India ready to bypass dollar in trade with Russia

© File PhotoFILE PHOTO: India PM Narendra Modi • Russian President Vladimir Putin. Moscow reportedly wants dollar payments for oil, ruble or rupee for rest.
A system allowing direct rupee-ruble payments in trade between Russia and India could be launched this week, the president of the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO), A Sakthivel, told CNBC on Wednesday. The arrangement would allow India and Russia to carry out financial operations bypassing the US dollar. Russia is effectively blocked from using US currency due to Western sanctions over the conflict in Ukraine.

According to the official, the Indian government is working on a proposal to allow up to five nationalized Indian banks to be engaged in the rupee-ruble trade mechanism, and discussions between the central bank governor, the finance minister, and the banks on the matter have already been held. The arrangement would let Indian exporters continue doing business with Russia despite sanctions banning, among other things, international payment mechanisms in the country, such as SWIFT. It would also let India continue buying Russian energy exports and other goods.

Comment: Citing a breach of contract, Europe balks at payment switch:
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Russian central bank, the government, and Gazprom to present proposals by March 31 for gas payments in rubles from "unfriendly countries," including all European Union states. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a conference call, referring to European customers:
"We are not going to supply gas for free, this is clear. In our situation, it is hardly possible and appropriate to engage in charity."
But the Group of Seven major economies has agreed to reject the demand, the German energy minister said on March 28. Robert Habeck told reporters that
"all G7 ministers agreed completely that this (would be) a one-sided and clear breach of the existing contracts. Payment in ruble is not acceptable and we will urge the companies affected not to follow Putin's demand."
Putin said on March 23 that Russia will implement the changes and stop accepting payments in currencies that have been "compromised" within one week.

Carlos Diaz, a gas and power analyst at Oslo-based Rystad Energy, told RFE/RL that Russia's existing long-term gas-export contracts with European countries stipulate payment in dollars and euros. In order to be paid in rubles, Russia would have to renegotiate those contracts, opening the door for European countries to drastically cut the amount of gas they are required to buy from Kremlin-controlled Gazprom each year as well as the length of the contract.

If Russia tries to force the situation, European countries can take Russia to arbitration court, a process that can last months or years.

Germany, Italy, Poland all say no to ruble payment.
Confirmation of EU energy independence date:
The European Commission has confirmed that it expects the EU to remain dependent on energy imports from Russia for at least another five years. European Commission Spokesperson for Climate Action and Energy Tim McPhie said the bloc would "be dependent on carbon fuels from Russia until 2027." McPhie said the EU had estimated it could reduce its dependence on Russian gas by two-thirds this year and that a detailed plan about how it would achieve this would be presented by the end of May.

Biden had met with Brussels officials to try to push for an embargo on Russian oil too, which Europe had refrained from imposing, citing recession fears.

The bloc said it had sought to ensure stable demand for additional US LNG of approximately 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas a year until at least 2030, "on the understanding that the price formula of LNG supplies to the EU should reflect long-term market fundamentals."
UAE says there is no substitute for Russian oil:
The world's energy markets need Russian oil and no producer can replace it, United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of Energy Suhail al-Mazrouei said on Monday.

Russia produces some 10 million barrels of oil a day, which makes it a critical member of the OPEC+ energy alliance, al-Mazrouei explained during an energy forum in Dubai.
"Leaving the politics aside, that volume is needed today," he insisted, adding that "unless someone is willing to come and deliver that amount, we don't see that someone can substitute Russia."
The United States, Europe, and others have been calling on Gulf Arab oil producers to ramp up production and help bring down crude prices, which at one point shot above $120 a barrel.

The EU stepped back from imposing an embargo on Russian crude and petroleum products, despite pressure from the US. An immediate embargo on Russia's fossil fuels "from one day to the next would mean plunging our country and the whole of Europe into a recession."

Qatar - which holds the third-largest natural gas reserves in the world - said last week that it was practically impossible to replace Russian gas on the European market.

