Best of the Web: Will Biden gamble on a Ukraine 'coalition of the willing'?

The Washington establishment is considering a risky and ill-defined intervention in Europe.

When Napoleon Bonaparte began his 1812 campaign to conquer Russia, he led the largest "coalition of the willing" in history. In addition to its French core, Bonaparte's army of more than 400,000 consisted of Italian, Dutch, German, and Polish soldiers. They were at best unenthusiastic. Frankly, other than the French, only Napoleon's Polish allies were truly eager to march on Moscow.

By the time Bonaparte's multinational force reached Moscow, paralyzing cold, ruinous battles, exhaustion, disease, and poor logistical planning reduced the original invasion force to less than half of its original strength. It was not long before Prussia and its North German allies defected to the Russians while the remainder (minus the Poles) deserted or died on the march home.

The military-industrial media complex strikes again

NATO

Tens of thousands protested against the skyrocketing cost of living and against Macron in France October 16, led by left-wing politician Jean Luc Melenchon, but there were few front page or top-of-the hour headlines in the U.S. Huge protests occurred in Rome the same day to demand an end to Italy's involvement in NATO, but no coverage on the west side of the Atlantic. Thousands protesting in Paris October 22 against NATO, but little notice in North America. Massive protests against NATO and inflation due to sanctions on Russian energy in France, Germany and Austria in September, but little news of it here in the heart of the empire.

German police beat citizens protesting energy shortages and record-high inflation, both due to Russia sanctions, the week of October 17, but that was not covered in the USA. Seventy thousand Czechs protested in Prague September 3 against NATO involvement in Ukraine, demanding gas from Russia (before some mysterious imperial somebody with means and motive blew up Nordstream 1 and 2, probably to nip the political effects of those protests in the bud) and ending the war, but that got little coverage in U.S. corporate media.

Ever get the sense there are things our media hides from us? Hmm. Ever wonder why enormous protests against the policies of the Exceptional Empire and its attack dog, NATO, seem, um, to be downplayed? Ever think our corporate news outlets behave more like the propaganda arm of our neoconservative state department and military than a free press? Well, if so, you may be onto something.

Best of the Web: Leaked documents reveal British spies constructing secret terror army in Ukraine

leaked documents british terror group ukraine

Documents obtained by The Grayzone reveal plans by a cell of British military-intelligence figures to organize and train a covert Ukrainian "partisan" army with explicit instructions to attack Russian targets in Crimea.

On October 28th, a Ukrainian drone attack damaged the Russian Black Sea fleet's flagship vessel in the Crimean port of Sevastopol. Moscow immediately blamed Britain for assisting and orchestrating the strike, as well as blowing up the Nord Stream pipelines - the worst acts of industrial sabotage in recent memory.

The British Ministry of Defense issued a blustery denial in response, branding the accusations "false claims of an epic scale." Whoever was behind those specific attacks, suspicions of a British hidden hand in the destruction are not unfounded. The Grayzone has obtained leaked documents detailing British military-intelligence operatives inking an agreement with the Security Service of Ukraine's Odessa branch, to create and train a secret Ukrainian partisan terror army.

Ukraine 'won't get a penny' if Republicans win Congress - Marjorie Taylor Greene

Voices in Kiev dismissed Marjorie Taylor Greene's promise, arguing she does not represent her party's mainstream.

If Republicans win back Congress in next week's midterm elections, "not another penny will go to Ukraine," US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene told a rally in Sioux City, Iowa on Thursday, accusing the ruling Democratic Party of prioritizing the Ukrainian military over the lives of Americans.

"The only border they care about is Ukraine, not America's southern border," Greene declared. "Our country comes first."

Chart Bar

The one chart that explains everything

US in relative decline
Look at the chart above. The chart explains everything.

It explains why Washington is so worried about China's explosive growth. It explains why the US continues to hector China on the issues of Taiwan and the South China Sea. It explains why Washington sends congressional delegations to Taiwan in defiance of Beijing's explicit requests. It explains why the Pentagon continues to send US warships through the Taiwan Strait and ship massive amounts of lethal weaponry to Taipei. It explains why Washington is creating anti-China coalitions in Asia that are aimed at encircling and provoking Beijing. It explains why the Biden administration is stepping up its trade war on China, imposing onerous economic sanctions on its businesses, and banning critical high-tech semi-conductors that are "are essential not just... for virtually every aspect of modern society, from electronic products and transport to the design and production of all manner of goods." It explains why China has been singled-out in the US National Security Strategy (NSS) as "the only competitor with both the intent and, increasingly, the capability to reshape the international order." It explains why Washington now regards China as its biggest and most formidable strategic adversary that must be isolated, demonized and defeated.

