At least 20 die after shallow 6.8-magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia's Maluku islands (UPDATE)

At least three people have died after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Ambon in Maluku on Thursday morning, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) first reported that the quake was felt at 6:46 a.m. Jakarta time with an epicenter located about 40 kilometers northeast of Ambon at a depth of 10 km. No tsunami alert was issued.

The agency also reported that the quake was followed by a 5.6-magnitude aftershock at 7:39 a.m. Jakarta time, with an epicenter located about 18 km northeast of the provincial capital of Ambon at a depth of 10 km.

The BNPB confirmed that three people had died as a result of the earthquake. The victims have been identified as Narti Rumain, Mateis Frans and Lai Nai -- all of whom were crushed by collapsed buildings.

BNPB spokesperson Agus Wibowo added that three people had suffered injuries following the earthquake, two of whom were identified as Djamila Lasaiba and Gamar Assegaf.

A strong earthquake Thursday killed at least 20 people and damaged a bridge, a hospital and other buildings on one of Indonesia's less populated islands. Parts of a building at an Islamic university collapsed in Ambon, the capital of Maluku province. Local disaster official Albert Simaela said a teacher was killed there when parts of the building fell on her.

Simaela said a main hospital in Ambon was damaged and patients were evacuated to tents in the hospital's yard.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Agus Wibowo said at least 19 others were killed and more than 2,000 people took refuge in various shelters.

The magnitude 6.5 quake was centered 20.5 miles northeast of Ambon at a depth of 11 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has occurred in Los Lagos, Chile, about 610 miles (980 kilometers) south of the capital, Santiago, the USGS reported. Reports say that the depth of the earthquake was 80 miles (129 kilometers).

An earthquake measuring 5.8 magnitude shook Istanbul on Thursday, causing panic among residents, the evacuation of schools and public offices, and at least some damage to buildings.

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said in a statement that the quake struck in the Sea of Marmara at 13:59 pm (10:59 GMT) at 6.9 kilometres below ground.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said eight people were injured and had received treatment. "Apart from small damage, we have not received any reports so far that would pain our hearts," he said.

At least 19 people have been killed and more than 300 others injured in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Tuesday after a 5.8-magnitude quake jolted several cities in the northern parts of the country including capital Islamabad.

According to US Geological Survey, the epicentre of the quake was near New Mirpur in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police in Mirpur, Sardar Gulfaraz Khan, said that at least 19 people were killed and over 300 injured in Mirpur and surrounding areas due to the powerful quake.

Pakistan Meteorological Department's earthquake centre said the 5.8-magnitude earthquake was located near the mountainous city of Jehlum in Punjab province.

Some houses collapsed in Mirpur following the earthquake, Deputy Commissioner Raja Qaiser said. Parts of a mosque also collapsed in the area. Emergency has been declared in hospitals across PoK.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Puerto Rico at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, around 60 kilometers north of the town of San Antonio, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reports.

The earthquake was registered at 03:23 UTC on Tuesday. The USGS originally reported its magnitude as 6.3, but later reduced the number to 6.0. No tsunami warning has been issued yet. The closest residential area to the epicenter of the quake is San Antonio, a small town with a population of just over 2,000 people, and the municipality of Isabella in the northwestern part of the island.

Strong tremors were reported across the island, with terrified locals taking to social media to share firsthand accounts of the quake.

"I am still shaken to the core. It was very strong. I was really scared," a netizen based in Aguadilla, a town on Puerto Rico's northwestern tip, tweeted.

Witnesses reported hearing a "long sound like if it was thundering" before the jolts rattled the ground.

The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, with magnitudes of about 4.6 or greater.

Albania was rattled by its strongest earthquake in decades Saturday, officials said, sending people fleeing into the streets in several cities, damaging buildings and triggering power cuts in the capital.

The epicenter of the shallow 5.6 magnitude quake, was near Durres, less than 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of the capital, Tirana, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Albania's defense ministry said it was the "strongest earthquake in the country in the last 20 to 30 years."

"There are no deaths," defense ministry spokeswoman Albana Qajaj said.

Some 80 people sought medical help in both Tirana and Durres, 21 of whom were hospitalized due to injuries caused by falling objects or parts of walls as well as for panic attacks, Health Minister Ogerta Manasterilu said.

Qajaj said that houses and buildings in Tirana had been damaged but were still standing and that the ministry was accessing damage in other towns and villages.

Authorities later said the quake had damaged about 600 homes and knocked out power and water facilities in Tirana, Durres and some other western and central districts.

Indonesia has been struck by two earthquakes within an hour. The first earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale, Java island on Thursday. The second earthquake of the same intensity struck Indonesia's Bali island, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

So far, no reports of damage or casualties have been reported from the southeast Asian country. Indonesia, home to more than 260 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire".

In March this year, four people were killed after an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 hit off Java island. The powerful quake had damaged more than 200 houses, swaying buildings as far away as the capital.

Up to 22m people are estimated to be displaced by the end of the year

A record seven million people were displaced by disasters in the first half of 2019, suggesting that mass displacement due to extreme weather events is "becoming the norm," according to a new report.

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, which uses data from governments, United Nations humanitarian agencies, and media coverage to create its reports, concluded that nearly twice as many people were displaced in the first half of the year by weather events than by conflict and violence. The report was compiled before Hurricane Dorian struck the Bahamas - the numbers affected by that storm are still unclear.

IDMC estimates that the number of new displacements associated with weather events will reach 22m by the end of the year, more than tripling the current number, and making 2019 one of the worst years for climate displacement since records began.

Six earthquakes in five days reported near Cherokee, North Carolina

One area of the North Carolina mountains has had six small earthquakes in five days, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quakes have all been within a couple miles of each other near Cherokee, North Carolina, in the Great Smoky Mountains, the USGS earthquake monitoring system shows. None of the earthquakes caused damage or injuries, USGS said.

The biggest quake was a 2.5 magnitude temblor around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday about 2.5 miles southwest of Cherokee, according to the USGS.

A moderate earthquake struck China's mountainous southwest on Sunday, killing at least one person and injuring 63.

The magnitude 5.4 quake struck Neijiang, a city in Sichuan province, at 6:42 am, the government earthquake monitor reported.

At least 132 houses collapsed and more than 5,000 were damaged, according to a city government statement. It said 2,417 people were relocated.
