2 dead, 3 missing after floods in Tungurahua Province, Ecuador

Three people have died and 2 are still missing after flash floods in Tungurahua Province in central Ecuador on 05 September 2021.

Flooding struck in areas around Baños de Agua Santa (known as Baños) after heavy rain caused the La Estancia river to break its banks, according to Ecuador's National Risk and Emergency Management Service (SNGRE). Landslides were also reported in the area, and a bridge was severely damaged leaving around 50 people isolated in the La Estancia sector.

Five people were swept away in the floods. As of 08 September, rescue teams had located the bodies of 3 victims. Two people are still missing and search and rescue operations involving the local Fire Department and Red Cross were continuing.

Nearly two months of rain fell in just a few hours in Lot-et-Garonne Department in southwestern France late on 08 September 2021.

Streets of the city of Agen were inundated with over 2 metres of water, according to the city government. Around 70 firefighters were deployed to the area and teams responded to around 130 incidents, mostly flooded cellars or buildings. No injuries or fatalities were reported. Local authorities opened the set up an evacuation centre in the town hall. According to local media reports, firefighters rescued around 20 people.

Areas of nearby Boé, Nérac and Marmande were also affected and several roads in the area closed. In Boé, part of the roof of a supermarket collapsed under the weight of the rain.

Météo France said between 19:00 and 22:00 on 08 September, the La Garenne station in Agen recorded a record 128.8mm of rain. As much as 80.5 mm of this total fell in just one hour. The 24-hour rain record previously was 73.6mm on from February 1990.

17 hospital patients die after floods in Hidalgo, Mexico

Further flooding in central Mexico has caused the tragic deaths of at least 17 patients of a hospital in Hidalgo State.

Heavy rainfall on 07 September 2021 caused the Tula and Rosas rivers to break their banks in the municipality of Tula de Allende (known as Tula) in Hidalgo State, situated about 70 km / 45 miles north of Mexico City.

Flood waters swept through streets and into buildings, including the hospital of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). Flooding also knocked out power in the area including the hospital which was caring for several COVID-19 patients.

Typhoon Conson leaves at least 12 missing, 12,000 affected in the Philippines

At least 12 people went missing while 12,000 others have been affected by Typhoon Conson in the Philippines, emergency services reported Wednesday.

Conson entered the Philippine archipelago on Tuesday with sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 150 kmph.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a report that at least 24 houses have been damaged by the typhoon, which caused flooding and power cuts in several areas in the central region of the archipelago.

A glacial outburst flood, a.k.a. jökulhlaup, from the Eastern Skaftárketill cauldron in Vatnajökull glacier started yesterday, mbl.is reports. As a result, an alert phase of the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management was declared in the area at noon yesterday.

The glacial outburst flood from the Eastern Skaftárketill cauldron comes in the wake of another flood from the western one, which began September 2 (see our report here).

A flood from the eastern cauldron has not occurred since 2018, and this one is expected to be about as large that year's flood. The flood in 2015 was considerably larger and caused more damage.

Ida latest: 71 dead in 8 states, power slowly returns after storm

The nation is still grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, which made landfall Aug. 29 and knocked out power to more than 1 million in Louisiana.

At least 71 people have died due to the storm -- which hit Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane -- as well as the devastation it left across eight states.

In Louisiana, 15 have died due to the storm's wrath. The Louisiana Health Department confirmed two more storm-related deaths Tuesday in St. Tammany Parish: a 68-year-old man who fell off a roof while making repairs to damage caused by Ida and a 71-year-old man who died due to a lack of oxygen during an extended power outage.

In the Northeast, at least 52 have died. The Harrison Police Department in Westchester County, New York, confirmed on Monday the recovery of a woman's body who went missing during last week's flooding.

Ida's flooding claimed the lives of at least 27 people in New Jersey, with four people still missing across the state, and the death toll is likely to rise.

Two of those missing have been identified as Nidhi Rana and Ayush Rana, who were last seen in the Passaic area.

Over 60 people killed in floods and landslides in 4 weeks across Nepal

Hundreds of homes were damaged and residents rescued after flash floods in areas of Kathmandu, capital of Nepal, on 06 September 2021. Meanwhile officials in the country report that over 60 people have lost their lives in flood and landslides over the last 4 weeks.

Kathmandu

Flooding began in Kathmandu after heavy rainfall late 05 to early 06 September. Some areas saw more than 120mm of rain in around 8 hours. The September average for Kathmandu is around 200 mm.

Local media, quoting police sources, said that over 380 houses were damaged and more than 200 people rescued by teams from police and military across the city. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

The worst of the flooding was in areas along rivers in the city, in particular the Bagmati and Manohara. Flood water in Bhaktapur, situated between the Kasan and Hanumante rivers, caused residents to evacuate their homes. Parts of Lalitpur were also affected. The Bagmati at Khokana in Lalitpur reached 4.5 metres on 06 September, well above the danger mark of 4 metres.

Damaging floods hit Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, India - 15 inches of rain in 24 hours

Heavy rain brought by a Low Pressure Area over the Bay of Bengal caused flooding in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in India from 06 September 2021. As much as 390 mm of rain fell in 24 hours in Telangana.

Local media reported flooding in Karimnagar, Rajanna Sircilla, Khammam, Warangal and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts in Telangana. Heavy rain from the Low Pressure Area fell on ground already saturated by rainfall during the previous 6 days. Roads were swamped and traffic brought to a standstill in low-lying areas of Warangal city. Damaged roads left some rural areas isolated.

According to reports, at least 3 people have lost their lives as a result of the flooding in Telangana. In separate incidents, 2 people died in Bhadradri Kothagudem district and another in Warangal district.

2 killed in flash floods in Ecatepec, Mexico after almost an inch of rain in 90 minutes - 3rd such event within a week for country

Two people have died and dozens of vehicles swept away after violent flash floods in the municipality of Ecatepec in Mexico.

Ecatepec municipality, officially Ecatepec de Morelos, is situated in the State of Mexico, around 20 km north of Mexico City.

Heavy rain fell during the afternoon of 06 September, triggering the flash floods in Ecatepec and parts of neighbouring Nezahualcóyotl. Authorities said 24 mm of rain fell in 90 minutes, mainly in the central area of ​​San Cristóbal and in the communities of the Sierra de Guadalupe.

Images shared on Social Media showed mud and flood water flowing through streets, dragging along vehicles and debris in Ecatepec. Many of the main roads in the area were blocked, causing chaos for drivers. Local authorities deployed trucks and buses to assist people stranded by the floods.
