Winterlike storm dumps up to 23 inches of fresh snow in Montana and Wyoming

The proverb 'April showers bring May flowers' might not apply to the north-central United States this year as the start of the new month brought a far-reaching snowstorm to the region.

The largest snowfall accumulations were reported in the higher elevations, with a general 10 to 20 inches of snow falling over the mountains of Wyoming and Montana. One mountain just north of Cooke City, Montana, was buried under 23 inches of fresh snow, the highest snow total reported across the region.

By daybreak on Thursday, most of the snow had shifted over the Dakotas as the storm tracked eastward, covering the Black Hills with nearly a foot of snow.

Rapid City, South Dakota, measured 6.5 inches on Wednesday, making it the snowiest start to April on record, according to the National Weather Service office in Rapid City. The previous snowfall record for April 1 was 3 inches set back in 1927. A few more inches of accumulation are in the forecast before the snow tapers off by the weekend.

Heavy April snowfall closes roads on Mount Hortiatis in Greece - foot of snow overnight

Eleven snow ploughs were dispatched by municipal authorities in northern Greece to clear roads on and around Mount Hortiatis, which received more than 30 centimeters of snowfall overnight and on Thursday morning.

Heavy snowfall in the highlands and strong downpours at lower altitudes continued to cause problems on the roads between the village of Hortiatis and Agios Vasilios, Oraiokastro and Melissohori, and also between Langada and Iraklio, the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) reported.

As the saying goes, 'April showers bring May flowers'. But many areas around the world just enjoyed an unexpected April treat-snow showers! Over the past few weeks, the weather fluctuated from chilly and damp to warm and spring-like. With a few recent days of sunshine and warmer temperatures, a handful of plants responded to Nature's call for Spring. But clearly, Winter was not ready to let go.

Heavy falling of snow has been recorded this Wednesday in many counties of Albania.

As a result of this blizzard, 5 cm of snow have accumulated in different districts of northern and 20 cm in mountainous areas, but other remote areas have sustained a thickness of 60 cm and lower areas of 20 cm.

A mass of polar air from Central Europe brought snow to the interior of the country. A help to those who also stay at home there.

The snow "started out weak on Monday afternoon, it looked like it was going to disperse", tells NiT Carlos Andrade, who lives in a village near Guarda. But on Tuesday, March 31, the villages in this and other districts in the interior woke up to an image that was already a little out of season: completely covered in white.

Even for the thousands of Portuguese who are at home, it was impossible not to notice that the last day of March started, all over the country, colder. It is to blame for a mass of polar air coming from Central Europe that has led to a drop in temperature, rain and even snow in several places. There are cut roads and snow-covered villages, which facilitates the common goal these days: to avoid going as far as possible.

No spring in the north: European route E6 to Finnmark is closed due to snowy storms and alternative drive through Finland is not allowed with closed borders.

Bad weather with heavy snowfalls and low viability have stopped traffic at the only road to Finnmark over Kvænangsfjellet mountain.

Organized convoy driving behind a snow-plow and even fully closed roads are nothing new for drivers inside the Arctic Circle in wintertime. This March, though, has been exceptional with record amounts of snow, and one storm followed by the other.

"We have very demanding driving conditions and have many closed roads both in recent days and throughout this winter," says Siril Veiåker Nilsen with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to news-agency NTB.

A bitterly cold northerly wind, freezing temperatures and snow, yes snow, greeted Dubrovnik this morning as April opened with extreme weather.

The hills and mountains in the wider Dubrovnik region have a dusting of snow, like icing sugar on a birthday cake, and still the sleety snow start to fall. The current temperature in Dubrovnik is a chilly 3 degrees and with the northerly wind the real feel is unbelievably minus 6 degrees!

Ongoing drought in Brazil, Argentina threatens crucial crop harvests

An unusually dry end to the summer season across parts of South America is expected to impact the harvests of important crops in the region.

"Rainfall averaged below normal across much of southern Brazil, including [the states of] Rio Grande Do Sul, Santa Catarina, for the month of March, and in many instances the entire summer season," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Jason Nicholls.

Some major cities in these states include Porto Alegre, Santa Maria and Florianopolis, although even Curitiba in Parana had a drier-than-normal month of March.

Comment: All over the planet erratic seasons and extreme weather are devastating harvests and have been for a number of years resulting in depleted stocks, this, coupled with the draconian and unfounded coronavirus lockdown measures means there's a good chance many countries could be looking at significant food shortages in the near future: UK's empty supermarket shelves: Panic is not the problem

At least 42 people die in floods, landslides caused by heavy rains in southeast of Brazil

The third month of 2020 saw numerous environmental disasters that impaired climate change and vice versa, including a deadly tornado in the U.S., landslide in Brazil and heavy rains in Pakistan.

Here is a look at the global environmental disasters during the previous month.

March 3:

- At least 19 people die in the U.S. state of Tennessee as a result of a heavy tornado that also causes major damage to buildings, roads, bridges, utilities, and businesses.

- Some 900 people are displaced after flash flood destroys houses in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.

March 4:

- Hundreds of people are either displaced or left isolated after floods in northern parts of Namibia, according to local media reports.

As if 2020 wasn't weird enough, winter came back with a bang to Germany on Monday as parts of the country were hit with snow, hailstones and freezing temperatures.

With the growing coronavirus pandemic and strict social distancing measures, the year has not got off to a great start.

So just to top it all off, we've had flurries of snow and hailstones at the beginning of spring. Perhaps this was an early April Fool's?