Kiev's war crimes against Russian POWs discredit the US-led West's cause

There's no doubt that their MSM will suppress this incident and then shamelessly spin it however they think is necessary in order to downplay what happened and ultimately distract their audience into focusing on something else in the very near future, but those who've already been made aware of what just occurred know what they saw with their own eyes. As George Orwell wrote in his famous 1984:
"The party told you to reject all evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."
Shocking but not unsurprising footage has circulated across social media in recent days showing Kiev's fighters committing war crimes by torturing Russian prisoners of war (POW), some of whom seemed to have even died while these atrocious acts were being recorded. Russia immediately launched an investigation as did Kiev after senior presidential advisor Oleksiy Arestovych described it as "absolutely unacceptable behavior." Despite the latter's condemnation of these crimes, it's unlikely that he was speaking sincerely but rather simply wanted to do "damage control" since he realized how much this incident discredits the US-led West's cause in that country's conflict.

President Putin says 'unfriendly countries' must switch to its currency by March 31

Russian President Vladimir Putin has authorized the government, the central bank, and Gazprombank to take the necessary steps to switch all payments for Russian natural gas from "unfriendly states" to rubles starting March 31.

The measure targets "member states of the EU and other countries that have introduced restrictions against citizens of the Russian Federation and Russian legal entities," the mandate published on the Kremlin website reads.

Russia will stop shipping natural gas to countries refusing to settle payments in rubles, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

"All G7 ministers agreed completely that this [would be] a one-sided and clear breach of the existing contracts," German Energy Minister Robert Habeck told journalists on Monday.

The minister added that "payment in rubles is not acceptable" and that the nations will urge the companies affected "not to follow" the demand issued by Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.

On Monday, Putin ordered the government, the central bank, and Gazprombank to develop the necessary tools to switch all payments for Russian natural gas from "unfriendly states" to rubles from March 31.

This includes countries that have targeted Russia's financial system and seized its foreign reserves in response to the crisis in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia will stop shipping natural gas to countries that reject the demand.

Hunter Biden's laptops are now an active national security threat

An urgent concern for the country is the continuing threat to our national security posed by a compromised President Biden.

On Friday, The Daily Mail reported that emails recovered from Hunter Biden's laptop show he helped an infectious disease research company pursue projects in Ukraine. Those emails confirm portions of charges Russia made the previous day that an investment group run by the now-president's son had funded a company conducting research at biological laboratories in Ukraine.

While these developments add another scandal to the long list of Biden family dirty laundry, the more urgent concern for the country should be the continuing threat to our national security posed by a compromised President Biden and the possibility that Russia has access to the catalog of compromising material contained on Hunter's laptop.

Independent MPP Randy Hillier has been asked to surrender himself to the Ottawa Police over Freedom Convoy-related charges. Hillier, who represents the Ontario riding of Lanark — Frontenac — Kingston, is being charged on nine counts.

According to Hillier, he is being charged on three counts of counseling others to an uncommitted indictable offense, one count of obstructing a person who was aiding a public or peace officer, two counts of obstructing a public officer, one count of assault against a police officer and two counts of mischief to obstruct property greater than $5000 in value.

"I don't know how you can can obstruct property. Typically we think of obstructing people, not property," Hillier told The Post Millennial regarding the mischief to obstruct property charge.

Comment: Global News reports:
Hillier was permanently suspended from Twitter on Mar. 8 for his tweets about vaccine mandates and other public health measures. He had also previously made a racist comment about Transport Minister Omar Alghabra by calling him a "terrorist."

A week before his suspension on Twitter, Hillier announced he would not be seeking re-election, ending a 15-year run in provincial politics.

"Our political system is broken. There is no sense spending any more time trying to fix a broken system from within when the problem lies without," Hillier said in the video.

Hillier uploaded a video before he surrendered himself to police.

"Today going into the Ottawa police, I've been asked to surrender, face charges for expressing myself at the Freedom Convoy and I've been deemed that I have to prove that I'm not a danger to society to have my freedom," Hillier said.

