Best of the Web: Russo-Ukrainian War: Pentagon Leak Biopsy

Comment: Long story short, they're probably legit. Russia-Ukraine War analyst 'Big Serge' explains why he thinks so...

Another winter has ended, and spring has again arisen on the war in Ukraine. Amid the thaw and attendant mud, Russian forces - including the indominable Wagner Group - have pushed the Ukrainian grouping in Bakhmut to the brink, with the AFU now clinging its last defensive toehold in the city. Bakhmut has become the largest battle of the 21st century, and is now entering its climactic phase.

Nevertheless, battlefield developments have been upstaged to some extent by the apparent leak of classified US military intelligence documents which provide a sweeping view into the inner workings of the Pentagon's war.

I am not entirely clear on Substack's content policies as it relates to such documents. It is certainly too late for the US Government to contain the leak, as the images have by this point been shared, screenshotted, and downloaded countless times, but that does not preclude an attempt to limit its circulation via a whack-a-mole campaign of content deletion. In any case, desiring neither to violate US law nor run afoul of Substack's content rules, prudence dictates that I ought not embed the images directly in this post, but they are not hard to find - the "Rus Fleet" Telegram channel has them up at the moment, for example. Use your own discretion.

Comment: Some of the documents (which are actually photographs of physical documents):
pentagon documents leaks ukraine
So that's the content from these leaked documents which concerns US military support/analysis of the Ukrainian regime.

With the caveat that just because these docs may be 'legit', this doesn't mean their contents are reliably factual, there are also photographed documents of intelligence reports about the role of Western, active-duty, 'special forces' soldiers participating in the Russia-Ukraine War; details about internal South Korean government deliberations over whether to send weapons to Ukraine (which the US no doubt discovered via spying on its 'ally'); another report claiming that Israeli foreign intel outfit - 'the Mossad' - is supporting the protest movement in Israel against Netanyahu; and other documents implying that the US has inside sources in both the Wagner PMC and the Russian Ministry of Defence.

Spicy stuff!

No surprises there for Sott.net readers, but the 'optics' are bad for US narrative-makers and the US govt's ever-deteriorating relations with the whole world.

Best of the Web: Macron in China: 'Europe should reduce dependence on US dollar, seek strategic autonomy'

Xi/Mac
© Jacques Witt/AFPChinese President Xi Jinping • French President Emanuel Macron
As the United States combats a recent flood of countries 'de-dollarizing' - trading commodities in other currencies, the last thing that was needed was French President Emanuel Macron amplifying this message.

After spending around six hours with Chinese President Xi Jinping as part of a three-day state visit to China, Macron made extremely clear that France wants nothing to do with WWIII, emphasizing that Europe must employ "strategic autonomy," presumably led by France, to become a "third superpower," according to Politico.

While speaking with reporters aboard COTAM Unité, France's Air Force One, the French President said that the "great risk" facing Europe right now is that it "gets caught up in crises that are not ours, which prevents it from building its strategic autonomy."

This isn't the first time Macron has suggested reducing dependence on the US. In November, the French President called for a "single global order" while discussing the power interests of Russia and China and the threat of war.
"We are in a jungle and we have two big elephants trying to become more and more nervous. If they become very nervous and start a war, it will be a big problem for the rest of the jungle. You need the cooperation of a lot of other animals, tigers, monkeys and so on."

Comment: Of all Western leaders, Macron has the best grasp of what's going on geopolitically. He also spoke at a Chinese University, and was generally treated as a star in Beijing over the course of the full state visit. One wonders what else was said outside the formal 6-hour meeting with Xi.

So, did Macron only go to China as part of a Western reaction to Xi's visit to Moscow, in order to 'warn' China not to become involved in Ukraine', or was his talk of Europe becoming 'another pole' a hint that he and his French backers are embracing multipolarity?

By the way, the last French president to criticize US dollar dominance, and pull France out of NATO in 1965, was ousted in a 'colour revolution' of sorts. This makes us wonder whether the anti-Macron protests in France right now are being, at least in part, fueled from the US - like the Israeli protest movement against Netanyahu...

Flashback Best of the Web: Edward M. Kennedy address at the public memorial service for Robert F. Kennedy

Edward M. Kennedy Address at the Public Memorial Service for Robert F. Kennedy delivered 8 June 1968 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York

Your Eminences, Your Excellencies, Mr. President:

On behalf of Mrs. Kennedy, her children, the parents and sisters of Robert Kennedy, I want to express what we feel to those who mourn with us today in this Cathedral and around the world.

