTV reported Wednesday, citing information from Rai al-Youm, a website publishing news and analyses on the Arab world.

Earlier on Wednesday, Saudi-owned television channel Al-Arabiya announced the news on Twitter, but later the post was deleted, according to the report.

The information is not officially confirmed. Riyadh has not made any statement regarding the issue.

"The expected development marks a change in the order of succession in Saudi Arabia from lateral lines of elderly brothers to a vertical order under which the king hands power to his favorite son," PressTV reported.

Comment: We'll have to see. This could just be information warfare. But if it happens, it's big news. MBS's rise has been called "meteoric". This would seal the deal. Since the 4th, the Saudis have apparently arrested more than 1300 individuals. Sources told New Khaleej that the prince killed in the helicopter 'crash' was deliberately targeted:
According to the sources, Bin Muqrin had recently sent a letter to some 1,000 princes urging them to step away from support for Bin Salman's succession to the throne, pointing out that the youth must take action.

China calls for patience over probe of chemical weapons use in Syria

UN Security Council

A Chinese envoy called on the Security Council members to be patient on Tuesday over the investigation of the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The Security Council was briefed Tuesday afternoon on the findings of a latest report of the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the United Nations.

Since there is call within the Security Council for the improvement of JIM's methodology and a refinement of its mandate, Security Council members should continue to patiently negotiate on JIM's methodology, its mandate and the extension of its mandate and strive for a united message, said Wu Haitao, the charges d'affaires of the Chinese mission to the United Nations.

"This will help find out the truth of the attacks and bring those responsible to justice and deter attacks in Syria in the future," Wu told the council.

Comment: The Russians were a little less patient - understandably so:

Fares Shehabi, the Member of Parliament for Aleppo, then went onto say that "We have to wait & see in what other form & outfit the new terror group in western intelligence design rooms will look like".

Comment: Thank you Mr Putin. Without the intervention of Russia this victory for the Syrian Army and the Syrian people would have not been achieved.

Bernie Sanders on Paradise Papers leak: 'International oligarchy will soon rule the world'

US senator warned that leak of documents exposing offshore tax havens show 'rapid movement' toward a group of billionaires controlling the global economy

Bernie Sanders has warned that the world is rapidly becoming an "international oligarchy" controlled by a tiny number of billionaires, highlighted by the revelations in the Paradise Papers.

Comment: Newsflash to The Guardian and Bernie: an int'l oligarchy - one based primarily in their respective countries - has ruled the world for some time.

In a statement to the Guardian in the wake of the massive leak of documents exposing the secrets of offshore investors, Sanders said that the enrichment of wealthy individuals and companies in tax havens was "the major issue of our time".

He said the Paradise Papers opened the door on a "major problem not just for the US but for governments throughout the world".

Comment: Total BS. What the Paradise Papers reveal is that Trump's Republicans are absolutely right to reform the US tax code so that it's a little bit harder for schemers like Schumer and Soros to leech off the US economy.

In that context, maybe what Bernie is really saying is: 'an international oligarchy already rules the world, but we're terrified that a more enlightened oligarchy may muscle in on our scheme...'

Wikileaks: CIA created hacking tool to impersonate Russia's Kaspersky Lab

WikiLeaks says it has published the source code for the CIA hacking tool 'Hive,' which indicates that the agency-operated malware could mask itself under fake certificates and impersonate public companies, namely Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab.

The CIA multi-platform hacking suite 'Hive' was able to impersonate existing entities to conceal suspicious traffic from the user being spied on, the source code of the malicious program indicates, WikiLeaks said on Thursday.

The extraction of information would therefore be misattributed to an impersonated company, and at least three examples in the code show that Hive is able to impersonate Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab, WikiLeaks stated.

At least $100 billion has been misused in Saudi Arabia as part of various types of corruption and embezzlement over several decades, according to Saudi Arabia's attorney general. It comes amid a major anti-corruption effort in the Gulf nation.

