Moscow student posts selfie of himself standing over slain teacher's corpse
Moscow police are investigating a potential murder, after an 18-year-old vocational college student reportedly knifed his teacher during a lecture break, put the photos up on social media, and then slit his own throat.

The student, Andrey Emeliannikov, and his health & safety class teacher, Sergey Danilov, had a personal falling out, according to police sources speaking to TASS, though it is unclear if the throat-slitting was premeditated or impulsive.

According to one report, Emeliannikov had skipped lectures for a fortnight before, being confronted over his truancy by Danilov.TASS added that a video, which could serve as evidence in the investigation has been found on the teenager's mobile phone.

New York hit-and-run suspect Sayfullo Saipov being investigated for links to terrorism (hint: they won't find any)

manhattan car incident
Details are emerging about the man who deliberately plowed down pedestrians in New York City in what authorities described as an act of terror. At least eight people died and at least 13 people, including the suspect, were injured.

CBS News' justice and homeland security correspondent Jeff Pegues reports from Washington that the New York attack suspect, 29-year-old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, is a truck driver and has known addresses in both New Jersey and Florida. Saipov doesn't have an extensive criminal background, Pegues reports, with CBS News only finding about four traffic tickets in his past.

An Uber spokesperson confirmed to CBS News that Saipov was a driver for them and had passed a background check. He has been banned from the app. Uber has been in contact with the FBI and law enforcement.

The FBI and NYPD are no doubt looking into Saipov's background, Pegues adds. Investigators believe Saipov, who arrived in the U.S. from Uzbekistan in 2010, was acting as a "lone wolf" and not part of a wider terror plot.

Comment: By all means, investigate.

Or you could save yourselves the trouble; it's just a lone nutter.

Which isn't to make light of the horror of it. Sadly, this kind of thing is now all-too-common in these 'interesting times'.

Just 6 months ago, something similar happened nearby.

If you want to talk about a terror attack in the US, talk about the Las Vegas massacre. That was obviously carried out by an large organization with international reach and bent on destroying America and anyone else that gets in its way...

New survey says 97% Norwegian Muslims support equality between the sexes, critics slam results as 'wishful thinking'

muslims europe
The most comprehensive study of Muslims in Norway found 97 percent fully support equality of the sexes. One third of those surveyed also expressed support for following sharia law - though not all are convinced by the results.

Results of the study are contained in "Who Speaks for Us?" - a recently-published book by Norwegian Muslim feminist author Bushra Ishaq. In conjunction with a number of fellow professionals, Ishaq devised the survey, which was distributed to Muslims who had lived in the Nordic country for more than five years.

Some 845 respondents, aged between 18 and 75, answered questions on a number of divisive topics such as human rights, terrorism and radicalization, democracy and the role of women in society between autumn 2015 and spring 2016.

A newly formed free-speech society at Sussex University failed in its mission at the first hurdle, as its initial guest, a United Kingdom Independence Party (Ukip) member, was prevented from speaking amid concerns that he breached a 'safe space' policy.

The Liberate to Debate society, however, had to postpone MEP Bill Etheridge's speech after the university's students' union asked to read it beforehand so it could be tailored to comply with the institute's policies.

Over a million British households must choose between food or heating this winter

elderly heating
More than a million vulnerable UK households will be forced to choose to eat or heat their homes this winter, new research has found.

And soaring energy prices mean 29 per cent of the adult population are worried they will have to go without gas or electricity altogether as the temperature plummets.

Almost half (46 per cent) will reduce their heating use, rising to 53 per cent for those with children. Four per cent of people are prepared to forgo hot meals in order to save money on utility bills, rising to 13 per cent of those not in full time work.

The problem is even more severe for the most vulnerable such as pensioners and the parents of young children, which make up the bulk of the 1.1 million households facing the 'eat or heat' dilemma.

Hot showers and baths will be rationed by 52 per cent of the elderly and 36 per cent of households with children.

Assange: Manhattan attack would not have happened if CIA 'spent less time' arming terrorists

Assange

WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange slammed the CIA, saying the deadly terrorist attack in New York overnight might not have happened if the agency investigated terrorists instead of training and arming them.

