Why has the operation to free ISIS-held Mosul stalled

Iraqi troops in Mosul
As predicted, ISIS has not abandoned Mosul and is resisting fiercely whilst the US-led Iraqi coalition offensive stalls.

On 21st October 2016, I wrote an article for The Duran in which I expressed my doubts that the recapture of Mosul from ISIS would take place as quickly as many expected.

At that time there was a widespread view that a deal had been struck in secret between the US and ISIS whereby ISIS would quickly withdraw from Mosul - allowing the US and its Iraqis allies to capture the city before the US Presidential election - and would redeploy to Syria, where it would attack the Syrian army as part of the US's plan for regime change in Syria.

'Technical glitch' closure: Amnesty International to return to Moscow office

The Russian branch of Amnesty International will soon return to its Moscow office after renewing the rent on the premises with City Hall. Staff had been prevented from entering the office for around two weeks because of a "technical glitch."

"Due to the help from [the head of the Russian Presidential Council for Human Rights] Mikhail Fedotov, we have managed to start a constructive dialogue with the property directorate of Moscow City Hall. I will sign a new contract today and I hope we will soon return to our office, where we have not been for 16 days," the head of the international human rights group's Russian branch, Sergey Nikitin, told TASS on Friday.

He added that the dispute with the Moscow authorities that had resulted in the branch's office being sealed off in early November had been caused by a technical malfunction, but did not elaborate.

On November 2 this year, Nikitin told reporters that someone had broken into Amnesty International's central Moscow office and had then locked and sealed its doors, preventing staff from accessing their workplace and collecting personal belongings. He emphasized that Amnesty had paid the rent on time and in full, and said he couldn't understand the reasons behind the developments.

Flashback Breitbart News: Founded for and by Israel?

breitbart israel
Breitbart founders with Netanyahu
A lot of people don't realize this but Breitbart News Network really got its start in Jerusalem. It was the summer of 2007, and Andrew had been invited to tour Israel as part of a media junket. I agreed to tag along as his lawyer and best friend. What neither of us knew at the time was that the trip would change our lives and give us the inspiration for Breitbart News Network.

One night in Jerusalem, when we were getting ready for dinner, Andrew turned to me and asked if I would de-partner from the 800-person law firm where I was practicing and become business partners with him. He said he needed my help to create a media company. He needed my help to "change the world."

Perhaps it was because we were in such an historic place, or because I was energized by the courage of the Jewish people in the Holy Land, or maybe it was the alcohol at cocktail hour, but I said "yes."

Comment: Andrew Breitbart's Wikipedia page:
Breitbart was born in Los Angeles, California, on February 1, 1969.He was the adopted son of Gerald and Arlene Breitbart, a restaurant owner and banker respectively, and grew up in the affluent suburb of Brentwood, Los Angeles. He was raised Jewish; his adoptive mother had converted to Judaism when marrying his adoptive father. He attended Hebrew school and had a bar mitzvah. He said that his birth certificate indicated his biological father was a folk singer.

Andrew would remain proudly Jewish, although not always religiously observant. He would sing Hebrew songs at work, while also teasing his Orthodox Jewish colleagues for keeping a kosher diet. Breitbart later said of his profession: "I'm glad I've become a journalist because I'd like to fight on behalf of the Israeli people... And the Israeli people, I adore and I love."

Best of the Web: Three Green Berets training 'moderates' killed in Jordan by ISIS supporter - CIA 'ignored' multiple warnings

special forces
Green Berets Matthew Lewellen, Kevin McEnroe, and James Moriarty approached the Prince Faisal Airbase in Jordan in their vehicle along with one Jordanian military officer. They were assigned the IA mission, meaning inter-agency, as a part of the CIA's Timber Sycamore covert operation to train and arm so-called moderate Syrian rebels. At the gate there was an exchange of gunfire which Jordanian authorities have described as a "chain of unfortunate events." Amidst the bedlam at the gate, a Special Forces Team Sergeant confronted the shooter after failing to deescalate the attack. The Team Sergeant wounded the shooter during the firefight, who is now being held by the Jordanian government for questioning.

Initial reports were conflicted with each other, and a subsequent FBI investigation describes finding no trace of terrorist activity involved in the incident. At first the Jordanians claimed that one of the Special Forces soldiers opened fire at the gate unprovoked. A second story claimed that one of the Americans accidentally discharged his weapon leading to a confused firefight of mistaken identity. However, according to multiple sources inside Special Forces, the shooter conducted a deliberate and pre-planned assault on the 5th Special Forces Group members. Multiple sources confirmed that the shooter is an ISIS sympathizer. Lewellen, McEnroe, and Moriarty, who were in the process of transitioning back to the United States were killed, the Jordanian officer injured.

Comment: If this was a deliberate and planned attack, what was the motive? Was the attack simply directed against Americans in general, or were the three SF members deliberately targeted? If they were targeted, who gave the order, and why were they specifically targeted? If the reports of disaffection among the SF about what they are doing are true, what did these men know? And who gave the order for them to be targeted?

The CIA sounds very aware of what they're doing in Jordan and Turkey: training the next generation of jihadis. But special forces think they're supposed to be training 'rebels' and are rightfully feeling angry and betrayed. This is not what they signed up for. Unfortunately, the CIA's agenda is much different than what ordinary Americans, SF included, are led to believe.

The Saudi-led international coalition will start a 48-hour ceasefire in Yemen on Saturday, media report.

The truce will begin at noon (09:00 GMT) on Saturday, the Al Arabiya broadcaster said.