"Based on our investigations over the past three years, we estimate that at least $100 billion has been misused through systematic corruption and embezzlement over several decades," Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb said in a statement, according to SPA news agency.

"The potential scale of corrupt practices which have been uncovered is very large,'' the attorney general said.

The Sheikh went on to say that of the 208 people questioned in the crackdown, seven have been released without charge. He added that the personal details of those affected would not be revealed at this time, citing the suspects' legal rights.

Powerful Arab criminal clans are actively trying to plant their members into Berlin's police and other state services, a local German Police Union head has claimed. He went on to say the mafia gangs are seeking to control police actions.

Large criminal networks of migrant descent are seeking to provide some of their members access to the inner workings of state services, Bodo Pfalzgraf, the head of the Berlin branch of the German Police Union, told the German broadcaster ZDF on Wednesday. "The truth should be revealed," he said.

"There are clear indications that big Arab clans have a [infiltration] strategy and try to keep certain family members away from criminal activities so that they could later infiltrate state services," Pfalzgraf explained as he appeared on ZDF's 'Morgen Magazin' program. The migrant mafia has "a vital interest in first-hand knowledge of how the state works, how the police operate and when searches [and raids] are conducted," he said.

Putin: US wants to create problems with Russian presidential election

The Russian President has said he is "worried" Washington has plans to stir up trouble at the 2018 presidential election, in response to Moscow's alleged meddling in last year's vote in the US.

"In response to our alleged interference in their election, [the Americans] want to create problems with the presidential election in Russia," Putin stated Thursday. In order to do so, Washington might use its "broad connections and dependency" mechanisms in the Olympics committee, the Russian leader said during his official visit to the city of Chelyabinsk.

The president said he is "worried" and has "strong suspicions" the US might attempt to create a certain "disgruntled" atmosphere in the sports community, as the 2018 Winter Olympic games and the election in Russia will closely coincide.

International sports organizations - including the IOC - are very dependent on Washington, Putin stressed. He added that the major companies paying for and providing broadcasting rights, as well as the main sponsors and advertisers, are based in the US.

Ex-president Obama reports for jury duty in Chicago, arrives in 6-car motorcade

obama jury duty
Former President Barack Obama reported for jury duty Wednesday morning at the Daley Center downtown, but was in the courthouse less than two hours before he was allowed to go home.

Obama worked the jury room, greeting and thanking other citizens for their jury service. At one point he looked over the room and said, "This looks like Chicago!"

Obama spent the night at his home in Kenwood before leaving for jury duty shortly after 9:30 a.m., in a motorcade of four black SUVs, a marked Chicago police SUV, and a marked Illinois State Police SUV.

After navigating through stop-and-go traffic in the Loop, he arrived at the Daley Center courthouse around 10 a.m., and entered the building through the basement.

US orders RT America to register as 'foreign agent', threatens to arrest channel's head and freeze bank accounts

newsroom
Washington will apply its Foreign Agents Registration Act to RT America, the channel has announced. The Department of Justice has given the broadcaster until Monday to register as a foreign agent, otherwise the channel's head faces arrest and its accounts could be frozen.

The piece of legislation was adopted in the US in 1938 to counter pro-Nazi agitation on US soil. Washington has made the decision to apply the act towards the company that supplies all services for RT America on its territory, including TV production and operations. Just over 400 entities are currently registered under the legislation, but it does not include a single media outlet.

The move "will have serious legal consequences" and "compromise the safety of [RT] employees," the Russian Foreign Ministry previously explained.

RT's editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, said on Thursday that the timeframe provided for the company by the DoJ is a "cannibalistic deadline."

She previously said that the channel was being forced into "conditions in which we cannot work" in the US, and called Washington's demand an attempt to "drive [RT] out of the country."

Comment: This is a clear attempt to drive RT out of the US because of its ability to report on the true nature of what the US government is doing. The irony is that forcing RT out of America is pointless because RT is not dependent on having a physical presence in the USA to spread the truth.
