Best of the Web: 'Major escalation': Israel bombs densely populated area of Beirut, Hezbollah says commander survived the attack

beirut israel

In a major escalation towards regional war, Israel today bombed one of the most densely populated areas in Beirut. The Israeli military claims to have targeted a senior Hezbollah commander, who in fact survived the attack. Israeli forces have claimed that this commander was responsible for the attack on Majdal Shams, in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights on Saturday, July 27.

Comment: Except that Hezbollah have refuted the claim, and they aren't known for lying about their retaliations, whilst Israel is. Hezbollah also has no reason to kill Druze people in what is Syrian territory. And, tellingly, when Israeli officials visited to 'pay their respects' they were shouted down by the locals.

The attack occurred almost immediately after Netanyahu had finished his US genocide tour, and after allegedly receiving pledges of support from US officials to escalate the Greater Israel war. Netanyahu used this incident as his excuse to leave the US earlier than scheduled: Israel's FM claims 'moment of an all-out war' with Hezbollah approaching

Following this attack, Israeli officials had released numerous threats against Hezbollah, who they blamed for the Majdal Shams strike, which killed at least 12 people, including 9 children and one teenager. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Israel will "not let [the attack] pass in silence." Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari threatened, "We will prepare for a response against Hezbollah, we will act."

Comment: Around the same time as the above, an explosion was reported at an Iraqi base for 'Iran-aligned' security forces base:
Blasts at Iraq PMF security agency base south of Baghdad kill 4 members, sources say

Blasts on Tuesday inside a base south of Baghdad used by Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) killed four members of the official state security agency containing several Iran-aligned armed groups, and wounded four others, police and medical sources told Reuters.

The initial death toll was one, but two others who were critically injured in the blasts later died and another body was retrieved from the location of the blasts, hospital sources and a local government official said.

The blasts came after multiple rockets were launched at Iraq's Ain al-Asad airbase housing U.S.-led forces late on Thursday, U.S. and Iraqi sources said, with no damage or casualties reported.

In a statement issued following the blasts, PMF made no accusation, saying it was unidentified explosion.

Another PMF statement issued later said rockets fired by drones targeted two patrols for the PMF forces in town of Jurf al-Sakhar just south of Baghdad.

An Iraqi military official said the cause of the blast remained unclear and authorities will start investigating the incident.

Two Iraqi PMF local commanders accused the U.S. of carrying out airstrikes that targeted the PMF base. There was no immediate response from the U.S. military.

Ambulances rushed to the area where the camp is located, 50 km (30 miles) south of Baghdad, said witnesses.

Iraq, a rare ally of both Tehran and Washington which hosts 2,500 U.S. troops and has Iran-backed militias linked to its security forces, has witnessed escalating tit-for-tat attacks since the Israel-Hamas war erupted in October.

Best of the Web: US escalates drive for regime change in Venezuela; military pledges allegiance to Maduro

Venezuela miltary
© cneesvzlaVenezuelan troops carry ballot boxes in ceremony ahead of the Presidential elections, July 24
The electoral body blamed a cyberattack for delays but said it counted 80 percent of the votes and that these show Maduro's victory to be "irreversible." As of this writing, the CNE website is still down, and no further results have been published.

As expected, the Biden administration, its puppet regimes in the region, and the US-funded Unitary Platform have refused to acknowledge the results. In a response clearly coordinated beforehand, US imperialism is instead using the elections to escalate its efforts for regime change.

Washington has repeatedly employed failed attempts to kidnap and kill the Venezuelan leadership, brutal sanctions to starve the population into submission and threats of a military invasion — all aimed at pressuring sections of the Venezuelan military and ruling circles to oust the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

Comment: More up to date developments include the typical regime change nonsense, such as knocking down statues, arson, with some of the stooges being caught; alongside pro-Maduro and democracy protests; and a military declaration in support of Maduro:

Regarding the escalation, Laura Knight-Jadcyzk writes :

Anybody who supports the US attempted coup in Venezuela also supports the Deep State which is provably the enemy of Donald Trump and the American people as well as many peoples all over the world. The United States has a long history of overthrowing foreign governments. Here's a short list:

1. Hawaii (1893): A group of American sugar planters and businessmen, supported by U.S. military forces, overthrew Queen Liliʻuokalani, leading to the annexation of Hawaii by the United States in 1898.

