NSA deletes surveillance data it had previously committed to preserving

NSA Building

The agency tells a federal judge that it is investigating and 'sincerely regrets its failure.'

The National Security Agency destroyed surveillance data it pledged to preserve in connection with pending lawsuits and apparently never took some of the steps it told a federal court it had taken to make sure the information wasn't destroyed, according to recent court filings.

Word of the NSA's foul-up is emerging just as Congress has extended for six years the legal authority the agency uses for much of its surveillance work conducted through U.S. internet providers and tech firms. President Donald Trump signed that measure into law Friday.

Since 2007, the NSA has been under court orders to preserve data about certain of its surveillance efforts that came under legal attack following disclosures that President George W. Bush ordered warrantless wiretapping of international communications after the 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S. In addition, the agency has made a series of representations in court over the years about how it is complying with its duties.

Comment: So let's get this straight, the NSA, with it's massive black budget and fancy surveillance toys, had to delete old data in order to make space for new incoming data? That's the oldest excuse in the spook's handbook and really quite laughable in this day of cheap memory.

'Amerikagate'? Russia accuses US of secret opposition funding to destabilize country

The Russian Foreign Ministry has accused the United States of a secret funding of opposition groups, aimed at destabilization of the country.

"Unlike US embassies, which often use covert money transfers to fund various kinds of opposition groups, with the aim, among other things, to destabilize domestic political situations; this is something that Russia does not do," the ministry noted in an official statement.

The ministry has also demanded Washington to punish those responsible for the disclosure of the confidential data, commenting on Buzzfeed's release of transactions, carried out by Russian diplomatic offices in the US, as well as some of the country's diplomats.

"We urge the US to stop this practice, return to decent behavior, and to resume responsible and orderly interstate communication," the diplomat stressed. "We demand that US authorities finally begin to implement their own national legislation and international obligations, immediately stop the illegal dissemination of confidential information affecting the interests of the Russian Federation and bring to justice those responsible, including those who hold the appropriate posts in the US state apparatus."

The statement went on by calling Buzzfeed an information tool of the US intelligence services.

SOTT Focus: US Needs Sh*thole Countries, Not the Other Way Around

america shining city hill
We may never know what exactly President Trump said during a meeting on immigration, but Trump supporters - including popular media figures such as Tomi Lahren - overwhelmingly relished the use of the word "sh*ithole" to describe poor nations. Why Christians would mock the poor is beyond comprehensible; from a diplomatic perspective, this is obviously wrong; and from a human perspective, it's cruel. However, there are many conservatives who seem to only understand the language of money and self-interest. They also seem to believe that America is the center of the world, but fail to comprehend how the US is extremely dependent on the rest of the world.

Haiti and Congo

Take, for example, Haiti and Congo - two sh*thole countries. These two countries can quickly threaten America's economic and national security. Haiti can cut ties with the US and strike a deal with Russia to create a military base or a missile defense system. It will be a sweet revenge for Putin who's threatened by US missile systems in Eastern Europe.

Donald Trump's first year: The illusion of choice

Donald Trump
© Carlos Barria / Reuters
The striking thing about Trump's first twelve months compared to the Obama administration is not how different his foreign policies have been, but how similar.

January 20 marks one year since Donald Trump officially became the 45th President of the United States. His supporters, boosted by comments the Donald made on the campaign trail, hoped his Presidency would mark a shift away from a neocon/liberal interventionist foreign policy. In fact we've just had more of the same.

The old French saying 'plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose (the more things change the more they stay the same)' springs readily to mind. As indeed does the late George Carlin's comment about Americans only having the "illusion of choice" on the things that really matter.

Comment: And Trump gets to celebrate his first year with a government shutdown: US government shuts down after Senate rejects one-month stopgap spending bill

'Democrats shut government down but struggle to explain why'

While they may not be able to admit it publicly (or even to themselves), it's clear that the Democrats have deliberately manufactured a government shutdown. Banking on a complicit media and a confused electorate, they have now fully embraced a political tactic they decried for eight years under President Obama.

Charges that this shutdown is the fault of Republicans, or that Democrats haven't been part of the negotiations leading to the spending bill they rejected, are not true. Instead what's obvious is that Democrats methodically engineered a situation where the government could shut down over the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Here are the steps they employed to get us here.

'Sovereignty and security violation': Beijing outraged by US warship sailing off disputed island

China has slammed a US missile destroyer for encroaching on the "indisputable" Huangyan Dao island in the South China Sea, warning that it can and will take "necessary measures to firmly safeguard its sovereignty."

In this latest clash over freedom of navigation in the disputed South China Sea, the USS Hopper missile destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles of Huangyan Dao, a tiny island claimed by China, on January 17. The vessel failed to get Beijing's permission for entering the waters and was intercepted by the Chinese Navy, with China's Foreign Ministry accusing the US of violating "sovereignty and security interests" as well as posing a "grave threat" to its forces stationed in the area.

"China is strongly dissatisfied with that and will take necessary measures to firmly safeguard its sovereignty," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said in a statement on Saturday. He also warned US forces against further "provocative moves" for the sake of "China-US relations and regional peace and stability."

A stopgap spending bill stalled in the Senate Friday night, leading to a government shutdown for the first time since 2013.

