Britain outmatched by Russia's military says UK army chief

Britain would struggle to match Russia's military capabilities on the battlefield, the head of the U.K. army will say in a speech on January 22.

In an address to the Royal United Services Institute, Chief of the General Staff Nick Carter is expected to say Russia is building increasingly aggressive and expeditionary forces while already demonstrating its use of superior long-range missiles in Syria.

The speech, which was approved by Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson, will warn that Britain risks falling further behind potential adversaries unless it increases investments in its military operations.

"The time to address these threats is now -- we cannot afford to sit back," he is expected to say, according to military officials. "Our ability to pre-empt or respond to threats will be eroded if we don't keep up with our adversaries. We must take notice of what is going on around us or our ability to take action will be massively constrained. Speed of decision making, speed of deployment, and modern capability are essential if we wish to provide realistic deterrence."

Former UK envoy Peter Ford: US aims to prevent Syria's stabilization

Syria circles
© Infowars
Sputnik spoke to former UK ambassador to Syria, Peter Ford, to ask whether any further US involvement in the Syrian conflict is only likely to exacerbate division in the country, thus perpetuating the war.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson suggested on Wednesday that the Trump administration would be taking on an open-ended military commitment to Syria as part of a stated strategy to prevent the regrowth of Daesh and to forge a new 'solution' that hopes to remove Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power.

Sputnik: The US - under both the Obama and Trump administrations - has long framed its objective in Syria rather narrowly to the defeat of Daesh. Now that the terrorist group's so-called caliphate is effectively gone, and there are forces in the country - such as the Syrian Arab Army - capable of destroying any possible Daesh resurgence, why does the US need to remain?

Peter Ford: Well 'it doesn't' is the simple and obvious truth. In its own eyes, it needs to remain because Trump is being accused of having lost Syria to the Russians. This is, quite simply, now a power play by the US to show that it still has influence in Syria and the wider Middle East, and it's part of the US power game against Iran. It has nothing to do with removing terrorism from Syria, nothing to do with humanitarian issues, nothing to do with democracy in Syria. It's quite simply arm wrestling that the United States wishes to engage in with Russia or any other power that dares to question, in the slightest way, American pre-eminence in the world.

Comment: The short game and the long game have become synonymous and evident. There is no one left to fool. Time for the US to find a respectable way out while it still can.

Pence: US to move embassy to Jerusalem next year

The US Embassy in Israel will relocate to Jerusalem next year, Vice President Mike Pence has said. It comes less than two months after Donald Trump formally recognized the city as the capital of Israel.

Pence's remark was made during a visit to Jerusalem on Monday, which is part of his official visit to the Middle East. "In the weeks ahead, our administration will advance its plan to open the US embassy in Jerusalem - and that United States embassy will open before the end of next year," he said in a speech to the Israeli parliament in Jerusalem, as quoted by Reuters.

"Jerusalem is Israel's capital - and, as such, President Trump has directed the State Department to begin initial preparations to move our embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem," he added, declining to give an exact date of when the embassy would open. It comes after US President Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in early December, prompting protests in the West Bank and around the world.

Shutdown Day 3: Senate again fails to reach funding deal

CapitolDream
© Houston Chronicle
US Senate members have failed to strike a deal to end the government shutdown, pushing the deadline back by 11 hours. After hours of deliberations, Democratic and Republican senators failed to reach a federal funding deal to end the government shutdown that started Friday. The vote, initially planned for 1am Monday, has been postponed until noon.

"It would be my intention to proceed to legislation that would address DACA, border security and related issues. It is also my intention to take up legislation on increased defense spending, disaster relief and other important matters," Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on the Senate floor.

At midnight, Friday, the federal government ground to a halt. Lawmakers, however, continued discussions on the Senate floor which have so far produced no results. Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

DACA allows undocumented immigrants, the so-called 'Dreamers' who were brought to America as children to remain in the country. Democrats want the GOP to continue supporting the "Dreamers." Republicans, however, maintain the DACA demand is tantamount to holding the budget debate hostage, and believe the issue is irrelevant in the current context. Other issues dealing with immigration also contributed to the stalemate.

Comment: The US government has become is its own hostage, self-directed incompetency.

Someone's lying: FBI says five months of texts 'lost', yet Inspector-General Horowitz says his office received them in August

Michael Horowitz DOJ
DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee
A major contradiction has been discovered between yesterday's revelation that the FBI "lost" five months of text messages, and a claim by the DOJ's Inspector General, Michael Horowitz - who claimed his office received the texts in question between FBI employees Peter Strzok and his mistress Lisa Page last August.

Knowledge of the missing texts was revealed in a Saturday letter from Ron Johnson (R-WI), Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC) - after the Committee received an additional 384 pages of text messages between Strzok and Page, several of which contained anti-Trump / pro-Clinton bias. The new DOJ submission included a cover letter from the Assistant AG for Legislative Affairs, Stephen Boyd, claiming that the FBI was unable to preserve text messages between the two agents for a five month period between December 14, 2016 and May 17, 2017 - due to "misconfiguration issues" with FBI-issued Samsung 5 devices used by Strzok and Page (despite over 10,000 texts which were recovered from their devices without incident).

Strzok/Page texts suggest Lynch may have been coordinating with Comey in Clinton email investigation

lynch comey
Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch knew well in advance of FBI Director James Comey's 2016 press conference that he would recommend against charging Hillary Clinton, according to information turned over to the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Friday.

The revelation was included in 384 pages of text messages exchanged between FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, and it significantly diminishes the credibility of Lynch's earlier commitment to accept Comey's recommendation - a commitment she made under the pretense that the two were not coordinating with each other.