2. Cuba (1898): The U.S. intervened in the Cuban War of Independence against Spain, leading to the Spanish-American War. Following Spain's defeat, the U.S. occupied Cuba and established a protectorate, influencing Cuban politics for decades.

3. Philippines (1898): After defeating Spain, the U.S. took control of the Philippines, leading to the Philippine-American War. The U.S. suppressed a Filipino independence movement, establishing control over the islands.

4. Guatemala (1954): The CIA orchestrated a coup to overthrow President Jacobo Árbenz, who had initiated land reforms affecting the interests of the United Fruit Company. This intervention plunged Guatemala into a prolonged civil war.

5. Iran (1953): The CIA and British intelligence services organized a coup to overthrow Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh after he nationalized the oil industry. The coup restored the Shah to power, leading to decades of authoritarian rule.

6. Chile (1973): The U.S. supported a military coup that overthrew President Salvador Allende, who had pursued socialist policies. General Augusto Pinochet's subsequent dictatorship was marked by widespread human rights abuses.

7. Vietnam (1963): The U.S. supported the coup against South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem, who was seen as an obstacle to American military objectives in the region. His assassination led to the Vietnam War.

8. Panama (1989): The U.S. invaded Panama to depose General Manuel Noriega, who had been involved in drug trafficking and had become increasingly uncooperative with U.S. policies.

9. Afghanistan (2001): Following the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. led a coalition to overthrow the Taliban regime, which had harbored al-Qaeda terrorists. This intervention initiated a prolonged conflict in the region. And, at the end, Afghanistan was returned to the Taliban along with millions of dollars of US equipment.

10. Iraq (2003): The U.S. invaded Iraq, toppling Saddam Hussein's regime under the pretext of eliminating weapons of mass destruction, which were never found. The invasion led to long-term instability in the region and killed well over a million Iraqis.

11. Libya (2011): During the Arab Spring, the U.S. and NATO allies launched a military intervention in Libya to support rebels against Muammar Gaddafi's regime. The intervention led to Gaddafi's overthrow and death, but also resulted in ongoing civil war and instability in Libya which is ongoing.

12. Ukraine (2014): The U.S. supported the Euromaidan protests that led to the ousting of President Viktor Yanukovych. This intervention was part of a broader geopolitical struggle between the West and Russia, contributing to the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine and the deaths of probably a million Ukrainians.

These interventions reflect a pattern of U.S. foreign policy driven by greed hidden under a combination of shields that include strategic interests, economic motives, and ideological goals. Note that these interventions have significant and lasting consequences for the affected countries and their populations.

Now, specifically regarding Venezuela, the reader should consult the work of Anya Parampil Journalist @TheGrayzoneNews and author of "Corporate Coup: Venezuela and the End of US Empire."

She wrote the following on X yesterday:

Don't turn off your critical thinking skills just because you have been told Venezuela is "socialist" your whole life. The Venezuelan opposition have claimed fraud and contested virtually every election that they have lost since Chávez came to power. Yet they can never provide evidence, and that is because Venezuela's electoral process is far more secure than what we have in the United States. I describe the voting process in the country, which I have observed firsthand, in my book, Corporate Coup:

"In Venezuela, voting machines were activated through a two-step verification process consisting of a physical check of the voter's national identity card and a digital scan of their fingerprint. After casting their vote, the voter received a physical receipt of their ballot which they then personally dropped in a secure box on site. The voter then signed their name and stamped their thumbprint on a physical electoral registry to certify their participation. When polls closed, authorities assuaged fears of digital vote tampering by checking their final electronic tally against a random sampling of 54 percent of the physical ballot receipts submitted by voters at polling stations."
Citizen and international observers are present throughout this process. Do not fall for claims of fraud unless hard evidence is produced. Especially because further escalation in Venezuela will only result in civil conflict and perhaps even regional war in the Western hemisphere. You think our border looks bad now? Wait until Washington turns up the heat on Caracas. Oh — and the Russian military has strong military ties with Venezuela and a presence within the country. We are not only talking about regional war here, but an expansion of the World War currently raging against Russia and its allied rising powers. Are you ready for that war to hit "Washington's backyard"?

