Bear attack feared after body of university student found on Hokkaido mountain in Japan

mmmmmm
An attack by a brown bear is suspected after a body found on Mount Daisengen in the Hokkaido town of Fukushima on Nov. 2 was identified as a university student from the prefectural city of Hakodate.

Hokkaido Prefectural Police's Matsumae Police Station announced on Nov. 4 that DNA analysis confirmed the body is of Kanato Yanaike, 22, who had gone missing while on a mountain climbing trip. The cause of death was hemorrhagic shock. A brown bear carcass was found near the body, and the police are investigating on the assumption that he was attacked by the bear.

According to the police station, Yanaike had told an acquaintance that he was going mountain climbing on Oct. 29, and his car was found left at the starting point of a trail on the 1,072-meter-high mountain. The location where the body was discovered is close to the site where three other men were attacked by a brown bear on Oct. 31, leaving two of them injured. The men resisted the attack with a knife and chased the brown bear away. Authorities including Hokkaido police are investigating the latest case as a possible series of attacks by the same bear.

On Nov. 6 or later, the Hokkaido Research Organization will investigate the stomach contents recovered from the brown bear carcass

Environmental organisations are working to bury a whale that died after becoming stranded on the sandbar of a Christchurch beach, despite major efforts to save it.

Environmental organisation Project Jonah said last night it was assisting in efforts to aid the sperm whale on South New Brighton Beach in Christchurch alongside Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga and the Department of Conservation (DoC).

In an update this morning, Project Jonah said the whale had died.

"Large whales like this one pose a huge [logistical] challenge for a refloat due to their size and weight, and often they have underlying health conditions, which is likely the reason for them stranding," the organisation posted online.

Orcas attacked a Polish yacht for 45 minutes, sinking it off the coast of Morocco, tour company says

mmmmm
Orcas have gone and done it again, demonstrating that they still despise boats for reasons scientists can't figure out.

For months now, orcas, also known as killer whales, have been assaulting boats — especially, it seems, yachts — off the coasts of Spain and Morocco, sending several to the bottom of the sea.

A Polish touring company, Morskie Mile, said that's exactly what happened to one of its yachts on October 31. In a Facebook post, a spokesperson for the company said that its vessel, the "Grazie Mamma II," was in the Strait of Gibraltar when a pod of orcas targeted it. The animals, which can grow to be up to 30 feet long, attacked the boat's steering fin "for 45 minutes," the post said, "causing major damage."

"The crew is safe," the post added, but the boat itself sank at the entrance to Tanger-Med, a Moroccan port.

A child was killed in a dog attack Tuesday night in northeast Spokane, according to the Spokane Police Department.

SPD says they responded to reports of an animal attack at a home on East Walton Avenue near North Nevada Street just after 8 p.m. Tuesday night when officers arrived and found that a child was attacked by the family's dog.

SPD says the child died from his injuries despite the efforts of first responders.

SPD says family member's attempts to protect the child led to the dog being severely hurt, and officers ultimately euthanized the dog at the scene.

"I believe our 911 caller was traveling down Old Whitesville Road and saw the dogs dragging around an object and turned around and then discovered that object was a human being," Berkeley County Sheriff's Capt. Japan is seeing the number of people attacked by bears in fiscal 2023 increase at an unprecedented pace, recent government data showed, with people warned of more encounters as the wild animals forage ahead of hibernation in a lean year for nuts.

A total of 109 people were hurt, two fatally, between April and September, mostly in the northern part of Japan's main island Honshu, according to the Environment Ministry's data. The figure is the highest for the same period since fiscal 2007 when the government started such monthly statistics.

The current record for the highest number of people wounded by the animals, which include Asian black bears and Ussuri brown bears, is 158 in fiscal 2020.

Fifteen prefectures saw victims during the six-month period from April, with around 70 percent of cases in northeastern Japan, according to the ministry's preliminary data released in early October.
