Man bit roommate's ear off out of fear Trump might 'send him back to Mexico'

Marco Ortiz
Police say a man bit the ear off another man in Pittsburgh as they argued about President Donald Trump.

Victim Marco Ortiz, 30, was bitten at his apartment at around 6:45 a.m. Monday in the city's East Liberty neighborhood after a verbal argument turned physical. He ran to a gas station for help.

According to Ortiz, the roommate bit off part of his ear, twisted his finger and threatened to kill him. Not because of anything Ortiz did, but because his roommate feared that Trump will try to send him back to Mexico.

"Anytime he's drinking, he's going crazy," Ortiz said. "All he would say is 'if Donald Trump gonna take me out I gotta kill so many people, then somebody kill me and I am happy.'"

The victim's ear was recovered by police in the apartment. Police say he was taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in stable condition.

Police say they know who bit the man's ear and are searching for him. They wouldn't give his name.

One American hedge-fund manager who owns two New Zealand homes told Osnos he expected at least a decade of political turmoil in the United States. PayPal co-founder and Facebook investor Peter Thiel also owns property there, and has described New Zealand as "utopia."

An unknown person in the province of Missan in southern Iraq, launched a social media page called Basra, where he threatens women with violence and humiliation if they do not dress in a more Islamic way.

It is unknown how many people are behind this initiative but the authors of the page have posted photos of girls in scarves and hijabs on the walls of schools and universities. The photos of many girls were taken and put up on the walls without their knowledge.

Next to their photographs, the perpetrators wrote that in spite of the veil, there are serious doubts regarding their honor and dignity. On the Basra social media page, it is written that the activists want these girls and women to dress in modest Islamic dress which consists of a long dress and a headscarf.

They further wrote that it is not necessary for the girls to cover their face and hands as it is in the Gulf countries. But in any public place, women should be dressed in a way so that their "assets" aren't visible, such as their breast area.

Otherwise, the perpetrators will use Photoshop to impose faces of these girls onto the naked bodies of random women found on the internet and such collages will be distributed throughout the county.

If that happens, the parents of those girls whose faces will be distributed using pornographic images will be forced to kill their daughters in order to restore the family's honor.

1 in 3 Californians vote to be a sovereign nation - poll

California protest

The number of Californians who would rather see their state a sovereign nation than part of the United States has jumped to 32 percent, a new Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll showed. In 2014, it was only 20 percent.

The support for independence in the Golden State also by far surpasses the national average, which stood at 22 percent, down 2 percentage points from the level in 2014.

The poll was taken from December 6 to January 16 and has a credibility interval of 5 percentage points in California.

The support for independence apparently rose in the wake of Donald Trump's election in the November presidential election. California voted overwhelmingly for his rival Hillary Clinton, who scored almost 62 percent of votes compared to Trump's less-than-32 percent.

'They killed the wrong guy': Cops respond to home invasion and kill homeowner

Homeowner killed by police

A family is now grieving after a home invasion left their beloved Christopher Mark Thompkins dead. The burglar, however, was not the one to kill Thompkins — the police who responded to the 9-1-1 call did.

"They shot the wrong guy," said Brenda Thompkins, 51, of Penn Hills.

Early Sunday morning, Brenda and Christopher Thompkins were asleep in bed when they awoke to the sound of an intruder. Brenda, who is a licensed gun owner, handed over her pistol to Thompkins who pursued the would-be attacker through the house.

The couple was upstairs and all Christopher could think about, according to Brenda, was to get downstairs to save his mother.

"He was just saying, 'My mom, my mom,'" Brenda Thompkins said. "That's all he was worrying about."

Unhinged woman goes off on Trump supporter on airplane, cabin cheers at her departure

Unhinged woman
Scott Koteskey said he was about to take his window seat on a flight from Baltimore to Seattle Saturday when a woman in the seat next to him — in a "very stern voice" — asked: "Did you come here to cheer or to protest?"

Given the inauguration of Republican President Donald Trump occurred in Washington, D.C., Friday, Koteskey knew what the woman was referring to and answered, "I came here to celebrate democracy, ma'am."

With that, Koteskey said, the woman went off on him, saying he "put a crazed man in charge of the nuclear codes! You should be ashamed!"

When Koteskey replied that "we're all entitled to our opinions here, ma'am," he said the woman told him she's "entitled to get drunk and puke in your lap! I'm going to throw up right in your lap! You make me sick! Don't talk to me! Don't look at me!"

Oh, and Koteskey said she called him a "bigot" and that he should get off the plane.

With a high dependence on tourism revenue, Spain is intensifying efforts to lure high-spending travelers from the LGBT community.

According to an AFP report, the Fitur tourism fair in Madrid has dedicated a special section to gay and lesbian travelers.

Spain's western region of Extremadura promotes annual gay pride festivities, as well as bird watching trips, local architecture and rural tourism.

"The goal is to appeal to the growing number of gay and lesbian couples who are having children," said Hugo Alonso of the Extremadura's tourism promotion agency.
