EU Digital Services Act will put an end to free speech & rational inquiry

EU Digital services act
Since today, 25.08.2023, the European DSA is legally in force for all very large online platforms and search engines, hosting services and online businesses (with the exception of small and micro businesses excluded under Art.29 of the Regulation).

You can access the 67-page Regulation via this link. It is available in a multitude of languages. This is the EN version :

https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32022R2065

It is impossible to explain all aspects of the DSA. Accordingly, I will limit myself to the most relevant points regarding the very large online platforms such as X, FB, Instragram.... and the very large online search engines such as Google, Modzilla, Edge ...

The EU has deliberately chosen to define the term "illegal content" very broadly.

The definition of the term, in the text of the Regulation itself does not hint at its real intentions.

Art.3(h) defines the term as follows :
"illegal content" means any information which in itself or in connection with an activity, including the sale of products or the provision of services, contravenes Union law or the law of a Member State consistent with Union law, irrespective of the precise law of a Member State, irrespective of the precise subject matter or nature of that law

Massive explosion reported at Khartoum Airport amidst uptick in fighting between Sudan military and Rapid Support Forces

sudan war
The Sudanese news sources reported an explosion of the fuel tanks of airplanes at Khartoum Airport amid the tensions in the African country.

A source in the Sudanese army has announced that the explosion occurred when the weapons warehouse of the rapid reaction forces was targeted by an air strike.

The cities of Khartoum and Omdurman in recent days have witnessed a fierce conflict between the army forces and the Sudanese rapid reaction forces.

It is said that seven civilians were killed in today's clashes.

Some data on the RSF from Al Jazeera:
How was RSF formed?

The group evolved from so-called Janjaweed militias, which fought in a conflict in the 2000s in the Darfur region, where they were used by the government of long-ruling President Omar al-Bashir to help the army put down a rebellion.

An estimated 2.5 million people were displaced and 300,000 killed in the conflict.

International Criminal Court prosecutors accused government officials and militia commanders of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.

Over time, the militia grew. It was made into the RSF in 2013, and its forces were used as border guards in particular. In 2015, the RSF along with Sudan's army began sending troops to fight in the war in Yemen alongside Saudi and Emirati forces.

[...]

In October 2021, the RSF was involved in another coup with the army, halting the transition to a democratically elected government. The move triggered new mass pro-democracy rallies across Sudan that continue until today.

What are the source of tensions between army, RSF?

The army and pro-democracy groups have demanded the RSF's integration into the regular armed forces. Adel Abdel Ghafar, a fellow at the Middle East Council, said the RSF "has resisted integration into the army, understanding it would lose its power."

Negotiations on integration been a source of tension that has delayed a final signing of a new transition agreement, originally scheduled for April 1.

Dagalo and al-Burhan reportedly remain at odds over who would be the commander-in-chief of the military during a multiyear integration period. The RSF said the commander should be the civilian head of state, a situation the army rejects.
And from TASS:
The situation in Sudan escalated amid disagreements between the army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who also heads the ruling Sovereignty Council, and the head of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (known as Hemedti), who is al-Burhan's deputy on the council. The main points of contention between the two military organizations pertain to the timeline and methods for unifying the armed forces of Sudan, as well as who should be appointed as commander-in-chief of the army: a career military officer, which is al-Burhan's preferred option, or an elected civilian president, as Dagalo insists. On April 15, armed clashes between the rival military factions erupted near a military base in Merowe and in the capital, Khartoum.

Black elementary school students diverted to improvement course without consulting parents

Bunnell Elementary School florida
Bunnell Elementary School
Bunnell Elementary staff members Friday pulled Black fourth- and fifth-graders out of their regularly scheduled activities to attend a meeting about expectations to improve low standardized test scores.

It didn't matter whether the students had failing or passing grades; Flagler Schools Coordinator of Communications Jason Wheeler confirmed that the students were selected to attend the meeting based on race.

What followed was a five-slide PowerPoint titled "AA Presentation" which noted that Black students had underperformed on standardized assessments for the last three years. According to the presentation, which was riddled with typos, 32% of the school's Black students scored at Level 3 or above for math and language arts; that number should be 41% according to testing guidelines.

Comment: School principal and teacher are placed on leave:
The principal and a teacher at a Flagler County, Florida, elementary school are on paid administrative leave after an assembly was held only for fourth and fifth-grade Black students, who were collectively told to improve their school performance, according to the school district - regardless of how each student was doing individually.

The two school staffers were placed on leave days after the assembly was held at Bunnell Elementary School on August 18. Only African American students from the two grades participated, Flagler County Schools spokesperson Jason Wheeler told CNN.

During the assembly, a 2023-2024 school year Goals and Objectives PowerPoint presentation was used that read in part, "AA have underperform (sic) on standardized assessment for the last past 3 years," Flagler County School Board chair Cheryl Massaro told CNN in an email.

"AA is African American, and that is one subgroup the FDOE requires annual reporting on from all Florida schools. The power point, created by one of the presenters shows the data results," Massaro said in the email.
The walkback:
Florida school district officials apologized Thursday for an elementary school assembly in which Black students were singled out for a presentation on low test scores.

Officials at Flagler County's school district in northeastern Florida said at a news conference that the assembly at Bunnell Elementary School was a "horrible, horrific mistake" that shouldn't have happened, and that the school's principal has been put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

"The Flagler School Board does not support segregation," said Cheryl Massaro, the school board's chair.

Bunnell Elementary staff members last Friday pulled Black fourth- and fifth-graders out of their regularly scheduled activities to attend a PowerPoint presentation about low standardized test scores.

The presentation led by two Black teachers noted that Black students had underperformed on standardized tests for the past three years.

[...]

