Phoenix, AZ: 'Sheets of Rain' - up to 4 inches of rain fell in an hour causing major flooding and interstate closures

Hard rain came down throughout the Valley and surrounding areas Tuesday morning, soaking several areas that are still reeling from last week's flooding. The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning that it extended twice.

3TV Meteorologist April Warnecke said showers would continue off and on throughout the day. An inch had fallen since 5:30 a.m., and it was still coming down more than an hour later, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Flood Watch and Advisory. The NWS later upgraded that to a Flash Flood Warning that originally was to expire at 9 a.m.. The NWS that warning extended until 11 a.m., and then again until 1 p.m.

Container ship crashes into Fremantle bridge as wild storm lashes Western Australia

A wild storm that lashed Perth and WA's south-west overnight caused a container ship to break its moorings and crash into the rail bridge in the port of Fremantle.

Wind gusts of 122kph hit Busselton, while 34 millimetres of rain was recorded in Donnybrook and 22 in Swanbourne.

About 20,000 homes lost power overnight, although Western Power said only 2,400 customers - mostly in Manjimup - remained without electricity this morning.

The ship that crashed into the Fremantle rail bridge was unloading a cargo of cars when its stern rope snapped, causing it to swing out into the port.

A second cargo vessel also broke its moorings and hit the refuelling vessel Parmelia 1, which was docked near the bridge.

At least 16 people, including nine children, were killed and over 80 others injured on Friday in Peshawar, capital of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, as roofs and walls of buildings collapsed due to heavy rain.

According to reports, 10 people, including six children and two women, were killed and 50 others injured when the roof of a madrasa and boundary walls collapsed in the city.

Six more persons died in the similar incidents in other areas. The badly hit areas of the city included Akhundabad, Gujjarabad, Wazirbagh, Faqirabad and other suburban areas.

The death toll might go up as the rescue workers were still busy in rescue work.

Downpour sets record in Seattle, floods in nearby Factoria

Overnight rainstorms on Wednesday shattered a 32-year-old Seattle record and aided in suppressing multiple wildfires throughout the Northwest, officials said.

According to the National Weather Service, 1.31 inches of rain fell at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in a 24-hour period that ended Wednesday morning. By 6 a.m. Wednesday, 0.85 of an inch of rain had fallen since midnight, shattering the date's record of 0.33 of an inch set in 1982.

The monthly average rainfall for all of August is under an inch.

"This is fairly uncommon for summer months," said Josh Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Seattle City Light reported it had about 4,300 customers without power early Wednesday in the White Center area. The power was restored later Wednesday morning.

Lightning kills 7, injures 11 in four districts of India

Lightning killed a farmer in Meherpur, three people in Brahmanbaria, two in Bogra and one in Moulvibazar districts yesterday and the day before.

A farmer was killed and three others were injured in separate incidents of lighting at different villages in Gangni upazila of Meherpur district yesterday.

The deceased is Shamsuzzaman Bhadu, 45, of Kunjanagar village, reports our Kushtia correspondent.

Sources said lightning struck Bhadu while he was working at his cropland around 11:00am yesterday, leaving him dead on the spot.

Meanwhile, in another incident, a woman and two minor girls were injured at Chandpur village when thunderbolt struck them at their house yard.

Heavy rains that have soaked a large swath of the United States over the last several days have spawned flash floods from Arizona to New England, submerging vehicles in parking lots and trapping drivers in their cars.

Over a foot of rain fell on Long Island in New York on Wednesday, forcing the closure of parts of the Long Island Expressway, Southern State Parkway, Northern State Parkway, Jericho Turnpike and other roads. Dozens of cars were seen submerged on the Southern State Parkway in Islip, Long Island, during morning rush hour.

Baltimore had picked up 6.27 inches of rain, enough to make it "the second-rainiest August day since records began in 1871," according to USA Today. Photos on social media showed cars swamped in a parking lot at BWI airport.

Dramatic dust storm blows through Eastern Washington

A massive, dramatic dust storm more often associated with the Southwest blew through Eastern Washington and north Idaho on Tuesday evening in advance of thunderstorms, lightning and rain.

Washington state troopers said the dust storm or "haboob" reduced visibility to zero in parts of Whitman and Adams counties, leading to numerous traffic accidents, especially in the Ritzville area southwest of Spokane.

Crashes in the wake of the dust cloud temporarily closed eastbound Interstate 90 west of Ritzville, the Spokesman-Review reported.

Avista Utilities said nearly 10,000 customers temporarily lost power in the Spokane and Palouse areas and in the Grangeville, Idaho, area.

Dust storm cuts off water and electricity in Kazakhstan's Aktau

A severe dust storm has left Aktau citing in western Kazakhstan without water and electricity, Tengrinews reports citing Aktau Business. The disaster hit the city in Mangistau Oblast on Sunday, August 10.

The city is located on the shore of the Caspian Sea, in the middle of a desert with a harsh hot climate and no immediately available fresh water. Mangistau atomic energy complex MAEC-Kazatomprom is the only source of electricity, heat and water for the city of Aktau and the surrounding towns and villages. The water is produced by desalination and distillation of salty water from the Caspian Sea.

The dust storm caused a failure at the central power line leaving around 200 thousand citizens cut off from electricity. After that water supply stopped too - both drinking and technical water

Nine killed in record rains in Southwest China

At least nine people were killed and 11 others went missing after heavy rains lashed southwest China for the last two days.

Nine deaths were reported in Xishui County of Guizhou Province, which was battered by torrential rain on Sunday and yesterday, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. So far 3,120 people had been evacuated for safety reasons.

Twenty-five homes were washed away and 42 others were seriously damaged.

Economic losses in Xishui County were estimated at 190 million yuan ( USD 30.88 million).

Nine people in Xishui were reported missing in floods and rescue work continued till late last night.
