A bipartisan group of 42 attorneys general is suing Meta, alleging that features on its Facebook and Instagram social media platforms are addictive and are aimed at kids and teens, the group announced Tuesday. The support from so many state attorneys general of different political backgrounds indicates a significant legal challenge to Meta's business.

Meta is now facing multiple lawsuits on this issue in several districts. Attorneys general from 33 states filed a federal suit against Meta in the Northern District of California, while nine additional attorneys general are filing in their own states, according to a press release from New York Attorney General Letitia James' office. Besides New York, the states that filed the federal suit include California, Colorado, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Washington and Wisconsin.

The lawsuits are another demonstration of the bipartisan priority state law enforcers have placed on protecting kids and teens from online harm.

Comment: The New York Post writes:
The states say Meta has embraced a business model designed to maximize the amount of time teen users spend on its apps through "harmful and psychologically manipulative product features," despite making public assurances that they are safe.

[...]

They cite research showing that Meta-owned social apps are "associated with depression, anxiety, insomnia, interference with education and daily life, and many other negative outcomes."

[...]

The states are seeking unspecified financial damages, as well as "injunctive relief" blocking Meta from engaging in the harmful business practices outlined in the suit.

Democrats had an utter meltdown after House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was unanimously elected by the Republican majority to lead the House of Representatives, the first Republican to be unanimously elected by his conference since 2011.

According to an emailed statement posted to X by Punch Bowl News founder Jake Sherman, President Joe Biden's 2024 campaign strongly condemned the election of Johnson, despite Biden's congratulations in an official statement from the White House.

"MAGA Mike Johnson's ascension to the speakership cements the extreme MAGA takeover of the House Republican Conference," Ammar Moussa, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, said in a statement.
This came in contrast to Biden offering his and first lady Jill Biden's "congratulations" to Johnson and their commitment to try to work "in good faith."

400,000 hens to be culled after bird flu case in Bulgaria

chickens
Eggs, feed, fertiliser and nearly 400,000 laying hens will be destroyed after a case of avian influenza at a farm in Debelets, North Central Bulgaria, the Director of the Regional Food Safety Directorate Dr Stanimir Spasov told BTA on Wednesday. A case of avian influenza was registered in Veliko Tarnovo Region on October 20, after which the farm was closed down.

Influenza-diseased laying hens at the farm will be humanely killed.

A 10-kilometre surveillance zone has been established around site of the outbreak

All eggs that left the farm over the last 21 days will be traced, seized and destroyed. There is information that some of the eggs have been exported to Greece.

Comment: It's usually the case that it's not the whole flock that is infected, however the whole flock is culled. And with a 'surveillence zone' that size, it's likely more cases will be found and many more chickens will be culled.

One wonders if this is the beginning of yet another season of mass culling across the planet, that, last year, significantly reduced flock numbers, further discouraging producers who aren't eager to invest in what is becoming an increasingly risky endeavour. Furthermore, this comes amid egg price corruption that has caused a significant number of farmers to leave the market. This also comes at a time of a startling number of suspicious, and devastating, fires at egg farms:

Police in Maine located a 'vehicle of interest' and are asking for help in finding Robert Card.

At least 22 people were killed and 30 more injured following a shooting in Lewiston, Maine, which took place at two locations on Wednesday night, a law enforcement source told Fox News' Jacqui Heinrich.

Comment: As of Thursday evening local time, AP is reporting that 18 people are confirmed dead.

Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck said during a Wednesday night press conference that he wouldn't comment on the number of victims in the shooting, stating that the situation is "very fluid."

The Lewiston Police Department identified Robert R. Card of Bowdoin, Maine, as a person of interest in a Wednesday night Facebook post.

Comment: More from CNN:
Here's a timeline of the evening:
  • Around 7 p.m.: Two shootings are reported in Lewiston with multiple casualties, according to Maine's Department of Public Safety commissioner Mike Sauschuck.
  • 8 p.m.: Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office releases photos of the armed suspect and says it's investigating two active shooter incidents. The agency encourages "all businesses to lock down and or close while we investigate."
  • 8:09 p.m.: Maine State Police says there's "an active shooter in Lewiston" and tells people to stay inside with their doors locked. "Law enforcement is currently investigating at multiple locations," the agency added.
  • 8:26 p.m.: The neighboring city of Auburn urges all residents to shelter in place.
  • 8:53 p.m.: Lewiston police identify the shooting locations as Schemengees and Sparetime Recreation, a restaurant and bowling alley.
  • 9:17 p.m.: Lewiston police release the image of a white vehicle, asking members of the public to contact them if they see it. Maine State Police tell CNN the image is of the suspect's car.
  • 10:52 p.m.: Police on social media name Robert Card as a "person of interest" in the shootings and release his photo.
  • Around 11:30 p.m.: Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck says a "vehicle of interest" was found in Lisbon, about 8 miles from Lewiston, but the person of interest remains at large.
  • 11:34 p.m.: Lisbon officials say all town offices will be closed on Thursday and tell people to keep sheltering in place.
NBC reports that Card's psychological deterioration began when he was fitted for hearing aids a few months ago:
Card, a firearms instructor and a longtime Army reservist, began to hear voices that were saying "horrible" things about him about a couple of months ago when he was fitted for high-powered hearing aids, according to Katie Card, who is married to his brother.

She said his mental health had deteriorated quickly.

"He was picking up voices that he had never heard," she told NBC News. "His mind was twisting them around. He was humiliated by the things that he thought were being said." [...]

Katie Card said the family did their best to reassure Robert Card that the comments were not real, including by verifying with some of the people he claimed had made the remarks.