One more point: the vast majority of Venezuela's economy — hotels, restaurants, stores — are privately owned and operated. Venezuela's "socialism" is largely defined by the fact its industries, including its oil sector and precious mineral reserves, are nationally operated. This makes Venezuela comparable to Russia and many other modern states that consider the natural resources stored within the nation to be the property of the Republic rather than a few at the top. Venezuela is an obsession in Washington because before Chávez, US and European companies practically owned the country and the IMF set its domestic economic agenda. Venezuela is home to the largest oil and untapped gold reserves in the world. This is why Americans have been inundated with propaganda about Venezuela since it began the process of asserting sovereign ownership over that natural wealth. That is what their "socialism" is primarily about.

You can, on the other hand, listen to the shills for the Deep State such as Anthony Blinken and Elon Musk. Up to you.

For those intrigued by the covert operations of the CIA and its impact on global politics, L. Fletcher Prouty's "The Secret Team" is a must-read. As a staunch critic of the CIA, Prouty unveils the agency's unchecked influence on international affairs, often operating beyond the oversight of U.S. Congress and government. His works provide a deep dive into the CIA's origins, the Cold War's inception, the infamous U-2 incident, the Vietnam War, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Prouty boldly claimed that JFK's assassination was a coup d'état orchestrated by a secretive global "power elite" determined to protect its interests by any means necessary, even at the expense of democracy. According to Prouty, elements within the U.S. intelligence and military communities conspired to eliminate Kennedy to prevent him from reining in the CIA following the Bay of Pigs fiasco. He pointed to Edward Lansdale, whom he referred to as "General Y" in Oliver Stone's film JFK, as a key orchestrator, even identifying Lansdale in photographs of the so-called "three tramps."

In "The Secret Team," Prouty presents a provocative alternative account of the 1960 U-2 incident, suggesting that anti-communist factions within the U.S. government sabotaged the flight, leading to its downing by Soviet forces. He argued that this was a deliberate ploy to derail the improving U.S.-Soviet relations and scuttle the promising Four Power Paris Summit between Khrushchev and Eisenhower. The fallout from this incident, Prouty contended, was instrumental in collapsing the summit and exacerbating Cold War tensions.

Prouty's work is a compelling exploration of hidden power structures and their far-reaching implications, making it essential reading for anyone interested in the shadowy side of international relations.

Best of the Web: 17-year-old kills 3 children in frenzied knife attack at family centre in Southport, UK - 6 more wounded

southport stabbing
Aerial view from the scene on Hart Street
North West Ambulance Service said at least eight people were stabbed and taken to hospital, some to Alder Hey Children's Hospital. The attack is not currently being treated as terror-related.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested after stabbings in Southport.

At least eight people have been taken to hospital after a "major incident" was declared by Merseyside Police after officers attended reports of stabbings on Hart Street in the seaside town, which is north of Liverpool, just before midday on Monday.

It is believed the attack happened at The Hart Space - a community hub and mother and baby centre on the road.

Comment: This is just the latest seemingly random, particularly violent incident to occur in the UK in recent weeks. However, as has become increasingly frequent in recent years, not only do these appear to occur in clusters within one country, but they can often be found to occur across multiple countries, as seems to be the case now.

Whilst divisory media outlets and personalities would have us believe this is solely an issue of weaponised mass migration, a more discerning view might be that, instead, those people who are vulnerable, and volatile - of which illegal migrants indeed are included - are more liable to go off in the current climate.

These incidents are also occurring alongside a spate of other unusual and 'unprecedented' events, and it seems reasonable to suppose that if they're not directly related, then they're perhaps a symptom of a general malaise.