In an emailed statement, Hillier said that he plans to defend himself against the charges and that "questioning and challenging public policy is the role and responsibility of any elected representative."

Miner backed by US oligarchs Gates & Bezos to start drilling in Greenland

Minerals

US-based mineral exploration company KoBold Metals said on Thursday it is ready to start drilling for nickel and other raw materials used in electric vehicles, amid skyrocketing prices brought about by Ukraine-related sanctions on Russia.

The company secured a 51% stake in the Disko-Nuussuaq project on Greenland's west coast last year, operated by UK-based Bluejay Mining. In their joint venture, the mining firms plan to drill a total of 3,000 meters in 2022 at depths of between 150 to 400 meters to get to where the metals are located.

"The objective is to target massive nickel, copper, cobalt and platinum group metals," Bluejay CEO Bo Stensgaard told Reuters.

The ambitious project comes as prices for metals, especially nickel, used in electric vehicle batteries more than doubled earlier in March amid Western sanctions imposed on Russia following its military operation in Ukraine. Russia supplies around 10% of the world's nickel needs, as well as 4% of cobalt. It is also the world's 8th largest copper producer and 4th largest supplier of platinum.

Comment: So it is a project heavily backed by US oligarchs and swamp creatures.

The US has for some years been heavily pushing for access to the minerals in Greenland. Greenland also serves very strategic military interests for the US, which has had a base in the North of Greenland since 1943. Trump did try to buy Greenland, but when this was rejected, a sweet deal in the purported form of financial aid served the purpose. China has been quite active with plans to extract fossil fuels, uranium and rare minerals, but have in the last few years been pushed out by the US.In other words, geopolitics is at play as always when it comes to resources. The new government elected in April 2021 further helped cement US access to Greenland at the expense of China. From an article in The Diplomat:
Second, Greenland's current politics need to be carefully considered when evaluating the possibilities for future Chinese investments. After the April 2021 Greenlandic elections, Inuit Ataqatigiit formed a coalition with Naleraq, ousting the social democratic Siumut party.

[...]

IA has favored a more cautious approach on both airports and mining, and during the election campaign the party mainly focused on the ambition of banning the rare earth element and uranium mining project at Kuannersuit close to the city of Narsaq. This project was overseen by an Australian firm, in cooperation with China's Shenghe Resources, but it is now in abeyance. As well, the decision by the IA-led government to halt oil and gas surveys in Greenland has meant that the possibility of Chinese fossil fuel investment there has also faded. The only major extraction project left in Greenland involving a Chinese partner is the planned zinc mine at Citronen Fjord, but its timetable remains undecided, and even that project seems to pivoting toward the renewed American investment interest in Greenland. China's economic footprint in Greenland has shrunk considerably just over the past two years, which has reduced the possibility of Beijing assuming a greater say over Greenland's economic affairs in the near term.

US and NATO allies arm neo-Nazi units in Ukraine as foreign policy elites yearn for Afghan-style insurgency

Corporate US media and foreign policy hardliners want to create a new Afghanistan in the middle of Europe by flooding Ukraine with weapons. The arms industry is very pleased.

Following urgent requests for arms from the Ukrainian government, at least 32 countries have announced their intention to ship billions of dollars in weapons into Ukraine for use against Russian forces in Ukraine. Photographic evidence shows that these weapons have already ended up in the hands of neo-Nazi paramilitaries - units which have already received training and arms the US and its NATO allies.

Underscoring the careless nature of the unprecedented arms shipments, the formerly neutral country of Norway has warned that its government cannot "guarantee that the weapons [it is sending to Ukraine] will not fall into the wrong hands."

Zelensky suggests Ukraine's Western backers lack courage

Ukraine's president says NATO members won't send him warplanes because they don't have 1% of the bravery shown by Mariupol defenders.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has scolded NATO members for declining to send him warplanes with which to help fight off Russia's military, essentially saying his Western supporters lack sufficient courage.

