I used to think it was wrong for Israel to be killing tens of thousands of Gazans with airstrikes and starving hundreds of thousands with siege warfare, but then Israel apologists informed me that some Palestinians did mean things to Israelis in the past, so now I support it.

What Israel is doing in Gaza would only be unethical if everyone in Gaza were a perfect little cherub who'd never committed any violence or done anything wrong ever. I could see getting upset if the IDF was raining military explosives upon a giant concentration camp full of squishy marshmallow-like beings made of pure love and conceived without original sin who do nothing but coo and sing lullabies all day, but in reality the concentration camp is populated by beings who are not nearly that perfect.

Best of the Web: Record-cold weather in the stratosphere produces polar clouds earlier and further south than usual

Now we know why polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) have suddenly exploded. According to NASA's MERRA-2 climate model, temperatures in the Arctic stratosphere just hit a 40-year record low for the month of December:

Cold air in the stratosphere is exactly what PSCs require. Normally, the stratosphere has no clouds at all. But when the temperature drops to a staggeringly-low -85 C, widely-spaced water molecules coalesce into ice crystals and PSCs begin to form. Their aurora-like colors make them the most beautiful clouds on Earth.

PSCs are normally confined to the Arctic where the stratosphere is coldest. During this week's extreme cold wave, the clouds descended all the way to mid-latitudes. Here they are over Locarno,Switzerland (+46N):

Best of the Web: To the last Ukrainian: Kiev begins doomed conscription scheme that includes people with significant disabilities

Ukraine has been under martial law since February 24, 2022, and the next day President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on general mobilization. It is forbidden for men aged 18-60 to leave Ukraine during the period of martial law.

Comment: Many fled when they could, others have bribed their way out since, and those that are left have found ways to avoid being dragged to the front.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have said they do not know how to mobilize 500,000 more troops, as volunteers have "run out".

"The volunteers who wanted to join the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces have run out... To say exactly when mobilization will be and how qualitatively, it is difficult to say... how to implement it physically, there is no understanding," said Major General of Ukrainian forces Dmitry Marchenko in an interview with Deutsche Welle.

Comment: More details on the new parametres, as well as footage of the new enforcement in action:

To the last Ukrainian:

People with "amputated limbs, practical blindness, absence of one lung or eye and bilateral deafness" can be conscripted into military based on draft of new law on mobilization.

"The large draft law on mobilization exempts from military service on the basis of health status only in the presence of the first and second groups of disabilities.

The third group is not mentioned in the draft document, so they are automatically considered suitable. Assigning the third group of disabilities means quite serious health problems, in particular limb amputations.

Here are the main examples: absence of one lung or eye; practical blindness resulting from an occupational disease, occupational disability or military injury. One eye after a domestic injury or illness; bilateral deafness; paralysis or absence of a hand, paralysis of the upper or lower limbs; a significant defect of the bones of the skull, pulsation of the brain; the absence of a hand and a higher level of amputation of the upper limb; the absence of all phalanges of the four fingers of the hand, except for the first; absence of fingers on the hand, stump of the thigh or lower leg; congenital or acquired dislocation of the hip joints or one hip joint with significant functional impairment; complete thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid gland); artificial valve in the heart; absence of one kidney with pathology of the other; bilateral mastectomy (breast removal in women due to mammary gland diseases).

The draft law on mobilization, which is being prepared, provides for new duties for Ukrainians.

On December 21, MP Maryana Bezugla published on Facebook theses from the upcoming document, from which it follows that everyone is obliged to appear at the military commissariat to clarify personal data and undergo a medical examination.

There will no longer be a category of "limited suitability" for service."

Zelensky is in zugzwang when it comes to mobilization. Ukraine is unlikely to have a lot of big offensive potential lacking both the motivated troops and the necessary equipment in the quantity needed, however even to defend the country needs a lot more manpower.

Ukraine is currently tightening the mobilization laws. Which will lead to some unpleasant things. Many men will literally go into hiding, not showing up to work not to receive a draft notice as long as they're able to survive off their savings as long as possible or the money their wives, girlfriends or parents earn. In 2021 Ukraine's agricultural exports totaled over $27 billion, accounting for 41% of the country's overall exports.