Note the following is just selection of incidents are just from the last few weeks: As noted in the X post below, there were other incidents in the UK, not linked to above. However, what the user fails to mention is that the attack at the airport also involved a white, British police officer kicking and stamping on the head of one of the restrained and prostrate British-Muslim offenders.

As for the riots mentioned, the Gypsy and Bangladeshi community has been in the area for half a century, if not more, and an escalation to such rioting is rare, if unheard of.

Further, not noted in the post, over in Dublin, a protest against a migrant encampment became particularly intense, and those involved in the righteous furor were white citizens.

And so whilst weaponised mass migration is indeed a serious threat - it's weaponised - to reduce what's occurring down to solely a migrant problem would be to miss the much more significant picture: that powerful groups are involved in an overall strategy of impoverishment; divide and conquer; and chaos creation; of which mass migration is but one method of attack.

Best of the Web: CIA denies grooming Thomas Crooks to assassinate Trump

crooks lanza
"My name is Legion, for we are many"
Was the attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump earlier this month part of a secret CIA program involving brainwashed killers? That's the claim being made by some far-right accounts on X, but the U.S. intelligence agency is taking the unusual step of directly and forcefully denying the claims.

When it was revealed in the 1970s that the CIA had tried to develop a mind-manipulation program called MKUltra, it sounded like the most absurd conspiracy theory around. Unfortunately, it turned out to be true, even if the suggestive results of the program - and potential for creating Manchurian Candidate-like killers - have been exaggerated in the subsequent decades.

But MKUltra has become quite a meme in the 2020s, with many conspiracy theorists jumping into the fray after Trump was shot at by a 20-year-old during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13. The shooter was identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks who acted alone.

Comment: ...according to the CIA's sister agency, the FBI...

But some people on social media are trying to claim Crooks was somehow trained by the CIA under an MKUltra program to go after Trump.

Comment: That last line is a CLASSIC SYMPTOM of a 'programmed patsy': there's no motive because they HAVE NO PERSONAL MOTIVE. Their 'will' is taken over by someone else's, namely the patsy's agency handlers.

Ah, journalists.

Comment: The Paris 2024 Olympics: a celebration of thousands of years of tradition, talent, and peak human fitness?

Sports spectacles like the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the Commonwealth Games and a host of other events have become increasingly political in their messaging and their pageantry in recent years. Furthermore, the symbology on display during these performances has become more and more bizarre.

As we noted in May, the signs were not good for the Summer Games when it was revealed that drag queens and trans activists would be carrying the Olympic Torch in preparation for opening ceremonies. Olympic torch bearers are supposed to be chosen from a list of people with significant contributions to their communities. It's hard to say what contributions trans activists have made to any community, but the announced "theme" of the Summer Games held in Paris helps to explain their presence.

The stated tenets for Olympics 2024 are: Community, Diversity and The Collective. In other words, the theme of this year's Olympic Games is woke.

Comment: Predictably, this performance is a subversion of those terms.

Comment: Contrast this with Russia's Olympic opener:

And which supports a previous statement from Putin (note from the subtitles that he didn't actually say "Satanic pedophiles", but it wasn't far off):

The ideological brainwashing (and occult ritual?) wasn't lost on Russia's troops, either:
Russian soldiers commenting on the Olympics: "Watching the Olympics in France, I realize it's time to leave this planet 🫤 The prospect of a third world war no longer seems so far-fetched. If it can help us stop this biblical apocalypse, then why not. The world has gone mad. We are truly one of the few remaining bastions of humanity, tradition, and light in this world that is quickly descending into chaos."

The apocalyptic references were rather blatant - a golden bull/calf, and a white horse:

According to X, 'satanic' is trending with 100k posts. And so it seems that some people are finally getting up to speed. This also may be why, rather unusually, a significant number of posts were censored by The Olympics Committee over copyright claims:

If you have any doubt what is going on at the Olympics opening ceremony A single rider on a pale horse is straight out of the book of Revelation

"And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth." Revelation 6:8

Maybe part of the reason for the copyright claims is because, once you (or too many people) see it, you can't unsee it:

Their Olympics PR team seem to be doing some damage control:

© Julien De Rosa/Getty ImagesFILE:
A bomb threat has reportedly led to the evacuation of Gare du Nord, a major Paris train station, just minutes after a Franco-Swiss airport was closed due to security concerns. The entire station perimeter has been cordoned off amid the bomb scare.

