A US special operations soldier has been killed and three others wounded in a surprise raid against Al-Qaeda militants in Yemen. Local officials say 41 Al-Qaeda militants, as well as 16 civilians, were killed in the attack.

A statement released by the US Central Command on Sunday said another service member was injured in a "hard landing" nearby. The aircraft was damaged as well, and was destroyed in place, the report said.

The US report said 14 Al-Qaeda fighters were killed in the assault. The raid is said to have provided "information that will likely provide insight into the planning of future terror plots."

Trump imposes lifetime ban on foreign government lobbying for appointees

US President Donald Trump holds an executive order
© Jonathan Ernst / ReutersUS President Donald Trump holds an executive order dealing with members of the administration lobbying foreign governments, after signing it in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, DC on Saturday.
As part of his promise to 'drain the swamp' US President Donald Trump has signed an 'ethics commitments' executive order restricting his administration officials from working as lobbyists after they leave government.

The order bans his appointees from lobbying any government official for two years and the agency they worked in for five years. It also prevents them from ever lobbying the US on behalf of a foreign government or foreign political parties.

The order is "solely enforceable by the United States by any legally available means." Anyone found violating the ban could be barred from lobbying their former agency for up to another five years, on top of the five-year period covered by the order.

Twitter publishes FBI national security letters following gag order lift

Twitter
Twitter has revealed it received two national security orders from the FBI, accompanied by gag orders, prohibiting the company from notifying the affected account holders or the general public about the process.

The company's Associate General Counsel for Global Law Enforcement, Elizabeth Banker, made the announcement in a statement after the FBI lifted the gag order.

Twitter says it has now provided each of the two account holders affected by the National Security Letters (NSL's) with copies of the relevant NSL's and details of the information they were ordered to produce.

The NSL's were served in September 2015 and June 2016 aand requested a large amount of data. However, the company only released a limited set of data "consistent with federal law and interpretive guidance from the U.S. Department of Justice," according to Banker.

The requests which have now been published by Twitter with some minor redactions sought the "name, address, length of service, and electronic communications transactional records for all services, as well as all accounts," and also directed Twitter not to "disable, suspend, lock, cancel or interrupt" service in case it would alert the user to the surveillance.

A Brooklyn judge issued an emergency stay, temporarily freezing the expulsion of travelers under the newly-signed executive order by President Donald Trump that covers 7 Arab nations, after a habeas corpus petition was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Judge Ann Donnelly of the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York issued the ruling after the American Union of Civil Liberties (ACLU) filed a legal challenge on behalf of two Iraqi immigrants, Hameed Khalid Darweesh and Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshawi.

Both were denied entry to the US after landing at the airports despite having valid visas. US President Donald Trump, US Department of Homeland Security and US Customs and Border Protection are listed among the respondents.

The emergency stay does not only apply to Darweesh and Alshawi, but will also temporarily forbid US authorities from deporting immigrants with valid travel documents who are stranded at airports across the US due to the Trump's order.

The order, signed the afternoon of January 28, calls for the Joint Chiefs of Staff to present the new president with a plan to defeat the terrorist organization in 30 days.

"I am directing my Administration to develop a comprehensive plan to defeat ISIS... The Plan shall include... identification of new coalition partners in the fight against ISIS and policies to empower coalition partners to fight ISIS and its affiliates," Trump said in a memorandum.

Trump campaigned on promises to defeat Daesh "in a month" and repeatedly suggested that the reason the fight had dragged out so long was that US military capabilities were being somehow hamstrung. In his first visit as president to CIA headquarters, he reiterated that "Radical Islamic terrorism... has to be eradicated. Just off the face of the Earth."

Russian President Vladimir Putin has had his first telephone conversation with newly inaugurated US President Donald Trump.

The start of the telephone call was announced by White House press secretary Sean Spicer in a twitter post.

The Kremlin released the following statement:
Vladimir Putin congratulated Donald Trump on taking office and wished him every success in his work.

During the conversation, both sides expressed their readiness to make active joint efforts to stabilise and develop Russia-US cooperation on a constructive, equitable and mutually beneficial basis.