We loved him as a brother, and as a father, and as a son. From his parents, and from his older brothers and sisters -- Joe and Kathleen and Jack -- he received an inspiration which he passed on to all of us. He gave us strength in time of trouble, wisdom in time of uncertainty, and sharing in time of happiness. He will always be by our side.

Comment: This speech is applicable today as it was in 1968 when it was given; perhaps more so. In times of turbulence and great change, it is up to the moral courage of the individual to birth the new world, not just the great men remembered in the history books. If not you, then who?

The mid-March Moscow summit between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin was notable for being publicized in advance. Since the outbreak of the Syrian war, Assad's foreign visits have not been publicly revealed until after they have occurred. This small but significant detail suggests the Syrian president has a newfound confidence in the political and security conditions outside his national borders.

While the participants kept a tight lid on leaks, informed sources from both Moscow and Damascus disclosed to The Cradle that the Syrian and Russian presidents discussed the following issues:

Economic ties: With a focus on Syria's energy sector, Putin expressed Russia's readiness to invest in the production of electricity in the Levantine state, which post-conflict, suffers from a 75 percent deficit in production. Putin also expressed Moscow's willingness to help Syria meet its vital grain needs.

Best of the Web: ICC's Putin arrest warrant based on State Dept-funded report that debunked itself

CNN news

  • The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of the "unlawful deportation" of Ukrainian children to a network of camps inside Russia. The warrant was based on a report by the Yale HRL center, which is funded by the US State Department.
  • US journalist Jeremy Loffredo visited one of Russian government-sponsored camps in question. At The Donbas Express, located just outside of Moscow, Loffredo met youth from war-torn regions who were flourishing thanks to free music instruction, and grateful to be in a secure environment. This article features his exclusive video report.
  • A Grayzone review of the Yale HRL report found the paper's content contradicted many claims contained in the ICC warrant. It also undercut incendiary statements its director, Nathaniel Raymond, issued during media appearances.
  • In an interview with Loffredo, Yale HRL's Raymond further contradicted allegations he made in a CNN interview about a massive "hostage situation" underway in Russia, acknowledging that most of the camps he researched were "teddy bear"-like cultural programs. He also disclosed his collaboration with US intelligence.
On March 17, the Prosecutor General of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, introduced an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Commissioner for Children's Rights, Maria Llova-Belova. The warrant, which accused Putin and Lolva-Belova of conducting the "unlawful deportation" of Ukrainian children to a "network of camps" across the Russian Federation, inspired a wave of incendiary commentary in the West.

Best of the Web: Twitter's release of source code reveals US government can 'intervene' with recommendation algorithm

elon musk twitter
On Friday, Twitter released the recommendation algorithm portion of its code by publishing it on GitHub, where developers post open source software data. Developer Steven Tey dug into the code and found that there is a mechanism through which the US government can "intervene" with the code.

"When needed, the government can intervene with the Twitter algorithm," Tey wrote. "In fact, @TwitterEng (Twitter Engineering) even has a class for it - 'GovernmentRequested.'"

Tey linked directly to the code on GitHub.

On March 17, Musk announced he was going to make the algorithm open source later in the month and said, "Our 'algorithm' is overly complex & not fully understood internally. People will discover many silly things , but we'll patch issues as soon as they're found!"

Best of the Web: Forbidden Science

Forbidden Science
© Wkipedia
What still belongs to Science and what does not? Who is to decide what is science and what is para-science or pseudo-science? Some kinds of research are welcomed at one university, but not at another. There are respected scientists, some of whom are Nobel Prize winners, who are ostracized, most of the time by gossip, by various covert activities of their colleagues, simply because they dare to ask questions and research phenomena that others consider as "unworthy". I have already mentioned several such cases, one example being the treatment of the "strange interests" of Alfred Wallace by Encyclopedia Universalis.

Someone - we do not know who it was - decided that a major part of the research of a distinguished scientist should be suppressed - the public should not be told about it, that it is better to tell a lie than to tell an inconvenient truth.

Science in Secret?

A friend of mine, a distinguished French scientist, who is interested in many "esoteric" areas, tells me that one should keep these interests to oneself, otherwise one will be punished; covert actions of others will destroy your scientific career; and that is what he does - he will discuss certain things in private, but will never dare to say them in public. What kind of science forces scientists to work in secret, from fear? What kind of society gives birth to that kind of science?