Comment: While the hypothesis above does help form the larger picture, it is clear that its been Russia that has counteracted US malevolence in Syria, the Ukraine and elsewhere, the most; and it is Russia that has been the most outspoken and the most articulate in calling out US martial and political aggression - as well as cultural and societal subversion - world-wide.

King Charles & David Attenborough parrot WWF activist nonsense they naively accept as 'science'

King Charles & David Attenborough
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was created in 1961 to raise funds for wildlife conservation and immediately recruited European royalty to help attract wealthy benefactors. At first it was a novel good cause and this is why Britain's royal family, plus their close friend David Attenborough, have been loyal supporters for six decades. However, for more than twenty years, the WWF has not been the benevolent conservation organization that it was in the 1960s yet these powerful men support them with more vigor than ever.

Prince Philip was the first president of the WWF-UK but ended his association with the group when they morphed into a politicized activist organization lobbying for the limitation of fossil fuels to curb human-caused global warming. However, Prince Charles, now King Charles III, became even more involved in WWF propaganda machine and eventually initiated son William, now heir apparent, into doing the same.

When the WWF began falsely promoting itself as a scientific authority a dozen or so years ago, these naive elite boosters accepted it without question, parroting unsubstantiated WWF climate doomsday talking points at every opportunity. These men don't speak with an authority of their own knowledge on this topic: they use their exalted positions to assist the WWF and others achieve their utopian dream: destroy for others the capitalism that created their own wealth and power.

Comment: The above would seem to be only a part of the support Charles has given to the larger agenda of the WEF's 'Great Reset':

Russia had accused Kiev of working on a "dirty bomb"

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) claimed on Thursday that its inspectors found no "undeclared" nuclear materials or activities after visiting three Ukrainian research facilities. Kiev immediately announced that this was proof Russian claims about a potential Ukrainian "dirty bomb" plot were unfounded.

Inspectors dispatched "at the request of the Government of Ukraine," traveled to the Institute for Nuclear Research in Kiev, the Eastern Mining and Processing Plant in Zhovti Vody, and the Pivdenmash factory in Dnieper, the IAEA said in a statement.
"Our technical and scientific evaluation of the results we have so far did not show any sign of undeclared nuclear activities and materials at these three locations," said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

'New centers of power are emerging in a multipolar world, we want to partner with them' - Chancellor Scholz writes in Politico before Beijing trip

Scholz Xi Jinping
© PATRIK STOLLARZ/AFP via Getty ImagesGerman Chancellor Olaf Scholz will be the first G7 leader to visit China since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic when he flies to Beijing to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping
Olaf Scholz is the chancellor of Germany.

It's been a good three years since my predecessor last visited China. Three years during which the challenges and risks that we face have increased — here in Europe, in East Asia and, of course, also in Sino-German relations. Three years during which the world has fundamentally changed — due to the COVID-19 pandemic on the one hand, and Russia's war against Ukraine on the other, with its severe repercussions for the international order, our food and energy supply, the economy and prices worldwide.

Meetings such as this weren't possible for a long time because of the pandemic and Beijing's strict measures to contain it. Direct conversation is, thus, all the more important now. And it is precisely because "business as usual" is no longer an option in these circumstances that I'm traveling to Beijing.

Comment: Germany better hope that enough of its mutual interests align in line with the rest of the multipolar world or, ultimately, it'll be left behind; as will any other vassals of the Western establishment.

Assassination attempt against Imran Khan exposes the establishment's dirty game

Imran Khan
Whichever of these three courses of action they choose to go through with, there's no denying that the strategic inertia is decisively against The Establishment's elite echelons, who already lost their Hybrid War/Fifth Generational War (5GW) against the Pakistani people. They can either go with the flow by finally allowing the masses to democratically choose their leader, or temporarily delay this inevitability by continuing to conspire against them or even literally risking a civil conflict by directly attacking them.
State-Sponsored Threats

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was ousted through a US-orchestrated post-modern coup in early spring as punishment for his independent foreign policy, narrowly survived an assassination attempt on Thursday. He was leading his promised Long March from Lahore to Islamabad along with thousands of his supporters to demand free and fair elections as early as possible. Prior to the former premier setting off, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah threatened to "hang him upside down."

Bulgaria to send military aid to Ukraine despite opposition

A majority of Bulgaria's lawmakers on Thursday approved sending the country's first military aid to Ukraine.

The National Assembly voted 175-49 with one abstention in favour of a proposal submitted by four nominally pro-EU parties.

The government now has one month to decide what kind of weapons Bulgaria can provide without affecting its own defence capabilities.

Bulgaria previously agreed to repair Ukrainian military equipment at its factories but refused to send weapons directly due to opposition from President Rumen Radev and the country's Moscow-friendly political parties.
