Woman mauled to death by family pit bull on Long Island, New York

PIT BULL ATTACK
A Long Island woman was killed and her body found mutilated in her backyard after she was attacked by a dog that belonged to her step-son, who died just weeks ago, according to police.

After leaving for work Wednesday morning, the woman's husband returned to the home on Terrace Court in Albertson around 1 p.m. to find his 70-year-old wife mangled and mauled in the backyard, the pit bull still going at her body, police said.

The man called police, and an officer who responded to the scene shot the dog after the canine turned and charged at him. The officer was taken to the hospital, police said, traumatized after what he had seen in the yard.

People in a southwestern Japanese city have come under attack from monkeys that are trying to snatch babies, biting and clawing at flesh, and sneaking into nursery schools.

The attacks — on 58 people since July 8 — are getting so bad Yamaguchi city hall hired a special unit to hunt the animals with tranquilizer guns.

The monkeys aren't interested in food, so traps haven't worked. They have targeted mostly children and the elderly.

Elephant stabs mahout to death with its tusks in southern Thailand

ELEPHANT
An elephant stabbed its mahout - or elephant trainer - to death with its tusks yesterday morning in Nahkhon Si Thammarat province in southern Thailand. The elephant stood watch over the man's corpse for hours, said police.

Yesterday at 10.30am, officers from Chawang Police Station received a report that a man had died after he was pierced by his own elephant's tusks. A team of police and rescue workers rushed to the scene on a hill in the forest, where they found a big elephant guarding the body of its mahout Chaichana Matchanimwong. Chaichana's body was covered in wounds, said police.

Officers said they tried to separate the elephant from the mahout's body, but there was not much they could do. The elephant stood guard over the body for hours and eventually walked away into the forest.

Police were finally able to retrieve Chaichana's body and take it to the hospital for an autopsy to be carried out. After the autopsy is complete, Chaichana's body will be taken to his relatives for religious ceremonies to take place.

Crocodile attacks 2 tourists swimming at resort in Mexico

croc
A crocodile has left two American holidaymakers injured after mauling the pair at a popular Mexican resort.

A 24-year-old man and his friend, 30, who were on holiday in the Puerto Vallarta area, were attacked on Monday night.

Both men, thought to be from Illinois, were rushed to hospital after being attacked by the beast while in the waters off Bocanegra Beach.

It's been reported that the younger tourist was attacked first, before his pal jumped into the water to save him.

It comes almost a year after Kiana Hummel, 18, was dragged under the water by a 12-ft vicious crocodile while swimming off the coast of the same town.

As she got herself out of the water, the beast clamped down on her ankle with its powerful jaws before dragging her back under the waves.

Police in Japan are searching for a wild monkey that has attacked 10 people in the space of a fortnight.

The attacks began on 8 July in the Ogori district of Yamaguchi prefecture in the country's south-west. In the most serious incident, it badly scratched an infant after invading a family home.

"I was vacuuming when I heard my child crying, so I turned around and saw the monkey had grabbed her by the legs while she was playing on the floor. It looked like it was trying to drag her outside," the baby's mother told local media.

Last weekend, the monkey opened the screen door of a first-floor apartment and scratched the leg of a four-year-old girl, leaving her with minor injuries, before attacking other people nearby, according to the Kyodo news agency.
