Polar Silk Road coming soon! China unveils plans for OBOR expansion into the arctic

Beijing has announced plans to extend the ambitious Belt and Road Initiative to the Arctic by developing shipping routes.

In a white paper released on Friday, the country said it expects to have a "major role in expanding the network of shipping routes" and noted that "as a result of global warming, the Arctic shipping routes are likely to become important transport routes for international trade."

It added that it would encourage enterprises to build infrastructure and conduct commercial trial voyages, paving the way for Arctic shipping routes that would form a "Polar Silk Road."

Land territories in the Arctic cover an area of around 8 million square km, with sovereignty belonging to Russia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Canada and the United States. The Arctic Ocean is more than 12 million square km, where coastal and other countries share maritime rights and interests according to international law.

Despite being a non-Arctic state, China is increasingly active in the polar region. It became an observer member of the Arctic Council in 2013. The country has a major stake in the Russian Yamal liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, which is expected to supply China with 4 million tons of LNG per year.

White House: Trump warns Turkey over Syria incursion

The US president has told his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to rein in attacks on Syria's Kurdish enclave of Afrin, the White House says. Concerns that the NATO allies may come into conflict are rising.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has again been urged to "de-escalate" his military assault on Afrin, a Kurdish enclave in northern Syria.

Following similar calls from other world leaders, US President Donald Trump spoke by phone to his counterpart on Wednesday and called on Tutkey's government to "limit its military action and avoid civilian casualties," according to a White House statement.

Trump also warned Erdogan about "the destructive and false" anti-American rhetoric he said was emanating from Turkey as the NATO allies find themselves at odds over territory close to Turkey's border that is controlled by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in Syria.

Comment: You would think that Trump might be giving an ultimatum to Turkey, however:

'Who lost Turkey?' - The U.S.-Kurdish project in Syria endangers NATO

Turkey Syria border
Back in the 1950s the U.S. political sphere was poisoned by a groundless smear campaign against country-experts in the State Department who were identified as those who lost China. If the Trump administration proceeds on its current course we may soon see similar accusations. The accused, those "who lost Turkey", will again be the ones who warned of the possibility and not the real culprits.

The Turkish attack on the Kurd held Syrian canton of Afrin (Efrin) is not progressing as fast the Turks had hoped. The infantry component of the operation are Turkish proxy forces in Syria. These Chechen, Uighur, Turkestanis and other Takfiris are cannon fodder in the operations, not a well integrated component of an army.

The Stupid Party: Republicans sitting on evidence that clears Donald Trump

Russiagate

The Stupid Party Remains Stupid

In the 1970s neoconservative Irving Kristol aptly described the Republicans as "the stupid party." We are seeing this today in the hesitation of the House Intelligence Committee to release to the American public the results of its investigation of Russiagate.

The committee has released a description of its findings to members of the House, and most Republicans who have read it are demanding that it be released to the public as it clearly proves that Russiagate was an orchestrated conspiracy between the Democratic National Committee, the FBI, and the Obama Department of Justice against Donald Trump.

Apparently, Republicans are not smart enough to understand that to announce that you have proof that turns Russiagate away from President Trump and toward its DNC, FBI, and DOJ originators and then to sit on the information gives the Democrats and the presstitutes time to discredit the information in advance of its release.

Washington also stands to gain a new enemy in the betrayed Kurdish fighters along the Syrian-Turkish frontier

On January 23rd, this analysis piece written by The Duran's own Alexander Mercouris detailed the strategic steps and missteps that the American military and foreign policy directors have been taking with the Kurds, and with the Syrian situation overall.

One key point Alexander made was that it was likely that:
...Having armed the Kurds and encouraged them to create their own statelet in northern Syria in order to fight ISIS and destabilise the government in Damascus, the US is now preparing to abandon them to Turkey as soon as the going gets difficult.

Needless to say duplicity of this order is going to shatter trust in the US both amongst the Kurds and even in Turkey, which is not likely to forget any time soon the game the US attempted to play with the Kurds in Syria at its expense.
Well, he seems to have been correct, yet again.

Trump: Fighting back against Russia probe is self-defense, not obstruction

US President Donald Trump

President Trump defended his attacks on investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, denying that it amounts to obstruction and saying he was merely "fight[ing] back."

"There's been no collusion whatsoever," Trump told reporters in an impromptu press conference on Wednesday. "There's no obstruction whatsoever. And I'm looking forward to it."

Trump also mocked critics who have accused him of obstructing the Russia probe by attacking the investigations and referring to them as a "witch hunt."

"You fight back, oh, it's obstruction," Trump mockingly told reporters.

Here's why Europe must reject US blackmail over Iran's nuclear agreement

Trump Iran
The Trump administration has threatened to end the nuclear deal with Iran. In our last post we argued in detail that the attempt of the European 3, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, to soothe Trump by condemning Iran's ballistic missiles is itself a breach of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

The University of Alabama endorsed Moon of Alabama's legal reasoning :-). Professor Daniel Joyner, author of several books on international law, non-proliferation and the nuclear deal with Iran, responded to the piece:

Triggered Zionist: Israeli Defense Minister Lieberman urges ban against poet for calling hero Ahed Tamimi a hero

Ahed Tamimi
Poet and author Yehonatan Geffen is an iconic popular figure in Israeli culture since the 1970's. I grew up as a toddler on his children's books, and he has a lot to say to adults today. He is tongue-in-cheek and doesn't mince his words. The kind of guy who calls out Netanyahu for being a racist.

On Monday, he posted a poem on his Instagram which infuriated Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman so much that Lieberman called for the army radio to ban him and his work completely, also urging all media outlets to do the same.

Comment: If you are looking for the extreme of hypocritical snowflakery look no further than Israel. A teenage girl slaps a soldier and she is a terrorist. A poet writes a poem for her and he is desecrating Jewish history. When are people going to understand that if they don't simply accept the Israeli oppression of Palestine then you hurt Israel's precious feelings??
