'New World Order' is disintegrating, something else is happening

One of the more welcomed outcomes of the paring back of the U.S. State Department bureaucracy is the elimination of scores of "status quo enthusiasts." Since the end of World War II, the State Department's ranks have been populated by foreign service officers and career diplomats who have championed the international status quo.

These minions of Foggy Bottom received encouragement for their protective stance on post-World War II and the Cold War in President George H. W. Bush's speech on September 11, 1990, which was titled, "Toward a New World Order." Under the "new world order," regional and global security concerns would supplant democratic independence movements. The immediate effect of this "order" was brutal crackdowns on secession in the periphery of the former Soviet Union, including Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria, as well as in Somalia, the Kurdish regions of Iraq and Turkey, East Timor, Sudan, and Ethiopia. However, in Yugoslavia, which the United States and European Union wanted to see dissolved, secessionists in seven constituent states were encouraged to secede from the federation. That resulted in the bloodiest military conflicts in Europe since World War II.

Comment: There appears to be an 'independence' dynamic gaining momentum, breathing fresh air into global oppression and gridlock. Massive change-ups within the US State Department that has historically dominated and consumed countries of lesser means, along with the rise in influence of a multi-polar world cooperative from Russia and China have encouraged this impetus, for better or worse.

Polexit? A new Iron Curtain divides Europe into conservative East v liberal West

BanMerk
© Kacper Pempel / ReutersFar-right National Radical Camp (ONR) protests EU plans to take legal action against Poland.
Rudyard Kipling once wrote that "East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." The poet was referring to his experiences in India and Britain, but the line could increasingly apply to modern Europe.

Donald Tusk lobbed a grenade into the room last week when he warned that Poland, his homeland, could feasibly follow Britain out of the European Union in the future. Speaking to a Warsaw news weekly, the EU president suggested Polish attitudes may change if the country eventually becomes a net contributor to the bloc's finances.

Of course, there are internal political dynamics behind Tusk's warning, given the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party is the primary opponent of Civic Platform (PO), which he co-founded and led for 11 years.

Under Tusk's guidance, the latter party pursued a liberal pro-European course modelled on Angela Merkel's German Christian Democrats. By contrast, PiS are nationalist conservatives, strongly opposed to unfettered immigration and skeptical of Brussels. However, they don't seem to have qualms about accepting EU cash with Poland currently the biggest recipient, at $10 billion annually.

Bannon under subpoena, refuses to talk in Russia probe

U.S. President Donald Trump's former chief strategist Steve Bannon has refused to comply with a subpoena ordering him to answer questions from a congressional committee investigating alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

After Bannon initially refused to answer questions at an hours-long private meeting with the U.S. House of Representatives Intelligence Committee on January 16, legislators said the committee's chairman Devin Nunes authorized a subpoena during the meeting to force Bannon to respond.

Even then, Bannon refused to answer questions after his lawyer conferred with the White House and was told to refuse to answer questions about the transition period after Trump was elected in November 2016 and before he took office in January 2017, or about Bannon's time at the White House, according to Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the committee.

"This was effectively a gag order by the White House," Schiff said. A spokeswoman for Bannon did not respond to requests for comment.

Comment: It is not hard to imagine Bannon refusing to comply. He seems capable of being a strong-headed, one-man show. Does it, instead, speak to Trump loyalty? As with most things 'Trump' there is a purposeful layer of confusion.

Federal employees overwhelmingly believe President Trump does not respect them, according to a new survey, and a plurality think he has negatively affected their agencies' missions.

Overall, 59 percent of federal employees disapprove of how Trump is handling his job as president after his first year in office, while 38 percent approve, according to a Government Business Council and GovExec.com survey. His disapproval is slightly higher among federal workers as measured by GBC than in the average of polls among the American public writ large, and his numbers among feds have dipped slightly since May from a GBC poll conducted after Trump's first 100 days in office.

Just 28 percent of federal employees believe Trump respects them, while 58 percent think he does not, the GBC survey found. The president has, at times, disparaged federal workers at agencies such as the FBI and in the intelligence community, and his Office of Management and Budget has called on all agencies to come up with comprehensive plans for reducing their workforces.