This economy sector took a massive hit with this war. Many fields are covered with mines, Ukraine lost control of some rich agricultural areas, Kakhovka dam destruction, Ukraine not able to export as much it wants to with sea routes due to Russian blockade. Another important factor turned out to be the mobilization. Most of Ukrainian villages have been emptied out of military age men.

From conversations with people involved in agricultural business it's acknowledged that a lot of workers from rural areas have been mobilized, many have already been killed which will lead to shortage of workers in agricultural sector all across Ukraine. With villages and small towns already maxed out Ukraine will have to find a way to mobilize the planned 500,000 in big cities.

Looking to mobilize half a million men that have been trying to avoid exactly that for close to 2 year is by no means going to be easy task in itself. Then you will have to equip and train them. Those are two more problems even if he accept it as a fact that Ukraine will be able to mobilize them. Ukraine will need the resources and to find a way to train them under the threat of Russian strikes on potential training grounds.

Again we're talking about the need to forcibly draft 500,000 people in already limited mobilization pool of Ukraine. The men that didn't sign up on their own to join the army since February, 2022. Trying to take out 500,000 more men out of the already struggling economy to mobilize them into the army, plus the men that will try to hide from mobilization will certainly become a major problem for Ukraine next year.

This is one big crisis in the making.Combine that with the uncertainties when it comes to military and financial aid in upcoming year and there is a situation where Ukraine is going to be under a lot of pressure from various angles, not just by the Russian military on the front line slowly grinding its way forward.

Best of the Web: Covert sanctions? Israeli high-tech factories have difficulties importing components from China

Importers say that the Chinese recently started raising bureaucratic obstacles for shipments to Israel of components that can be used for both civilian and military purposes; Government official: 'It is clear that there is a connection to the war'.

Since the war, electronics and high-tech factories in Israel have been facing difficulties importing electronic components from China. These components are essential for both civilian and military purposes.

Importers argue that Chinese suppliers did not declare or announce any sanctions on Israel, but in reality, there seems to be a kind of bureaucratic obstacle. Chinese suppliers have begun demanding the completion of numerous forms, causing shipment delays due to inaccurately filled-out paperwork. The result is challenges in receiving the necessary supplies.

Comment: It would seem China is making a declaration without actually declaring anything.

Best of the Web: Israel assassinates top Iranian military general in Syria, Tehran warns Tel Aviv 'will pay' for its 'terrorism'

Seyyed Razi Mousavi
Senior military advisor of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Seyyed Razi Mousavi
Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi says the Israeli regime will definitely pay the price for its criminal act of killing a senior military advisor of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in Syria.

In a message on Monday, Raeisi said the vicious act of assassinating the IRGC military advisor in a missile attack in Syria was yet another sign of the usurping Zionist regime's desperation.

Seyyed Razi Mousavi, who was serving as a military advisor in Syria, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Sayyeda Zeinab neighborhood of the Syrian capital of Damascus earlier on Monday.

Comment: More from PressTV on this assassination:

Rumor this Christmas Night is that a major power outage has occurred in most of Israel, and a follow-up rumor is that it was caused by a 'cyber-attack', presumably Iranian in origin.

Best of the Web: The Sun never sets: Secrecy shrouds British military actions in Lebanon

UK soldiers
The UK, perpetually dissatisfied with its status as a former imperial power, seeks to play an oversized role in Israel's protection by setting its military and intel sights on Lebanon, Gaza, and Yemen today.

On 8 October, veteran British reporter Robert Peston published a remarkable post on the social media platform X. Citing insider information from "government and intelligence sources," Peston asserted that the Palestinian resistance operation Al-Aqsa Flood would inevitably evolve into a full-blown regional war, one that will be "as destabilizing to global security as Putin's attack on Ukraine." The journalist forewarned:
"We are in the early stages of a conflict with ramifications for much of the world."
What makes this revelation even more astonishing is the speed at which British intelligence gained certainty about imminent upheaval in West Asia, just over 24 hours after the unprecedented strike by Palestinian freedom fighters on Israel.

The urgency to prepare western audiences for the impending crisis hints at a deeper narrative — that London may have had a hand in igniting conflict across the region, a macabre plan that has been unfolding ever since.

Moscow shared vital intelligence with Belgrade, according to Prime Minister Ana Brnabiс.

Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabiс has expressed gratitude to the Russian security services, which alerted Belgrade to plans for riots in the capital.

Pro-Western demonstrators attempted to break into government buildings in Belgrade on Sunday evening, in what Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic called an attempted color revolution. While Vucic initially thanked unnamed "foreign services" for letting his security services "know exactly what the thugs were preparing," Brnabiс later revealed that Belgrade was tipped off by Moscow.
"I feel that it is important, especially tonight, to stand up for Serbia and to thank the Russian security services who had that information and who shared it with us," Brnabic told TV Pink on Sunday night.

Best of the Web: Ukraine proxy war "didn't work, Russia is NOT on its knees, West prevented TWO chances for peace" - Slovakia's PM Fico

Comment: Rough transcription and editing by SOTT:
There were 2 chances to achieve peace soon after the conflict in Ukraine began, but the statesman and other adventurers from the West prevented Ukraine signing the first one with the Russians.

Since the prevailing belief was that if you give the Ukrainians weapons and money, the Russians will be on their knees, be powerless and destroyed.

This strategy didn't work. Russia is not on its knees.

It is clear that Russia will set the pace in the future negotiations.

And i know everyone doesn't like to hear this, but the real truth needs to be acknowledged.

The West is convinced that we must fight until the last Ukrainian, and it's convinced that this should weaken the Russian Federation internationally and economically, but this didn't work, and Orban, and probably one or two other prime ministers are saying the same thing: that we need to change this, force [Ukraine] to agree to peace talks.

Best of the Web: Israel lied about 'Hamas Command center' under al-Shifa Hospital

An investigation by The Washington Post found that Israeli evidence attempting to justify its attack on al-Shifa Hospital holds little water.

Last month, the world watched as a spectacle rarely seen in modern warfare unfolded in Gaza. The Israeli military tore through al-Shifa Hospital, the Gaza Strip's main hospital, forcing the evacuation of patients and refugees as part of a siege on the medical complex that resulted in dozens of patient deaths and an untold number of additional casualties.

Israel's months-long assault on Gaza has already resulted in more than 20,000 Palestinian deaths since Oct. 7, many of them civilians and children. Even in a conflict as brutal as the one currently unfolding in Gaza, an organized military operation against a hospital is virtually unheard of. Israel for weeks had made public its preemptive justification for an incursion into a medical establishment that is typically protected under humanitarian law — asserting that al-Shifa contained a Hamas command center within a network of tunnels and secret rooms that used patients and doctors as human shields against Israeli military action.

The Biden administration continues to back Israel's position on the matter, and earlier this week reasserted their own claims of possessing "evidence that Hamas was operating underneath al-Shifa Hospital before Israel attacked." On Monday, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters in a press briefing:
"The U.S. remains 'confident' that "Hamas was using al-Shifa as a command and control post, as it uses other civilian sites to hide terrorist infrastructure, to hide weapons, to hide fighters and ultimately to use civilians as human shields."

Best of the Web: Netanyahu wanted to 'collapse' Hamas. This war could collapse Israel

The Gaza war has been a huge miscalculation for Israel. As well as being a moral and military disaster, it is fuelling resistance and reigniting the embers of anger across the Arab world
Netanyahu

After a particularly heavy Israeli barrage during the siege of Beirut in July 1982, US President Ronald Reagan called Menachem Begin, the Israeli prime minister, to demand the shelling be stopped.

"Here on our television night after night our people are being shown the symbols of this war and it is a holocaust," Reagan said.

Unlike the Democrat in the White House today, a Republican US president was able and prepared to back his words with action. The US halted cluster munitions and the sale of F16s to Israel.

Reported casualty figures of the war in Lebanon vary wildly. According to Lebanese estimates, 18,085 Lebanese and Palestinians were killed in the four months after the invasion was launched. The PLO's figures were: 49,600 civilians killed or wounded.

In just two months, Israel has killed as many people but inflicted a far higher level of destruction in Gaza.

According to military analysts interviewed by the Financial Times, Israel's devastation of northern Gaza, where 68 percent of the buildings had been destroyed by 4 December, is up there with the allied bombing of Hamburg (75 percent), Cologne (61 percent), and Dresden (59 percent). This is what happened to these cities after two years of bombing.
