John Boyle column: Sorry, but some dog breeds are dangerous

The Boerboel breed, which debuted at the 140th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in January, is a powerful dog bred over centuries for its size, muscularity and ability to protect farmsteads.
And here we go again.

A large, powerful type of dog — bred over centuries for its size, muscularity and ability to protect farmsteads — may have killed a person, and people are naturally outraged.

At anyone criticizing the breed.

Seriously. This time the dog in question was a Boerboel, a breed originating in South Africa that can weigh up to 200 pounds.

Bent Creek resident Jane Marie Egle died earlier this month, found bleeding and unresponsive with one of her Boerboels guarding her. Buncombe County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Natalie Bailey said Egle's wounds were consistent with an animal attack but an exact cause of death had not been determined. Egle owned six of the dogs and had a website offering Boerboel puppies for sale.

This is the chilling moment cops open fire on three pit bulls after they viciously attacked a man and killed his tiny dog.

The officers were forced to shoot the dogs after earlier attempts to scare them off using batons and a water hose had failed.

A mobile phone video of the brutal attack shows one man - believed to be the owner - desperately trying to restrain the pit bulls.

The clip then shows officers using batons in a vain attempt to stop the bloody mauling - which lasted for nearly five minutes.

Officers try clubbing the dogs repeatedly in an attempt to stop the attack before drawing their weapons and shooting them at point blank range.

Dead fin whale discovered in Commencement Bay, Washington

A dead, 50-foot-long fin whale floated in Tacoma’s Commencement Bay on Friday, May 12, 2017.
A dead, 50-foot-long fin whale floated in Tacoma’s Commencement Bay on Friday, May 12, 2017.
It's a rare find in Puget Sound, dead or alive. The Department of Fish and Wildlife says a dead fin whale turned up in Commencement Bay Friday, apparently struck by a cargo ship.

"What likely happened here is this fin whale was part of a group, and it got struck outside the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and then that ship just pushed all the way into Commencement Bay in Tacoma," said Michael Harris.

Harris is the former executive director of the Pacific Whale Watch Association and has studied whales most of his life. He's not sure what to make of this latest fin whale. He says commercial hunters nearly wiped out fin whales, along with humpback, until it was banned in 1966. Since then, fins have been making a comeback on the coast.

"We've seen large congregations of fin whales pretty regularly outside the Strait of Juan de Fuca, but they're starting to work their way in more and more," said Harris.

A dead minke whale has been washed up on a Northumberland beach.

The creature was discovered at Alnmouth yesterday. Experts have described it as being an incredibly underweight juvenile and about 4.25metres in length. The cause of death is unknown at this stage.

Jane Hardy, from Alnwick, is a volunteer marine mammal medic for British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) and she arrived at the scene at just after 6pm.

She told the Gazette last night: "I am sad to say that I was called out to a minke whale on Alnmouth beach. It was first reported at 5.30pm. Amble Coastguards assisted the BDMLR and samples were being taken. It was dead when it breached, but the cause of death is unknown. It was an incredibly underweight juvenile.

"Coastguards were trying to organise to move it further up the beach so the next tide didn't take it."

Grizzly bear attacks, injures man near Cody, Wyoming

Bear attack
A grizzly bear attacked and injured a man looking for shed antlers Tuesday northwest of Cody, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

The man was bitten on his arm and leg, but none of the wounds were punctures or required serious medical attention, said Brian DeBolt, large carnivore conflict coordinator for Game and Fish.

"Luckily, it was real minor injuries considering he was attacked by a bear," DeBolt said.

The man told Game and Fish officials that he was walking through a hilly, timbered area when he surprised the bear, which was likely on a day bed. The bear briefly attacked and then fled, DeBolt said.

The man walked to his vehicle and drove himself to a hospital.

Game and Fish officials will not look for the bear, as they do in some attacks, because the bear was acting naturally.

Police say a 5-year-old girl has been critically injured after being attacked by several dogs at a Detroit home.

Police say the girl was playing with the dogs Tuesday night inside the home on the city's east side and then went outside, where they mauled her.

She was taken to a hospital, where police say she was in critical condition.
Police said it wasn't immediately clear how many dogs were involved in the attack.

Deputy Chief Renee Hall says the dogs' owner had had previously been warned about failing to turn over the animals following an earlier attack. She says he knew the dogs "had some level of aggression and he should have taken the necessary precautions."