Speaking by video address early on Sunday from Kiev, Zelensky chided his allies for a "ping-pong about who and how should hand over jets and other defensive weapons," adding, "Ukraine can't shoot down Russian missiles with shotguns, machine guns, of which there are too many in the supplies." For instance, he said, to break the Russian siege of Mariupol, Ukraine needs tanks, other armored vehicles, and especially warplanes.

Why US LNG cannot replace Europe's reliance on Russian gas

LNG terminal
© Wikimedia CommonsLNG Terminal
The United States and European Union on Friday announced a new partnership to reduce the continent's reliance on Russian energy, the start of a years-long initiative to further isolate Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine.

As part of the plan, the U.S. and other nations will increase liquified natural gas exports to Europe by 15 billion cubic meters this year, the White House said. Even larger shipments would be delivered in the future.

At the same time, they will try to keep their climate goals on track by powering gas infrastructure with clean energy and reducing methane leaks that can worsen global warming.

Comment: If green 'clean energy' were an option, they wouldn't need to ship US LNG.

Comment: Quartz reports:
US LNG exports are maxed out

Global LNG demand was already surging prior to the Ukraine conflict as countries everywhere seek to lower than reliance on coal.

US exporters have been racing to bring more shipping terminals online for the last few years, and in December 2021 finally surpassed Qatar and Australia as the world's top LNG exporter.

In February, US LNG exports hit a record of 13.3 billion cubic feet per day, the first time that all seven US terminals were fully docked by tankers at once. Once the most recently completed new terminal, Calcasieu Pass in Louisiana, is fully operational by the end of this year, total US export capacity will be 13.9 bcf/d.

It takes years to build new LNG export infrastructure, so it's not clear how the US can meet its near-term promise to Europe other than talking Asian customers like China and Japan into reselling some of their American LNG to Europe.

So US LNG cannot yet replace Russian gas for Europe. Whilst over in Asia, customers will opt for the most affordable and reliable source, and with new Russian pipelines to Asia in the works, and the West's criminality clear for all to see, it's unlikely that the US will be their preferred supplier: Pepe Escobar: Exit Nord Stream 2, enter Power of Siberia 2

Longer-term, European buyers are already signing advance contracts for US LNG that won't be delivered until 2025 or later. Europe will also need to expand its import terminal infrastructure.

The West has become notorious for projects overrunning, being massively over budget, and sometimes even failing to ever be completed, and so the signing of these contracts is, for now, merely performative.

No matter what happens in the coming weeks in the Ukraine conflict, Europe is preparing to make its shift away from Russian gas permanent.

Macron warns against 'escalation' after Biden brands Putin 'butcher'

France's President Emmanuel Macron warned Sunday against a verbal "escalation" of Russia's invasion in Ukraine, after US President Joe Biden branded Vladimir Putin a "butcher" who "cannot remain in power".

The Kremlin had reacted in fury over Biden's comments which it said narrows the window for bilateral relations, with Russia's invasion of Ukraine now into a second month.

Macron said he would speak to Putin in the next two days to organise the evacuation of civilians from the heavily bombarded port city of Mariupol.

Comment: Turkey apparently is also warning of 'burning bridges' with Russia:
Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin warned against isolating Moscow, stating that Russia "must be heard one way or another." The official made the remarks on Sunday, during the opening session of the Doha Forum.

"If everybody burns bridges with Russia, then who's going to talk to them, at the end of the day?" Kalin asked.

At the same time, he urged international leaders to support Ukraine "by every means possible" so it can "defend" itself against the ongoing Russian offensive launched in late February. The Russian position must nonetheless be taken into consideration, he stressed.

"The Russian case must be heard, one way or the other," Kalin stated.

NATO member Turkey has been striving to take a neutral stance in the ongoing conflict, and is purportedly seeking to act as a mediator between Moscow and Kiev. Unlike other members of the US-led bloc, Ankara has refused to impose economic sanctions against Russia and has kept open its diplomatic channels with both sides.
