UK hit by over 20 earthquakes already in 2022: where and when they've hit

Britain is shook by earthquakes a lot more often than people realise
© PABritain is shook by earthquakes a lot more often than people realise
Shropshire residents were shocked by a 3.8 magnitude earthquake yesterday (May 30). But, they occur much more frequently in Britain than you'd expect.

The quake was the third to hit the UK in the last 24 hours, taking place at around 3.36pm and at a depth of 4.9 miles. According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), 3.8 magnitude earthquakes only happen in the UK around every two years.

However, unbeknownst to many of us, the tremors are not unusual in the UK: it's just that a lot of the time, we miss them. But over the years, the South East has been subject to some of the biggest in the country.

This week in volcano news - Hunga Tonga is erupting, Hualalai earthquake

erupts

In the last week, it was discovered that the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai volcano is still erupting. New information shows that the volcano produced a VEI 6 eruption, deepening its caldera by more than 700 meters or 2000 feet. Meanwhile in Hawaii, a moderate magnitude earthquake occurred on the flanks of the Hualalai volcano, leading some to suspect that it was volcanic in origin. And, in Papua New Guinea, magmatic uplift was detected at a volcano which has not erupted in more than 135 years. This video will discuss these volcano related news stories, as told and analyzed by a volcanologist.

Strong magnitude 6.2 earthquake - Banda Sea, East Timor - 4th major quake within 14 hours

maps
Strong magnitude 6.2 earthquake at 49 km depth

The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Lospalos, Municipio de Lautem, Timor-Leste, in the morning on Friday, May 27th, 2022, at 11:36 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.4. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 6.3, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.3.

Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