"If the CIA spent more time investigating terrorists and less time training and arming them we might not have had today's truck attack in New York," the whistleblower tweeted following the attack in lower Manhattan that left eight people dead and a dozen injured on Tuesday.

The suspect, reportedly identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, an Uzbekistan native, drove a rented truck onto a bike path near the World Trade Center memorial, striking several pedestrians and cyclists. The vehicle did not stop until it hit a school bus, then the suspect left his vehicle holding two "imitation firearms" and shouting "Allahu Akbar." He was shot by police officers before being taken into custody.

The suspect reportedly had a note in his truck that said he committed the attack on behalf of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), law enforcement told NBC News.

The wife of a Chechen man accused by Russian authorities of plotting to assassinate President Vladimir Putin has been killed in an ambush near Kyiv.

Adam Osmayev said he and his wife, Amina Okuyeva, were traveling in a car on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital on October 30 when a vehicle began chasing them. The car was shot at and Okuyeva was hit in the head, Osmayev told the Ukrainian news portal lb.ua after the shooting.

Osmayev, who was injured in the attack, said he believed the attackers meant to kill both of them, and accused Russia of orchestrating the attack.

Interior Ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko earlier said that Okuyeva died and that her husband was injured when their car was hit by a hail of bullets while crossing a railroad track.

Parents outraged and disgusted after school installs cameras in student bathrooms to prevent bullying

Would you let your teenage self be filmed while using a school toilet? That is the question being asked of pupils at Summerhill School in Kingswinford, England after senior teachers decided to install cameras in toilets to combat bullying.

The installation has led to pupils to avoid using the facilities, lest they be recorded spending (at least) a penny. Meanwhile, livid parents have said they are "disgusted" at the surveillance, branding the scheme "wrong," and wondering who has access to the recordings.

"Following some disappointing behaviour from our students, who were not maintaining our high standards of behaviour whilst in the toilet areas, we took the decision to extend the network of cameras to these areas," wrote James Bowkett, head teacher at the school.

Comment: Directed at 'sensitive areas' or not, it's completely baffling to see how adults responsible for the welfare of children could think that cameras in bathrooms is a good idea. The state-surveillance mind has reached the extreme, and these people have clearly lost the plot!

Serial killer arrested in Tokyo after search for missing 23-year-old woman turns up dismembered bodies, severed heads in apartment (UPDATE)

In a horror story worthy of Halloween, Tokyo police have arrested a man after finding severed body parts of at least nine victims in the bathroom of his apartment. The dismembered pieces were stored in a cooler and covered with cat litter.

The gruesome discovery was made in Zama city, some 40km from Tokyo, the Metropolitan Police Department in Tokyo said, as cited by the local media on Tuesday.

Police were searching the apartment of 27-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi in connection with the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman, who was reportedly seeking an accomplice for the purpose of a suicide pact. After checking coolers and storage boxes in the apartment, police found severed body parts - including heads, legs and arms - belonging at least nine people. Eight of the victims were women, police added.

"I severed the body in my apartment and put it in a cooler. I did so to conceal evidence that I killed the person," the suspect told police, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported.

Comment: Police say Shiraishi has confessed to 9 murders. When they first arrived at his apartment and asked about the missing woman, he told them, "she is in here", and pointed to the cooler box. He also confessed that he tried to hide evidence.
Media reports quoted investigative sources as saying Shiraishi started killing as soon as he moved into his apartment in late August.

His first victim was another woman whom he got in touch with via Twitter, offering to assist her suicide wish, then killing her boyfriend to silence him, according to the media reports, including NHK public television.

They said Shiraishi used similar tactics to kill seven other women, four of them teenagers.
...
Shiraishi threw out some of the body parts as rubbish, along with the victims' belongings, reports said.
...
The woman's brother reported her disappearance to police the next day.

When he sought information about his sister's disappearance on Twitter, an unidentified woman replied that she had met Shiraishi and agreed to cooperate with police by setting up a fake appointment.

Two investigators then followed Shiraishi back to his apartment and knocked on the door, public broadcaster NHK said.

When they asked him if he knew where the missing woman was, Shiraishi pointed to one of eight coolers, saying "She is in here", NHK said, quoting investigative sources.
