PIT BULL ATTACK
A 4-year-old boy playing in his backyard Wednesday afternoon was fatally mauled by one or two dogs, Detroit police said.

The attack occurred just before 3 p.m. on the city's west side, Cpl. Dan Donakowski said.

"We're not sure if it's one or two dogs, but Animal Control has two dogs in custody," Donakowski said. "It's believed that the dogs belonged to a neighbor behind where the victim lived, but as far as how it happened, we're unsure at this time."

Giant oarfish beaching leaves villagers in awe, sparks conservation concerns in Misamis Oriental, Philippines

A biologist says the country's scientific community should 'take a deeper look' at why the giant oarfish are surfacing from their natural habitats
A biologist says the country's scientific community should 'take a deeper look' at why the giant oarfish are surfacing from their natural habitats.
For almost a decade now, marine life conservationists have taken an interest in why beaching incidents of an ocean-deep serpent-like dweller, the giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne), have become more frequent in the coastal waters of at least eight countries worldwide, including the Philippines.

The giant oarfish, often called the "king of herrings," is a rare and enigmatic deep-sea species known for its immense size and distinctive appearance. They have ribbon-like bodies that can stretch more than 36 feet in length.

They are not well understood, and their behavior and biology remain largely mysterious. Their occasional appearances near the coastlines have led to various speculations and superstitions.

The bodies of the mammals were discovered last week in the waters of Lake Tefé, approximately 520 kilometers west of the city of Manaus, the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Institute informed on Friday, notes Agerpres.

The exact cause of death has not yet been determined. However, it is believed to be related to the current heat and drought, phenomena that have generated lake water temperatures of over 39 degrees Celsius.

Many rivers in the Amazon basin are carrying much less water than the average of recent years. The normal dry season is now exacerbated by the El Niño climate phenomenon.

Two dead after grizzly bear attack in Banff National Park, Canada

bear
Two people have died following a grizzly bear attack in Banff National Park.

According to reports, the Banff field unit received an alert from a GPS device on Friday evening at approximately 8 p.m., coming from the Red Deer River Valley. The alert indicated a bear attack; and while a team that is specially trained in wildlife attacks was mobilized, weather conditions did not allow a helicopter to be used.

The response team reached the area by 1 a.m., finding two individuals who were dead. The team also encountered a grizzly who was aggressive and was ultimately euthanized.

Currently, the Red Deer and Panther valleys are closed off. The closure is from Snow Creek Summit east to the National Park boundary, and north to Shale Pass. According to the Parks Canada website, it is due to a 'grizzly bear in the area.'

In recent weeks there have been several bear encounters in both Banff National Park and provincial parks across the province.

A horse skeleton with a bronze curb bit (a metal piece inserted into its mouth to guide the mount) was found in the Çavuştepe castle belonging to the Urartians who ruled in the Eastern Anatolia Region.

Çavuştepe Castle was constructed by Urartian King Sarduri II. in 750 BC.

The ongoing excavations at Çavuştepe Castle and the necropolis area north of the castle are being led by Prof. Dr. Rafet Çavuşoğlu, who is the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYÜ).

For the first time in Urartian history, a curb bit in the form of a ring has come to light.

Last year, at the location where a skeleton believed to belong to the Urartian ruling class was unearthed, this year an at skeleton with a bronze curb bit (a metal piece inserted into the horse's mouth to control it) was found, as well.
