Shallow 5.0 magnitude earthquake rattles West Texas: 'Like the vibration of a train, but bigger'

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake rattled West Texas on Thursday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake epicenter was about 27 miles west of Mentone, Texas, and was located 3 miles below the surface. It hit at 10:16 a.m CDT.

Residents of El Paso, about 175 miles west of the reported epicenter, felt the quake, which was originally rated at 4.7 magnitude.

The El Paso region isn't accustomed to being rattled by earthquakes, and incredulous residents wondered aloud on social media about what they had just felt.

6.0-magnitude earthquake hits southern Philippines

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake rocked Sarangani province Thursday night, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the quake had a depth of 49 kilometers in the town of Maasim when it jolted the area at 11:38 p.m.

Intensity VI was recorded in General Santos City, while Intensity V was recorded in Malungon and Alabel in Sarangani.

Koronadal City in South Cotabato and Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental recorded Instensity IV and I, respectively.

Phivolcs warned of possible damages and aftershocks.

A 7.2-magnitude quake has struck Russia's Far East region, striking off the Kuril Islands and prompting a tsunami warning for the sparsely populated region.

The quake was felt across the region on Wednesday afternoon local time, with a depth of 56.7km (35 miles). There are no reports of damage or casualties as of yet.

The earthquake triggered a tsunami alert in Hawaii, 5,600 kilometers away, but it was soon called off, with the US National Tsunami Warning Center concluding there was no danger to the small Pacific island chain.

A tsunami warning was also issued for Severo-Kurilsk District of Russia's Sakhalin Region, a local branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.



Comment: Three days ago Croatia's capital Zagreb was rocked by a 5.3M earthquake, the strongest to hit the city in 140 years.

UrduPoint reports that a small tsunami did indeed strike the northern Kurils:
A magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred some 500 kilometers (300 miles) from the Russian Far Eastern city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the Kamchatka office of the Geophysical Service of the Russian academy of Sciences said.

"Earthquake 14:49 (02:49 a.m. GMT), max magnitude 7.6, total of 463 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The data will be specified," it said.

No casualties or destruction have been reported by regional emergencies services.

There is a risk of tsunami in the North Kuril area after the earthquake, the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismological station's head, Yelena Semenova, told Sputnik.

The authorities said residents were being evacuated on the Kuril island of Paramushir due to the tsunami threat.

Later in the day, the the department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry in Sakhalin island region said that the height of a tsunami wave in Severo-Kurilsk town was 50 centimeters (1.6 feet).

"The tsunami wave with the height of 50 centimeters hit Severo-Kurilsk at 03:15 p.m. local time [04:15 GMT]. There were no preliminary reports about injuries or damage. The threat of tsunami remains, that is why residents of Severo-Kurilsk will stay in a safe area on a hill. Experts will make a decision to cancel the alert after the low tide begins," the statement said.

7 earthquakes rattle Oklahoma in 24 hours

In just less than 24 hours, seven earthquakes rattled across Oklahoma, according to data from the United States Geological Survey.

The temblors ranged in intensity from magnitude to 1.6 to 2.5.

The first quake — measuring at magnitude 1.9 — struck at 10:44 a.m. Sunday roughly 2.5 miles south of Perry, the USGS reported. The second quake — magnitude 1.7 — came just over a minute later in roughly the same location.

Perry is about 64 miles north of Oklahoma City.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to be at 4.6851 degrees south latitude and 105.0546 degrees west longitude.

The Croatian capital was awoken this Sunday morning by a huge earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale.

At 6.23 this morning Zagreb was rocked as the earthquake, with an epicentre seven kilometres north of the city and at a depth of ten kilometres caused havoc. Parts of the capital were left without electricity and the facades of buildings fell onto the fortunately empty streets. There is no news of any injuries or fatalities, however material damage has been reported.




Comment: Among the older buildings that were badly damaged were churches, including Zagreb's cathedral, the tallest building in Croatia - and which is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, like Notre Dame in Paris. Part of one of its two towers broke off during the quake:



Croatia's PM Andrej Plenkovic has since described this as "the strongest quake to hit Zagreb in 140 years."

RT reports that local authorities are urging citizens to get out of their homes and check on the elderly... while maintaining social distancing:
Strong quakes have struck Croatia's capital Zagreb, damaging buildings downtown, including the city's main historic cathedral. Officials urged people to leave home but keep social distancing amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Zagreb's head of emergency services, Pavle Kalinic, urged people to leave their homes. "Get out of the houses and help your older neighbors," he said.

The Interior Ministry asked people who had fled their homes to maintain a "necessary distance" to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 disease, and to wear face masks if possible.

6.3-magnitude quake strikes south of Indonesia's Bali

A strong earthquake jolted Indonesia's holiday island of Bali early on Thursday (March 19), but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at 1.45am (1.45am Singapore time) with an epicentre 255km south of the town of Nusa Dua, the US Geological Service reported.

The epicentre was a relatively shallow 10km deep.

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook Salt Lake City and its suburbs early Wednesday, sending spooked residents fleeing their homes, knocking out power for tens of thousands and closing the city's airport.

The epicenter was just southwest of Salt Lake City, between the city's airport and the Great Salt Lake. The temblor and its aftershocks physically and mentally rattled approximately 2.8 million people who are already hunkered down amid the coronavirus epidemic.

There were no initial reports of injuries, said Utah Emergency Management spokesman Joe Dougherty.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake has hit off the coast of the island state of Vanuatu in the South Pacific, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake was registered at 03:13 UTC. The epicentre was located 97 kilometres (60 miles) northwest of the village of Sola. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 178.8 kilometres (111 miles).

There have been no reports about possible casualties or destruction.