Local journalist Jean-Baptiste Marty reported that "two suspicious packages" were found at the rail hub. It comes after lines were sabotaged ahead of the opening ceremony. Writing on X, he added, "A bomb threat is in progress at Gare du Nord in Paris. The entire perimeter around the station and within the station is cordoned off."

According to the French media outlet Actu17, two calls were made warning of bombs at the station. Meanwhile, Basel-Mulhouse airport, near the Swiss border, experienced a bomb scare, prompting an evacuation of travellers.

Initially, Basel-Mulhouse EuroAirport announced on its website, "For safety reasons, the terminal had to be evacuated and is currently closed." However, the airport has since reopened, and flights are gradually resuming.

Arson attacks paralyse French high-speed rail network hours before Olympics

High-speed rail services to Paris have been severely disrupted by what officials described as "criminal actions" and sabotage, hours before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

The incidents paralysed several high-speed lines linking the French capital to the rest of France and to neighbouring countries, according to transport minister Patrice Vergriete.

Speaking on BFM television, he described people fleeing from the scene of fires and the discovery of incendiary devices, adding: "Everything indicates that these are criminal fires."

As Paris authorities geared up for a parade along the Seine River amid tightened security for Paris 2024, three fires were reported near the tracks on the high-speed lines of Atlantique, Nord and Est.

The disruption particularly affected Paris's major Montparnasse station. Videos posted on social networks showed the hall of the station saturated with passengers.

The Paris police prefecture "concentrated its personnel in Parisian train stations" after the "massive attack" that paralysed the TGV high-speed network, Laurent Nunez, the city police chief, told France Info television.

Footage:

Travel to and from London beneath the English Channel, to neighbouring Belgium, and across the west, north, and east of France was affected by what the national rail company SNCF called a series of co-ordinated overnight incidents.

SNCF said areas affecting rail track intersections were intentionally targeted by the arsonists to double the impact.

"For one fire, two destinations were hit," said chief executive Jean-Pierre Farandou.

It was "a premeditated, calculated, co-ordinated attack" that indicates "a desire to seriously harm" the French people, he added.

Government officials denounced the acts, though they said there was no immediate sign of a direct link to the Olympics.

The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation, being led by the National Jurisdiction for the Fight against Organised Crime.

Passengers at St Pancras station in London were warned to expect delays of around an hour to their Eurostar journeys. Announcements in the departure hall at the international terminus informed travellers heading to Paris that there was a problem with overhead power supplies.

The attacks occurred against a backdrop of global tensions and heightened security measures as the city prepared for the Games. Many people were planning to converge on the capital for the opening ceremony, and many holidaymakers were also in transit.

SNCF said it did not know when traffic would resume and feared that disruption would continue "at least all weekend".

Valerie Pecresse, president of the regional council of the greater Paris region, said "250,000 travellers will be affected today on all these lines". Substitution plans are under way but she advised travellers "not to go to stations".
Times of Israel reports on the threat against the President:
French police said probing threat against Herzog ahead of Olympics opening ceremony

French police are investigating a person who threatened on social media to attack President Isaac Herzog at the Paris Olympics, French newspaper L'Équipe reported Friday.

According to the report, authorities were alerted to the threat via the French government's Pharos website, on which users can report illegal online content.

The threat was posted to X, formerly Twitter, from the Val-de-Marne region southeast of Paris, and is being investigated by the anti-terrorism unit of the regional police, the newspaper said.

In a briefing on Friday cited by the Ynet news site, Herzog said he "has a lot of trust in the security infrastructure of the French and of the other states there, and also on the Olympic Committee, which has made an enormous effort."

