An 8-year-old was left with minor injuries after being attacked by a cougar in Washington's Olympic National Park on Saturday evening, park officials said.

The child was camping with their mother at Lake Angeles, in the Heart O' the Hills area south of Port Angeles when the cougar attacked, according to a news release from the National Park Service.

The feline predator "casually abandoned its attack after being yelled and screamed at by the child's mother," the park service said.

Park personnel were notified about the attack at 6:30 p.m. and quickly responded, the release said.

The child experienced "minor injuries" and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Park staff escorted the family back to the trailhead, says the release.

Man killed by pack of dogs in Dale County, Alabama

mmmmm
What investigators initially thought was as a homicide in Dale County was soon revealed to be a fatal animal attack, according to authorities.

Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum said the body of Demarcus "Sam" McKenzie II, 27, of Skipperville, was found in a residential driveway in the 5500 block of County Road 33 Saturday morning.

The sheriff initially said during the preliminary investigation, it appeared that McKenzie had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, however, further investigation revealed it was a dog attack.

Bynum said witness statements and physical evidence did not support the initial shooting assumptions. He confirmed McKenzie was not shot and his death is no longer a homicide investigation.

A pleasant summer's day at Town Beach became an open-air science class on Tuesday afternoon, as a crew of researchers conducted a necropsy of a young whale that washed up near Gooseberry Island.

Nicholas Vidmar of Westport Animal Control said the dead humpback was spotted over the weekend in the water near Gooseberry Island, then washed ashore at one of the private properties along East Beach Road.

Earlier Tuesday the body was pulled by tugboat to Town Beach, where biologists and researchers from the International Fund for Animal Welfare attempted to determine how it died.

"They think it's no less than a year old," Vidmar said, adding that it was possibly female and about 20 to 25 feet long.

Officials are baffled by the remarkable behaviour of a large pod of pilot whales that grouped together in a heart shape before stranding themselves on a remote Western Australian beach.

Drone footage captured the moment the pod of almost 100 long-finned pilot whales moved tightly together before stranding themselves at Cheynes beach about 60km east of Albany on Tuesday evening.

By Wednesday morning, more than 50 whales lay dead on the shore, with volunteers, government workers and scientists fighting to save 46 more.

WA's environment minister, Reece Whitby, said researchers from across Australia were baffled by the never-before-seen behaviour of the whales in the hours leading up to the stranding.

Comment: About 9 days prior: Entire pod of 55 whales dies after mass stranding on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland

Tourists exploring San Diego's famous La Jolla Cove came face to face with aggressive sea lions in a scary encounter over the weekend, as the animals charged at them unexpectedly.

The incident took place Sunday evening as summer crowds, mostly tourists, explored California's iconic beach taking pictures of the sea mammals and their newly weened pups, reported FOX5.

A video taken of the incident shows a sea lion jumping out of the water to charge people, who start screaming and running away. A few moments later, another sea lion leaps out of the water, joining his mate in chasing off the crowd.

A woman was found dead on a hiking trail in Montana on Saturday after coming into contact with a grizzly bear near Yellowstone National Park.

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks said in a statement how the unnamed woman was found dead near West Yellowstone, a Montana town nestled in the Custer Gallatin National Forest, just west of the famous national park.

They said the woman was found 'following an apparent bear encounter' based on what investigators determined were grizzly bear tracks at the scene.

The department said the investigation into the grizzly attack was ongoing in what is the latest attack by wild animals this summer.

Rangers issued an emergency closure of the area where the woman was found, which is popular with hikers.

Around 2,000 penguins found dead on Uruguay coast

mmmmmm
About 2,000 penguins are found dead on the coast of eastern Uruguay in the last 10 days.

It is still a mystery as to what caused the mass deaths. Local authorities said the Magellanic penguins died in the Atlantic Ocean and were carried to shore by the current. 90% of the dead birds are young, without fat reserves and with empty stomachs.

They died on their wintry migratory path from southern Argentina to the east coast of Brazil. All samples tested negative for bird flu. A similar die-off occurred last year in Brazil. Experts estimate that over-fishing or the weather could be the cause.

Dog mauls baby to death after breaking into neighbor's house in Colombia

dog attack
A newborn girl has died after a neighbor's dog entered her home and attacked her.

The child was at home with her family when the attack occurred on Thursday in Cota, in the Colombian state of Cundinamarca.

The breed of the dog is unknown, but it's thought to have escaped from its owner's home before breaking into the child's house, local news Noticias Caracol reported.

Local authorities are investigating the attack and how the dog managed to enter the child's home.

While the majority of dogs never attack humans, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that over 4 million people are bitten by dogs in the U.S. each year, with one in five of these bites requiring medical attention, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