And it gets worse. Comey and Lynch reportedly knew that Clinton would never face charges even before the FBI conducted its three-hour interview with Clinton, which was supposedly meant to gather more information into her mishandling of classified information.

On July 1, 2016, as the Lynch announcement became public, Page texted Strzok:
Page: And yeah, it's a real profile in couragw [sic], since she knows no charges will be brought.
There are other revelations within the text messages. But in the cover letter accompanying them, the FBI notified Congress that many additional text messages are missing. According to the FBI, its "technical system for retaining text messages sent and received on FBI mobile devices failed to preserve text messages for Mr. Strzok and Ms. Page from December 14, 2016 to approximately to [sic] May 17, 2017."

FISA court ruling: 85% of Obama's FBI/DOJ searches were illegal, shared with govt outsiders

obama
A Report was released in April of 2017 that received no publicity until recently. The report was a ruling on the results of an investigation or audit into FISA searches made by Obama's FBI and DOJ during Obama's time in office. The report shows Obama's FBI and DOJ participated in widespread criminal searches and criminal sharing of data with non authorized entities outside of government.

On April 26, 2017, an unsealed FISA Court Ruling unveiled a number of criminal activities that Barack Obama's FBI and DOJ participated in during his time in office. The report to date received little attention. Now interest is brewing due to the recent actions of Congress and the report that is expected to be released in the upcoming weeks.

The FISA Court Ruling shows widespread abuse of the FISA mandate. According to the report, Obama's FBI and DOJ performed searches on Americans that were against their 4th Amendment rights. This went on for years. One paragraph in the report states that 85% of the Section 704 and 705(b) FISA searches made during this time were non-compliant with applicable laws and therefore criminal.

FISA 705 warrants deal with US citizens outside of the country.

Did Turkey just checkmate the US in Syria?

Erdogan
© Adem Altan / AFP / Getty Images
Suddenly, the Syrian government, Egyptian government and an increasingly confused US as well as major EU powers are speaking in unison against Turkey's anti-YPG Operation Olive Branch.

This demonstrates a masterstroke in the joint diplomatic strategy of Russia, Syria and Turkey which although it does not officially exist, it has nevertheless been proved to be very real judging by the events on the ground in northern Syria, as well as the adversarial statements emanating from Damascus, aimed at Ankara.

The following represent the "official" situation surrounding Turkey's Operation Olive Branch:
  • Syria's position remains totally consistent in so far as it condemns any unapproved foreign incursions onto its territory whether by a state or a non-state terrorist group.
  • Turkey, while still occasionally offering anti-Damascus rhetoric, has pivoted the majority of its rhetoric. Now, the most numerous and most bold statements coming from Turkish officials regarding the conflict in Syria are focused on slamming the United States and its Kurdish proxies (whether it be the YPG, PYD, SDF or 'Border Force').
  • Turkey's military strategy follows this pivot as large numbers of Turkish military advisors and their Arab proxies fighting under the FSA flag have evacuated Idlib Governorate and joined the Turkish Army in northern Aleppo Governorate as part of Operation Olive Branch.
  • Egypt has condemned Turkey which is unsurprising due to President Sisi and President Erdogan's longstanding feud stemming from Turkey's support of the ousted Muslim Brotherhood regime in Cairo, but also due to Turkey's warming relations with Sudan, a country with whom Egypt has serious disputes.
  • France has spoken for the broader 'western alliance' and called for a UN Security Council meeting due to western 'concerns' over Operation Olive Branch.
  • Russia has expressed very muted concern about Operation Olive Branch, while Turkey insists that Russia has given a green light to the anti-Kurdish operation.
When taken at face value, this means that the US, France (which represents Europe more widely on the UNSC) and Egypt are now voicing a position that is more in-line with that of President al-Assad's Syrian government than that of Syrian ally Russia and NATO member Turkey.

Comment: Say what you will about Erdogan and Turkey, but this move was strategic genius (so far at least - we'll have to see how it ends up). See also: Here's Erdogan's response to U.S. calls to "limit the time and scope" of operation Olive Branch:
"The Afrin operation will end when it reaches its goal like the Euphrates Shield did," Erdogan said while addressing an awards ceremony in Ankara on Monday.

"The US says it 'should not last for too long.' And I'm asking the US, how long have you been in Afghanistan, when will it end? You came in Iraq before we came to power. Has the time duration ended in Iraq? You are still there," Erdogan said.

Turkey does not have any plans to take over "the territories of another country" and will eventually leave Syrian soil, he stressed. The operation is not targeting the Kurdish population, but solely terrorists, according to the Turkish leader.

"It is very clear that we do not have any problem with our Kurdish citizens; it is also not a matter of a Kurdish corridor," he stated. "The main purpose of this operation is to contribute to the safety of life and property of Syrian people as well as the territorial integrity of Syria along with Turkey's national security."
Pwned.

The Israeli army is finally worried that Gaza is on the brink of collapse. Why now?

palestine blackout

Last week Israeli military officials for the first time echoed what human rights groups and the United Nations have been saying for some time: that Gaza's economy and infrastructure stand on the brink of collapse.

They should know.

More than 10 years ago the Israeli army tightened its grip on Gaza, enforcing a blockade on goods coming in and out of the tiny coastal enclave that left much of the 2 million-strong population there unemployed, impoverished and hopeless.

Since then, Israel has launched three separate major military assaults that have destroyed Gaza's infrastructure, killed many thousands and left tens of thousands more homeless and traumatised.

Gaza is effectively an open-air prison, an extremely overcrowded one, with only a few hours of electricity a day and its ground water polluted by seawater and sewage.

After a decade of this horrifying experiment in human endurance, the Israeli army finally appears to be concerned about whether Gaza can cope much longer.
