A chemical plant in northern Illinois went up in flames on Wednesday morning, sending up plumes of black smoke and prompting officials to advise nearby residents to shelter in place as emergency crews responded to the blaze.

The fire broke out at the Carus Chemical Company complex in LaSalle, a city of less than 10,000 residents located about 100 miles southwest of Chicago.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 9 a.m. after an explosion at the plant, and the ensuing blaze caused significant damage before it was contained, LaSalle Fire Chief Jerry Janick said at a news conference. Additional equipment was ordered to fully extinguish the fire and start an investigation.

'Urgent need' to understand link between teens self-diagnosing disorders and social media use, experts say

Sufferers may be driven online because of the difficulty in accessing affordable GP appointments, professor says.

There is an "urgent need" to investigate the increasing number of children and teenagers self-diagnosing with neurological conditions, mental illnesses and personality disorders, a trend being driven by social media and difficulty accessing healthcare, psychiatrists and paediatricians say.

A paper published in January in the journal Comprehensive Psychiatry describes how prolonged social media use, especially on video-sharing platforms including TikTok, is exposing young people to a growing number of content creators making videos about their self-described tics, Tourette syndrome and other self-diagnosed disorders.

American Gas Association says possible ban on gas stoves 'reckless,' not based on 'sound science'

The American Gas Association (AGA) has taken aim at what it calls a"reckless" potential ban on gas stoves, and said a report linking the use of natural gas for cooking with asthma is "not substantiated by sound science."

AGA represents more than 200 local energy companies that deliver natural gas to more than 73 million customers throughout the United States.

In a statement on Jan. 10, the association criticized research in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health that linked indoor gas stoves with an increased risk of respiratory illnesses like asthma in children.

Comment: New year, new boogeyman! As far as the toxicity of stuff found in and around the home, it's likely that gas stoves barely register compared to the harms we receive by thousands of other household products and appliances. Remember in the 1980s' when they told us hairspray was destroying the ozone layer? This is yet another distraction.

AOC dragged for claiming gas stoves are linked to brain damage

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) attempted to defend President Biden's proposed ban on gas stoves in a viral Twitter spat Tuesday — only to be heckled herself by snarky social media users.

"Did you know that ongoing exposure to NO2 from gas stoves is linked to reduced cognitive performance," the Bronx and Queens lawmaker tweeted in response to Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) vowing to "NEVER" give up his gas stove.

But the congresswoman's attempted clapback backfired, as detractors — mainly politicians and conservative activists — were quick to pile on.

"Is this an attack on @GordonRamsey," joked Max Avery, a former Arkansas state legislative candidate.

The University of Southern California's school of social work will no longer use the word "field" in its curriculum, citing its racist "connotation."

USC's Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work said the change was critical to support anti-racist social work and inclusivity.

The department specifically decided to remove the word "field" from its curriculum and replace it with "practicum," according to the letter, which was dated Jan. 9 and shared to Twitter.

"This change supports anti-racist social work practice by replacing language that would be considered anti-Black or anti-immigrant in favor of inclusive language," the letter said.

The letter continued: "Language can be powerful, and phrases such as 'going into the field' or 'field work' maybe have connotations for descendants of slavery and immigrant workers that are not benign."

A man armed with a knife has been shot by police after injuring six people in an unprovoked attack in Paris's busy Gare du Nord train station, the French interior minister has said.

Gerald Darmanin told reporters at the scene that the man had attacked several people, including a police officer, with a "bladed weapon" at about 6.43am local time. Within a minute, off-duty police officers returning home after a night shift shot the attacker three times, Mr Darmanin said

He said the unnamed assailant was currently "between life and death" in hospital. French media reported that the attacker had been shot in the chest.

Pentagon ends COVID-19 vaccine mandate for US troops

US forces are no longer required to receive the coronavirus vaccine after Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin formally rescinded his August 2021 mandate late Tuesday.

The requirement was sacrificed to help secure Republican support for the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act, which sets Pentagon spending and policy priorities for each fiscal year.

"No individuals currently serving in the armed forces shall be separated solely on the basis of their refusal to receive the COVID-19 vaccination if they sought an accommodation on religious, administrative or medical grounds," Austin wrote in a memorandum to the force.

Previously, all US service members — active-duty and reserve — had to receive the vaccine or face separation. Thousands of troops resisted the mandate by requesting medical and religious exemptions, but only some were approved.

FDA vaccine advisers 'disappointed' and 'angry' that early data about new Covid-19 booster shot wasn't presented for review last year

covid vaccine
Some vaccine advisers to the federal government say they're "disappointed" and "angry" that government scientists and the pharmaceutical company Moderna didn't present a set of infection data on the company's new Covid-19 booster during meetings last year when the advisers discussed whether the shot should be authorized and made available to the public.

That data suggested the possibility that the updated booster might not be any more effective at preventing Covid-19 infections than the original shots.

The data was early and had many limitations, but several advisers told CNN that they were concerned about a lack of transparency.

US taxpayers spent nearly $5 billion on the new booster, which has been given to more than 48.2 million people in the US.