Comment: How the president issues respect may just have something to do with the level of non-bias attitude, integrity and compliance to the law regarding federal employee service to the people and the nation.

A passenger plane flying over the Pacific in November actually witnessed part of a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in action, according to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Tillerson mentioned the incident while stressing the importance of fully enforcing sanctions against North Korea at a meeting of the Vancouver Group Tuesday. Discussing the threat posed by North Korean ballistic missile tests to civilian aircraft in the Sea of Japan, he warned that such tests could potentially strike civilian aircraft in what would be a calamitous escalation for the world.

"My point is this: North Korea's willingness to launch missiles at any time presents a threat to people of all nationalities in the region's airspace each day," Tillerson said Tuesday. North Korea conducted 15 ballistic missile tests and one nuclear test in 2017 but has yet to conduct any test in 2018, despite false alarms raised in both Japan and Hawaii in recent days.

The secretary of state made specific reference to a flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong on November 28, 2017. The passengers on board reportedly witnessed the incident approximately 280 nautical miles from where the missile ultimately crashed in the Sea of Japan. Tillerson did not comment on whether the incident forced a course correction.

Republicans criticize, condemn Trump's 'fake news awards' as fodder for comedians

President Donald Trump promised to hand out "fake news awards" for the "most corrupt and biased" media on Wednesday. The White House has been light on the details, but the event has drawn both criticism and ridicule.

"The Fake News Awards, those going to the most corrupt & biased of the Mainstream Media, will be presented to the losers on Wednesday, January 17th, rather than this coming Monday. The interest in, and importance of, these awards is far greater than anyone could have anticipated!" Trump tweeted on January 7.

The White House has yet to release details on who the nominees are, where the ceremony will happen or what kinds of awards will be handed out by the president.

Ex-SBU employee calls for ethnic cleansing and total destruction of dissidents in Ukraine.

Yuri Mikhalchishin, ex-advisor to the head of the SBU and one of the leaders of the Svoboda party has published in his blog on the Ukrainian portal ZIK a list of so-called "operational-tactical tasks of Ukrainian nationalism for 2018."

According to Mikhalchishin, the era of Western domination is ending, and it makes no sense for Ukraine to "stand in line for a third-class passenger ticket for a Titanic, which has already met the iceberg."

He also said that today in Ukraine, under the external management of the West, the destruction of the remnants of sovereignty and social state is on course. In his opinion, this is a threat to the national statehood, equivalent to the Russian one.

At the same time, the Nazi called for preparing to rebuff the "Polish spring" in Lviv and the "Hungarian spring" in Uzhgorod by the methods which, he said, stopped the "Russian world" in Kharkov.

Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines took to social media on Sunday to hurl some sarcasm-laden personal insults at President Trump, slamming him as "mentally ill and elderly."

"Listen, I think it's unbelievable how people are badmouthing the President! It's unacceptable!" Maines wrote in an Instagram post, with a photo of President Trump alongside several world leaders.

"This is our President! How dare you make fun of the mentally ill and elderly," the country singer wrote. "Not to mention, he's the President of our United States Of America! Unbelievable. Don't you know we live in a democracy?! You can't do that sort of thing. What are you thinking?!"

Maines' insults came mere days after White House doctor Ronny Jackson declared that President Trump is in "excellent health."

Comment: Not only is stable genius Trump in good shape for his age, his mental faculties are doing just fine: Trump scores another win: US Navy doctor pronounces him in excellent mental and physical health.

Ahed Tamimi, 16, has been held in an Israeli prison for nearly a month since her arrest last December 19 for slapping a soldier. Today a military court in Ofer prison inside occupied territory extended her detention indefinitely, till she is tried.

B'Tselem reports:
Today (Wednesday, 17 Jan. 2018), a military judge approved the prosecution's request to remand 'Ahed and Nariman Tamimi in custody....

Remand for the duration of the proceedings means that a person continues to be held in custody after the investigation has been concluded and an indictment filed, until all legal proceedings, including judgment and sentencing are over. During this time, the detainee is not serving a prison sentence and is supposed to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The Guardian quotes the judge:
"I found no alternative other than to order her detention in custody until the end of proceedings," the judge ruled.... "The gravity of the offences of which she is accused does not allow an alternative to custody."