William Crookes

While reading the remarkable autobiography of Alfred Wallace, Darwin's colleague, the co-discoverer - if not the original discoverer of the mechanisms of evolution, I found the following interesting paragraph:
During the years 1870-80 I had many opportunities of witnessing interesting phenomena in the houses of various friends, some of which I have not made public. Early in 1874 I was invited by John Morley, then editor of the Fortnightly Review, to write an article on "Spiritualism" for that periodical. Much public interest had been excited by the publication of the Report of the Committee of the Dialectical Society, and especially by Mr. Crookes's experiments with Mr. Home, and the refusal of the Royal Society to see these experiments repeated. (Italics, mine.)
Who is Mr. Crookes? And what were these experiments that the Royal Society did not even want to witness? Remember: curiosity is a condition "sine qua non" of a true scientist! The Royal Society was not curious? Why? Perhaps the experiments of Mr. Crookes were not worthy of the attention of the learned society, because they did not suggest anything new?

Best of the Web: Manhattan Grand Jury votes to indict Donald Trump, Trump responds, DeSantis says Florida will not extradite

trump
Trump Will Be The First Former President To Be Indicted.

A Manhattan grand jury voted to indict former president Donald Trump Thursday evening.

The grand jury's vote regards an alleged settlement made with adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the former president's 2016 campaign, according to five people with knowledge of the matter per the New York Times. Trump and Daniels allegedly had a sexual encounter in 2006, according to the claim.

Trump is the first former president to face criminal charges after office.

Comment: Trump responds, from Timcast:
"This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history," the former president wrote in a statement. "From the time I came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower ... the Radical Left Democrats ... have been engaged in a Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement."

Trump referenced previous efforts to indict him, including claims the former president had ties to Russia, two impeachment attempts, and last year's raid on Mar-a-Lago.

"The Democrats have lied, cheated and stolen in their obsession with trying to 'Get Trump,' but now they've done the unthinkable - indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant Election Interference."

"Never before in our Nation's history has this been done," Trump continued. "Weaponizing our justice system to punish a political opponent, who just so happens to be a President of the United States and by far the leading Republican candidate for President has never happened before."

"I believe this Witch-Hunt will backfire massively on Joe Biden," Trump concluded. "The American people realize exactly what the Radical Left Democrats are doing here. Everyone can see it."

Trump followed up his response in a Truth Social post:
These Thugs and Radical Left Monsters have just INDICATED the 45th President of the United States of America, and the leading Republican Candidate, by far, for the 2024 Nomination for President. THIS IS AN ATTACK ON OUR COUNTRY THE LIKES OF WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE. IT IS LIKEWISE A CONTINUING ATTACK ON OUR ONCE FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS. THE USA IS NOW A THIRD WORLD NATION, A NATION IN SERIOUS DECLINE. SO SAD!
"This evening we contacted Mr. Trump's attorney to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan D.A.'s Office for arraignment on a Supreme Court indictment, which remains under seal," said a spokesperson for New York district attorney Alvin Bragg. "Guidance will be provided when the arraignment date is selected."
DeSantis says his state will not assist in an extradition request. From Timcast:
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has responded to the news of former President Donald Trump's indictment, saying that it is a "weaponization of the legal system."

DeSantis also said that his state would not assist in an extradition request if one is made for the former president.

News of Trump's indictment by a New York grand jury broke on Thursday, despite previous reports that the grand jury hearing evidence was taking a month-long break.

"The weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head," DeSantis tweeted. "It is un-American."

DeSantis accused Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg of "stretching the law" to get the indictment.

"The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently bent the law to downgrade felonies and to excuse criminal misconduct. Yet, now he is stretching the law to target a political opponent."

DeSantis also said that his state will not assist with any potential extradition requests "given the questionable circumstances."

"Florida will not assist in an extradition request given the questionable circumstances at issue with this Soros-backed Manhattan prosecutor and his political agenda," DeSantis said.

George Soros, a far-left billionaire who tends to fund extremist candidates, pledged to donate at least a million dollars to Braggs' campaign through his Color of Change PAC. In their endorsement, the PAC noted that the now-District Attorney would not continue a justice system that "protects and privileges the powerful and well-connected."