Herzog was preparing to participate in Friday's Olympics opening ceremony after attending a reception with French President Emmanuel Macron, where he thanked his French counterpart for the warm welcome.

"I appreciate your work in the fight against antisemitism and your contribution to ensuring the ability of the excellent Israeli delegation to compete with respect and fairness in the Olympic Games," Herzog told Macron, according to a statement from the president's office.

Concerns for the safety of the Israeli delegation and Israeli tourists have peaked in recent days.

On Thursday, a hacker group calling itself "Zeus" published the personal information of Israeli athletes, in an attack Israeli authorities believe to have been orchestrated by Iran.

Since Israel is known for its expertise in cyberwarfare, and Zionists have been caught out an unusual number of times faking hate crimes, in addition to such action conferring no benefit to Iran, it seems unlikely that Tehran had anything to do with it: Predatory Sparrow: The terrorist attacks of an Israel-linked hacker group

Note also how Israel seemed to be laying the groundwork even prior to today's developments: False flag anyone? Israel warns that 'Iranian terrorist proxies' plotting attack on Israelis at Olympics

On Wednesday, Herzog himself was ordered to stay on his plane for an extra 40 minutes after landing in Paris due to security concerns sparked by a suspicious figure on a nearby rooftop.

Antisemitic attacks have soared in France since the attack, and French police have made several arrests on terrorism charges in recent months.

Israel's 88 athletes' security detail comprises both French officers and Shin Bet agents.

A French diplomatic source told the Ynet news site that France's "intelligence and security services are working actively to locate the perpetrators of criminal acts and bring them to justice."

"At the same time, we are aware of the threats to Israeli athletes," said the source. "The French authorities, the delegations and the citizens of the state of Israel will receive the highest level of security coverage possible."

Hostage families' anger

Meanwhile, the relatives of hostages held in Gaza since Hamas's October 7 reacted angrily to comments President Isaac Herzog made to Israeli athletes on Thursday.

The president told the Israeli delegation in Paris that perhaps "somewhere out there in Gaza, it could be that one of the hostages will see you for a second, and you will give them strength... this year we want to see the flag of Israel in every arena everywhere in the world."

Einav Zangauker, whose son was kidnapped from his home on Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7 and is still held in Gaza, demanded Herzog take action to bring the hostages home rather than using them in a pep talk.

"Instead of going to warm the hearts of the athletes, I demand you do your job and take care of the return of the hostages via the deal on the table, which the prime minister continues to torpedo," Zangauker said.

"President Herzog, Matan's heart does not warm to see the president of the country normalizing the holding of hostages for the benefit of the Olympics, and the same goes for the women who are being sexually abused and all the other captives," she said.

Responding to the criticism, Herzog's office said Friday that the president's comments were taken out of context.

"The president was speaking about the mental strength of the athletes and the souls of the hostages who we can't forget for a moment — even on the world stage of the Olympics," read a statement from his office.

The president also reiterated the need to reach a deal to bring the hostages home as soon as possible, the statement added.
Considering the West-Israel's escalation of chaos creation on the geopolitical stage, this all seemed rather predictable. And there were incidents in the run up to the opening day which were similarly foreboding. It also seems likely that there will be more incidents of note before the games are over:

Israeli attacks have likely killed many more than the nearly 40,000 people reported, and even more will yet perish.

Earlier this month, the Lancet published an article estimating that the total number of Palestinian civilian deaths caused directly and indirectly by Israeli attacks since October 2023 could be nearly five times higher than the official death toll, and could reach "up to 186 000 or even more." It noted that "this would translate to 7.9% of the total population in the Gaza Strip."

According to the piece, the latest available count of Palestinians killed - 37,396 - is far too low, based on the fact that it is still unknown how many more lie under the rubble, how many are missing but not accounted for among the dead, and how many will perish due to starvation, dehydration, or diseases.
"Even if the conflict ends immediately, there will continue to be many indirect deaths in the coming months and years from causes such as reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable diseases."
However, even this Lancet estimate of nearly 200,000 dead might be only half the actual number of Palestinians killed, according to some counts.