Comment: See also: Update: A Saudi border guard was killed by shelling at the Saudi - Yemen border shortly before a ceasefire entered into force.
"Private at Facilities Security Forces, Adel Bahlol Khardli, was exposed to fire from an unknown source, resulting in the martyrdom of him," the Interior Ministry's security spokesman said in statement, as quoted by Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Since March 2015, the Saudi-led coalition of mostly Persian Gulf countries has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request.
Both sides to the Yemeni conflict have violated the ceasefire in the first hour after it went into force, local media reported.
According to the Sky News Arabia television channel, the Houthi rebels shelled residential areas in the city of Taiz less than an hour after the ceasefire took force.

The Almayadeen television channel in turn reported that the coalition did not stop bombing rebel positions. According to the channel, the northern Harad region not far from the border with Saudi Arabia was hit by three airstrikes after 12:00 GMT.

There have been no statements on the issue from either side so far.

France's Marine Le Pen stands with Donbass, so I stand with her

Marine Le Pen
After a great deal of soul searching, I have decided that unlike her father, Marine Le Pen is on the right side of history and is right for France.

I concede that my initial hesitation in supporting Marine Le Pen was mainly due to the political reputation of her father. Her father seemed to glory in being on the wrong side of history in respect of the Second World War. His sympathies seemed to be not with the heroes of the 9th of May, but with the fascist regimes and their puppets in Europe who destroyed the lives of millions.

Jean-Marie Le Pen was and remains a nasty man whose nostalgia for the collaborationist Vichy French State remains unshaken. However, it is unfair and morally wrong to punish a child for the sins of the father. I admit that my hesitation with offering full support to Marine Le Pen was only because of this.

'Demonetization' of the Indian rupee explained

The great step toward the cashless and completely controlled economy is underway. It's a trial run for the process of demonetization itself. It causes counter-economic activity to come under bank scrutiny.

Indian Rupees

What the government giveth, the government taketh away. Like that money in your wallet. Do you really think it's yours? If so, the people of India would like to have a word with you.

Oh, haven't you heard? In case you missed the story during the din and clatter of the US sElection circus, all hell has broken loose in India.

It all started on November 8th, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise television address to the nation. As you might have guessed, this was no stale policy speech. Instead, Modi sent shockwaves through the country (and the region) by announcing that as of midnight that evening, existing 500 and 1000 rupee notes would no longer be accepted as legal tender. The tax cattle would have until December 30th to trade in their 500 and 1000 rupee notes at post offices and banks.

And just like that the bits of colored paper in everyone's wallets were revealed as...well, useless bits of colored paper.

Although this type of revelation would cause panic and chaos even in the most orderly of transitions, the way the Indian government has handled this event has made it that much worse. The list of rules, regulations, stipulations, stop-gap measures, withdrawal and exchange limits, deadlines and red tape involved in switching over to the newly-minted replacement 500 and 2000 rupee notes was enough to leave people in as much confusion as panic. At one point they even started marking people's index finger in indelible ink to prevent repeat money exchangers from clogging the lines at busy banks.

To put the scale of this move in perspective, note that the old 500 and 1000 rupee notes make up 86% of the cash in the Indian economy. And all that cash has just been stripped of its legal tender status with the flick of a bureaucratic switch.

So you can imagine (or, this being the age of the internet, you can actually watch) the scenes of violence, chaos, and public nudity(?) as tensions flare and people wait in unbelievable line ups to exchange their cash. And you can also imagine how the government is scrambling to make ad hoc adjustments to their ad hoc rules for dealing with the mess they created.

A leading Venezuelan diplomatic official has been taken into custody by authorities following a raid on his Caracas office last week.

Ricardo Moreno, North America director for the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry, was detained by agents of the National Bolivarian Intelligence Service (SEBIN) on November 10.

A resident in the United States for 20 years, Moreno is a widely respected Chavista activist with a long organizing track record in solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution.

As founder of the Los Angeles-based Simon Bolívar Association following the 2002 US-sponsored coup against the late former president Hugo Chávez, Moreno appeared widely in US Hispanic media debating with leading anti-Chavista figures, such as FEDECAMERAS President Carlos Fernandez and former US Under-Secretary of State Otto Reich.

The Syrian Army, supported by the country's National Defense Forces, is preparing for the beginning of a large-scale operation to sweep the militant-held eastern districts of Aleppo, according to RIA Novosti.

A large-scale military operation by the Syrian Army to drive the terrorists out of the eastern districts of Aleppo is due to kick off in northern Syria very soon, RIA Novosti reported.

According to Arab experts, up to 7,000 militants remain in Aleppo's eastern areas.

On Thursday, Syrian forces launched artillery strikes against fortified enemy positions in the neighborhoods of Tariq al-Bab, Salikhin, Shaar and Es Sukkar where the terrorists' first line of defense is deployed.

The shelling came as Syrian warplanes staged air strikes on the militants' logistical hubs in Khan al-Asal, Kafr Hamra and Haraytan.

In addition, the militants have lost much of their armored vehicles and off-road vehicles equipped with heavy machine guns.

Russia distances itself from the European Court of Human Rights and ICC

Vladamir Putin

As Russia pulls out of the International Criminal Court, steps taken by the Russian Constitutional and Supreme Courts in the cases of Yukos and Navalny show that Russia is detaching itself from the European Court of Human Rights as well.

Whilst it is Russia's decision to have no further connection to the International Criminal Court (ICC) which is attracting the most attention, two legal steps taken by Russia to distance the country from the European Court of Human Rights may be of greater practical significance.

Russia's Constitution - drafted by pro-Western liberals during the political crisis of 1993 - specifically provides Russian citizens the right to bring cases to international courts like the European Court of Human Rights. Since this is a right set out in Russia's Constitution, Russia is not in a position where it can simply quit the European Court of Human Rights, as some people wish it would do.