But, she said, "it turned into a manic belief." [...]

"We don't know this person. This is not him," she said.

Hard lessons from Israel's high-tech border failure

IDF observation tower
High-tech gadgets adorn an IDF observation tower.
Over the last two weeks I have, like everyone else, been closely following Hamas' horrific attack on Israel and the resulting war. So many others have already done an eloquent job covering it at a general level that I'm not going to try to do the same, however. There is one specific aspect to the whole (ongoing) story, though, that I am keen to return to and focus on in brief here, in part because I see it as directly relevant to some of the core themes I've been trying to think through for some time now. That is the total failure of Israel's extremely expensive, high-tech Gaza border defenses to stop the initial surprise attack by Hamas.

I've seen a surprising number of people, on both Right and Left, argue or imply that the swift collapse of these supposedly impenetrable defenses, along with the subsequent very slow response by the Israeli military to the attack, in itself justifies a conspiratorial explanation - e.g. that Netanyahu, or Washington, or whomever on the inside must have wanted the attack to get through, as otherwise it couldn't have gotten through. I find this idea ridiculous, and telling. Telling in that many apparently find the notion that Israeli Jews were deliberately betrayed and allowed to be murdered by their own fiercely nationalist government to be a more readily believable theory than that complex technological systems could possibly fail. I think this fact speaks to something important about how we moderns have come to misperceive how things work, misplace our faith in systems, and often accidentally make ourselves more rather than less vulnerable to chaos.

Comment: The reason people find it believable is because they've betrayed their own before, as have other countries. A recent example is the Covid vaccine rollout, which was essentially an experiment on the people.

Over the last few years, Israel spent more than $1.1 billion USD to construct a sprawling security barrier along the entirety of its nearly 40-mile border with Gaza. This was, allegedly, to be the fence to end all fences. In addition to 20-foot high multi-layered wire, steel, and concrete barriers, the "smart fence" integrated a vast network of cameras, motion and other sensors, radars, and remote-controlled weapon systems, all monitored by dozens of towers that served as data hubs and high-tech observation- and listening-posts. An underground wall and sensor system, designed to stop infiltration by tunnels, was extended far below the earth along the whole border, at great expense. Meanwhile Israel's advanced, exceptionally costly "Iron Dome" missile defense system protected the skies.

AI-created child sexual abuse images 'threaten to overwhelm internet'

The "worst nightmares" about artificial intelligence-generated child sexual abuse images are coming true and threaten to overwhelm the internet, a safety watchdog has warned.

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) said it had found nearly 3,000 AI-made abuse images that broke UK law.

The UK-based organisation said existing images of real-life abuse victims were being built into AI models, which then produce new depictions of them.

It added that the technology was also being used to create images of celebrities who have been "de-aged" and then depicted as children in sexual abuse scenarios. Other examples of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) included using AI tools to "nudify" pictures of clothed children found online.

The IWF had warned in the summer that evidence of AI-made abuse was starting to emerge but said its latest report had shown an acceleration in use of the technology. Susie Hargreaves, the chief executive of the IWF, said the watchdog's "worst nightmares have come true".

A group of friends are missing after a deep sea fishing excursion off the coast of Georgia - sparking a frantic search by the US Coast Guard 80 miles offshore.

The trio - identified last week as Dalton Conway, Caleb Wilkinson, and Tyler Barlow - have been lost since October 14, after their 31-foot vessel failed to moor in Brunswick this past Thursday as planned.

Nearly a week later, family and friends have still not heard a word - with the Coast Guard now calling the search 'complicated' because of the limited information it has received regarding the crew's prospective whereabouts.

Tyson Foods to bring bug-based protein to US markets after partnering with 'world leader in insect ingredients'

Tyson logo
Tyson Foods has announced that it will be partnering with Protix, a Dutch company that brands itself as the "world leader in insect ingredients," to foster "more sustainable protein production."

Via a direct equity investment, the American food giant will acquire a minority stake in Protix, and eventually create an "insect ingredient facility" to manufacture bug-based protein in the United States.

In an October 17 statement, Tyson Foods revealed:
"When the proposed plant is completed, it will be the first at-scale facility of its kind to upcycle food manufacturing byproducts into high-quality insect proteins and lipids which will primarily be used in the pet food, aquaculture, and livestock industries."
Chief Financial Officer John Tyson said:
"Our partnership with Protix represents the latest strategic investment by Tyson Foods in groundbreaking solutions that drive added value to Tyson Foods' business. The insect lifecycle provides the opportunity for full circularity within our value chain, strengthening our commitment to building a more sustainable food system for the future."

An off-duty pilot accused of trying to shut off the engines on a packed-out Alaska Airlines passenger jet on Sunday has been charged with 83 counts of attempted murder.

Joseph David Emerson, 44, faces the litany of homicide charges along with an additional 83 counts of reckless endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft, police documents show.

Emerson is believed to have sat in the jump seat beside the operating pilot on board a Embraer 175 plane flying from Everett in suburban Seattle to San Francisco.

He is accused of attempting to deploy the fire suppression system before crew members managed to 'subdue' him and remove him from the controls, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Alaska Airlines said the flight, which departed Washington state at 5:23pm, was diverted to Portland International Airport following the 'security threat'.

Two dozen American military personnel were wounded last week in a series of drone attacks at American bases in Iraq and Syria, U.S. Central Command told NBC News on Tuesday.

The Pentagon confirmed the attacks last week, but the number of U.S. casualties has not been previously disclosed.

Twenty American personnel sustained minor injuries on Oct. 18 when at least two one-way attack drones targeted al-Tanf military base in southern Syria, CENTCOM said.