Although there was no intended malice involved, the assembly was carried out in a way that doesn't reflect the district's values, Lashakia Moore, the interim superintendent, said in a video posted to the district's website.

UN warns Ukraine over attacks on Russian civilian targets

Shelling

Kiev's use of drones against Moscow and border regions was raised at the Security Council...

The UN is concerned about shelling and drone attacks on Russian civilians, which contravene international law, Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo told the Security Council on Thursday.

Ukraine has ramped up artillery attacks on the Russian regions of Donetsk, Kursk and Belgorod over the past three months, as its much-heralded offensive on the Zaporozhye front failed to make any significant advances. The shelling frequently employs US-supplied cluster munitions, banned by most UN member states.

Kiev has also ramped up attempts to target Moscow's financial district with drones. The UAVs that managed to slip past the Russian capital's air defenses have caused minor property damage, but so far no casualties.

DiCarlo, an American diplomat overseeing Political and Peacebuilding Affairs since 2018, said:
"We are also concerned about the possible impact on civilians of the shelling of Russian border communities and drone attacks deep inside Russia, including Moscow. Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure - wherever they may occur - are indefensible and strictly prohibited under international law."

Thanks to government, Maui's Lahaina fire became a deadly conflagration

lahaina wildfire maui
Front Street in Lahaina, Maui, August 2023
The most destructive natural disasters are never 100 percent natural. Human choices, land use, and government policies play a big role in how harmful hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, flash floods, and wildfires are to the affected communities.

And after catastrophes like the wildfire that destroyed much of the historic Hawaiian city of Lahaina last week, it's worth taking stock of how much of the disaster was the result not of natural or accidental factors, but of policies and institutions that can be changed.

Though details are still emerging, it's becoming clear that government failure did much to make this disaster worse — and possibly even started it. While the so-called experts are blaming climate change — and in the process demanding that government grab even more power and authority ostensibly to someday give us better weather — the destructiveness of this fire was the product of an all-powerful and all-incompetent régime.

Germany plans to ease legal gender change

Lisa Paus
© John MACDOUGALLGermany's Families Minister Lisa Paus (pictured) said the updated law would protect 'the right of every person to be recognised in their gender identity and to be treated with respect'
The German cabinet on Wednesday signed off plans to help people change their legal gender more easily, but the proposals have stirred criticism from feminists, politicians and even the trans community.

Under the plans, Germans will be able to change their name or legal gender by making a simple application to their local registry office.

They will not have to give a reason or provide any medical information.

In the case of children under 14, parents will be able to submit the application. Minors over 14 may do it themselves, but only with the consent of their parents.

Israel: Ben Gvir says his rights outweigh those of Palestinians

Far-right security minister says he and his family have a greater right to move around the West Bank...

Israel's far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, said on Wednesday that his rights trumped those of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Speaking in an interview with Israel's Channel 12, Ben Gvir was asked about the increasing tensions in the West Bank, which in recent weeks has seen Palestinians and Israeli settlers being killed. Ben Gvir said that his rights were 'more important' than those of Palestinians and more needed to be done to ensure the security of Jewish settlers.

The national security minister went on to add that the country's defence minister, Yoav Gallant, was not doing enough to clamp down on Palestinians.

Biden probe censored findings of intelligence agency scientists that Covid was likely made in lab

Wuhan
© unknownInvestigators outside the lab in China
U.S. President Joe Biden's 90-day probe into the origins of COVID-19 censored the input of intelligence agency scientists who concluded the virus was most likely genetically engineered. Sky News Australia's Sharri Markson has the story:
In May 2021, President Biden tasked the Intelligence Community with providing an assessment into how the pandemic began after reports, first published by Sky News, that researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology had been hospitalised with Covid-like symptoms in November 2019 in the suspected first cluster of the pandemic.

When the report was published it concluded that most intelligence agencies assessed the virus, even if it had leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, was natural rather than manipulated in a laboratory.

Sky News can reveal that this was not the assessment made by the four groups within the intelligence agencies that actually engaged in scientific analysis, who concurred that there was either a highly likely or reasonable chance the virus was genetically engineered.

Scientists at the Defence Intelligence Agency's National Centre for Medical Intelligence (DIA NCMI) had conducted rigorous research on the genomic sequence of the virus and firmly concluded that it was, most likely, a laboratory construct.

In a world exclusive, Sky News can for the first time reveal their story, their research and their discoveries about SARS-CoV-2.

They had been working with the FBI's Weapons of Mass Destruction unit, until the co-operation between the two agencies was blocked, with a director at the Defence Intelligence Agency claiming the FBI was "off the reservation" on the topic of the origins of COVID-19.

Mass panic over energy, yet we give up our food security without a murmur

Ammonia
© UnknownBritain's Haber-Bosch plant
The closure of Britain's last Haber-Bosch plant, which produced ammonia vital for the creation of fertilisers and explosives, symbolises the country's growing dependence on imports and the broader trend of deindustrialization, says Ed Conway in the Times. Here's an excerpt:
What is the single most consequential invention in modern human history? It's tempting to vote for the aircraft or the motorcar, or maybe the computer or the internet, but if you ask me it has to be the Haber-Bosch process. This complex chemical reaction, devised by Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch in the early 20th century, is not universally famous. Yet nearly half of us wouldn't be alive without it.

Haber and Bosch, a German scientist and engineer, were the duo who worked out how to capture nitrogen from the air and turn it into ammonia - from which we make fertiliser (and explosives).

Nearly everything you eat will contain nitrogen made this way. Actually it gets wilder than that, because more or less half the nitrogen inside your body (and there's quite a lot, not least in every strand of your DNA) is nitrogen from a Haber-Bosch plant.

Comment: When the food runs out, none of this will be a problem.