The continuing resolution funding agencies expired at midnight, and lawmakers were unable to spell out any path forward to keep government open. The Senate on Friday night failed to reach cloture on a four-week spending bill the House had already approved. A majority of the chamber voted in favor of cloture, but the Senate did not clear the 60-vote threshold necessary to proceed.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., took to the floor shortly after midnight, each assigning blame to the other party for the lapse in appropriations. McConnell said he planned to offer language to change the date of the next continuing resolution to Feb. 8 rather than Feb. 16, the date in the House version that the Senate rejected. McConnell said he could not get a vote on that new date right away, however.

Comment: The Guardian reports:
Federal law requires agencies to shut down if Congress has not appropriated money to fund them. Hundreds of thousands of "non-essential" federal employees will be put on temporary unpaid leave. In previous shutdowns, services deemed "essential", such as the work of the homeland security and the FBI, have continued.

On Saturday morning, Donald Trump greeted the news with a typical flurry of tweets. "This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency," he wrote, "and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present. #DemocratShutdown."

[...] The bill did not contain any provisions to protect Dreamers, which has been a key Democratic priority since Trump announced in September that he was rescinding an Obama-era program, known as Daca, that enabled undocumented migrants brought to the US as children to obtain temporary legal status.

[...] A source briefed on the meeting said Schumer offered not only to meet Trump's full funding request for a border wall but also agreed to boosting defense spending "far above" what the White House requested.

In exchange, Schumer requested a short-term measure that would keep the government open for a few days, in the hopes of reaching a broader compromise. The president seemed amenable to Schumer's approach, the source said, and told the Democratic leader he would broach the topic with Republicans.

But not long after Schumer returned to the Capitol, he received a phone call from John Kelly, the White House chief of staff. Kelly, a hardliner on immigration, informed Schumer the deal discussed with Trump was too liberal.

As lawmakers scrambled, progressive activists and Dreamers held a rally against the illuminated backdrop of the Capitol. They implored lawmakers to reject any funding measure that did not include a pathway to citizenship for the nearly 700,000 Dreamers whose protections will expire in March.
The White House supports paying bureaucrats to be furloughed during shutdown:
The Trump administration is supporting back pay for federal employees set to be furloughed during a government shutdown, making the announcement just hours before a deadline for Congress to act to keep agencies open.

The administration is seeking to limit the number of employees who would face an immediate furlough, senior administration officials told reporters Friday night, looking to keep agencies temporarily afloat with unobligated funds that remain valid when the current continuing resolution expires at midnight. Agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency and Federal Communications Commission said they have sufficient carry-over funds to last about a week after a shutdown.

As release of FISA memo looms, Hillary Clinton desperately tries to distract

russian collusion flow chart
On Thursday, the House Intelligence Committee quietly voted to make available to fellow House members "a memo documenting abuse of the FISA program," reports Fox News' Chad Pergram.

Shortly afterwards, Rep. DeSantis (R-FL) said the classified report compiled by the House Intelligence Committee is "deeply troubling" and raises serious questions as it relates to the 'Russian collusion' investigation.

News of the FISA memo sent shock waves through social media Thursday.

Comment: Sit back and enjoy the show, folks. Will the FISA memo be released to the public? Is it as damning to Hillary as people are speculating? Will slippery Hillary actually go to jail if it is? Hopefully yes to all of the above!

Defense Secretary Mattis says government shutdown will have 'terrible impact' on troops

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Friday morning that a government shutdown would have a "terrible impact" on military operations.

"Our maintenance activities will probably pretty much shut down. We will not be able to induct any more of our gear that need maintenance," he said Friday morning at the Johns Hopkins University, where he was unveiling the National Defense Strategy.

The government is barreling towards a shutdown at 11:59 p.m. Friday night, with the Senate unable to pass a 2018 spending bill or a stop-gap measure to keep the government running.

At issue is immigration reform. Democrats have refused to pass a spending measure unless there is a fix for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which the president rescinded last year, but gave Congress until March 5 to fix.

Republicans argue Democrats are willing to put the issue ahead of the U.S. military, which has been seriously affected by budget instability.

In the event of a shutdown, troops and some civilians will continue to report to work and accrue pay, but will not receive paychecks during the shutdown.

'Explosive' FISA Memo that will 'put people in jail' is released to House of Representatives

memo wikileak
All hell is breaking loose in Washington D.C. after a four-page memo detailing extensive FISA court abuse was made available to the entire House of Representatives Thursday. The contents of the memo are so explosive, says Journalist Sara Carter, that it could lead to the removal of senior officials in the FBI and the Department of Justice and the end of Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation.
These sources say the report is "explosive," stating they would not be surprised if it leads to the end of Robert Mueller's Special Counsel investigation into President Trump and his associates. -Sara Carter
A source close to the matter tells Fox News that "the memo details the Intelligence Committee's oversight work for the FBI and Justice, including the controversy over unmasking and FISA surveillance." An educated guess by anyone who's been paying attention for the last year leads to the obvious conclusion that the report reveals extensive abuse of power and highly illegal collusion between the Obama administration, the FBI, the DOJ and the Clinton Campaign against Donald Trump and his team during and after the 2016 presidential election.
