Man hospitalized after pit bull terrier attack in Thibodaux, Louisiana

Dog attack
A 43-year-old man was hospitalized following a Pit Bull attack Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

According to a news release from the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office, at 12:15 p.m. Feb. 7 deputies responded to 120 Cortez St. in Thibodaux after receiving reports about a man being mauled by a male Pit Bull.

After deputies arrived at the scene within 12 minutes of receiving the call, they saw the dog still latched on to the man's arm, the news release said.

Authorities said the deputy fired two shots and killed the dog as the animal was still latched on to the victim's arm. The unidentified man suffered injuries to his face from the dog attack, police said.

The victim was treated on the scene by Acadian Ambulance and transported to Thibodaux Regional Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was later released. Animal Control arrived on scene and collected the dead Pit Bull.

Investigators said the man went to the residence to visit a female acquaintance that was sleeping inside the house at the time. As the man opened the door to enter the home, he was immediately attacked by the woman's Pit Bull, authorities said.

The attack continued into the front yard, and another resident who was passing by called the landlord before the Sheriff's Office was eventually alerted, the news release said.

Boar attacks elderly man in Odisha, India

Wild boar
In the latest incident of human-animal conflict, a rogue wild boar attacked and seriously injured a 72-year-old man in Pravakarpur village here.

The incident took place on Monday when the man was returning home after taking a bath in a pond.

"Niranjan Jena was critically injured in the attack and was hospitalised. The Forest Department is bearing the cost of his treatment. Besides, ex-gratia will be paid to his family," Divisional Forest Officer Bimal Prasana Acharya said.

"The area where the incident happened is close to mangrove forests and animals often stray into the village," Mr Acharya said.

"The animal might have sneaked into the village to eat crops and vegetable as the village is located close to the forest area and wildlife corridors," he said. "Forest personnel are keeping night watch in the village. The Department has set up two night-vigil squads," the official said.

A bee expert told WBBH that seeing bees wash up at the beach is very unusual

Thousands of dead and dying bees are washing up on a popular beach in Southern Florida.

Naples beach goers had to watch where they stepped Tuesday after some people say they have been stung just along the shoreline, according to NBC affiliate WBBH-TV.

Martha Duff lives in Naples and recently had a painful encounter with the bees.

"I've been stung a couple of times and at first, I didn't know what it was and then I realized and then I had an allergic reaction," Duff said.

Naples residents say the problem started only a few days ago. They are both concerned and confused.

"Why are there bees? Where are they coming from? And why are they in a very specific area of the beach?" Duff said.

A bee expert told WBBH that seeing bees wash up at the beach is very unusual. The cause could be anything from a nearby pesticide spraying forcing them to the water or a swarm flying overhead that became exhausted and flew into the water.

The Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter tagged and removed about 20 dead birds from Caswell Beach and Oak Island Monday afternoon.

Janet Kurz, a volunteer at the shelter, went to Caswell Beach to clean up the scene.

"I don't like seeing any dead birds but when you see nine at one time it kind of smacks you in the face that there is something that isn't right," said Kurz.

Kurz said she walked along the beach and found nine birds, a combination of pelicans and gannets. Kurz took pictures of each one and noticed a familiar trend.

"Seven had wing injuries, all identical in the same place same kind of injury," said Kurz. She recognized the injury because it's the same one several of the birds recovering at the shelter.

Clinic Director Mary Ellen Rogers has a theory to explain these trends.

34 years of tracking dog attacks on people

Dog attack
90% of fatal and disfiguring dog attacks come from one group of breeds

Nearly 35 years ago, as a young libertarian-leaning farm-and-business reporter and avid runner, I was within a few weeks attacked while running on main-traveled roads in two separate incidents by dogs who were hell-bent on killing me.

The first attack came from a German shepherd who gave me many warnings, but I had nowhere to quickly go to be anywhere except in front of his home.

The second attack came from a pit bull, who struck silently, from behind, half a block and many doors from his home. I had no knowledge of his existence before I was fighting for my life.

Between those two attacks, I also witnessed - - from too far away to help - - another attack by the same German shepherd in almost the same place, which resulted in another man's death from heart failure. Unable to help the man, I caught the German shepherd and took him home. The owner had the German shepherd euthanized.

Both the German shepherd (both times) and the pit bull had just escaped from supposedly secure premises. Strict enforcement of confinement and leash laws, the conventional response to dog attacks, could not have prevented either the injuries to me or the man's death.

A 9-year-old boy and his mother were transported to area hospitals with serious facial injuries after the family dog bit them Sunday afternoon, according to the St. Lucie County Fire District.

The boy, who was bitten on the right cheek, was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center, West Palm Beach, a fire official said. The mother was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute after being bitten on the ear, said Battalion Chief Scott West.

The dog was described as a pit bull mix. The incident happened at 1:10 p.m. at the family's home on Byron Street near Sportsman's Park. The names of the child and mother weren't released.

The owners turned the dog over to Port St. Lucie Animal Control. It will be put in a mandatory 10-day quarantine "because of the vicious attack," said police spokesman Master Sgt. Frank Sabol. The dog will be housed by the Humane Society of St. Lucie County.