Mr Putin and Mr Trump had a detailed discussion of pressing international issues, including the fight against terrorism, the situation in the Middle East, the Arab-Israeli conflict, strategic stability and non-proliferation, the situation with Iran's nuclear programme, and the Korean Peninsula issue. The discussion also touched upon the main aspects of the Ukrainian crisis. The sides agreed to build up partner cooperation in these and other areas.

The two leaders emphasised that joining efforts in fighting the main threat - international terrorism - is a top priority. The presidents spoke out for establishing real coordination of actions between Russia and the USA aimed at defeating ISIS and other terrorists groups in Syria.

The sides stressed the importance of rebuilding mutually beneficial trade and economic ties between the two counties' business communities, which could give an additional impetus to progressive and sustainable development of bilateral relations.

Mr Putin and Mr Trump agreed to issue instructions to work out the possible date and venue for their meeting.

Donald Trump asked to convey his wishes of happiness and prosperity to the Russian people, saying that the American people have warm feelings towards Russia and its citizens.

Vladimir Putin, in turn, emphasised that the feeling is mutual, adding that for over two centuries Russia has supported the United States, was its ally during the two world wars, and now sees the United States as a major partner in fighting international terrorism.

The two leaders agreed to maintain regular personal contacts.

The conversation took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere.
The White House released this statement:
"The positive call was a significant start to improving the relationship between the United States and Russia that is in need of repair. Both President Trump and President Putin are hopeful that after today's call the two sides can move quickly to tackle terrorism and other important issues of mutual concern."
At least there's at least one good thing to come out of Trump's first week in office!

Trump's First Week: What do his Policies and Personality Portend for the Future?

Trump oval office
My last article attempted to stay grounded in reality regarding the need to keep in check any expectation the Trump presidency will be any different from previous administrations, knowing whoever occupies the White House is simply the elite's figurehead puppet choice. Based on the rhetoric expressed in his inaugural address, the article title alone claiming "Trump has declared war on the ruling elite" already appears to be way off base from the actual truth.

Less than a week into office and the real Donald Trump presidency has already reared enough of its ugly head to reveal that his "vison" for America is soon to be every citizen's nightmare. No surprise really, as alluded to previously, this honeymoon phase accompanied by excessive expectation and wishful thinking fantasy surrounding each new president as he takes office is a longstanding yet always short lived phenomenon. Switching back and forth from one antithetical selection after the next, the opposite of George Bush was Barack Obama. Now the opposite of Barack Obama is Donald Trump. Here we go again. Different face and party, same policy. The elitist, divide and conquer rulers wouldn't have it any other way.

Comment: An argument can also be made that Trump's selections are part of a larger strategy - to get his people 'inside' a system that is largely against the type of policies he would like to implement. To do that, he needs people who are wittingly or unwittingly willing to look and sound like the established cast of beltway characters. But as with all else concerning Trump, we'll just have to wait and see.

This presentation will dissect actions already taken in Trump's first week as president that should give all of us citizens grave concern.

Vague Trump travel ban causes havoc in airports hours after implementation

More than a dozen people have been prevented from boarding flights to the US despite holding valid US visas while others have been detained in US airports, as airlines try to comply with new travel restrictions.

US President Donald Trump's executive orders halting all refugee entries and requiring any Syrian, Iraqi, Iranian, Sudanese, Libyan, Somalian or Yemeni to be turned away at the border for the next 90 days will have disastrous consequences for legal US residents outside the country for work or holiday travel. Perhaps 500,000 legal US residents could be essentially barred from traveling or refused reentry to the country under the new regulations.

The vague language of what is being called the "Muslim ban," which has it applying to all "aliens" from those seven countries, means it could affect even legal green card holders, who are legal residents but still technically "aliens."

American Jews will 'divorce' Israel if it is at peace

Abe Foxman said something very smart the other day. There is a "continuous crisis" between American Jews and Israeli Jews over fundamental value differences, from occupation to freedom of worship, he said. Does that mean there is a "divorce" between the communities? No, said the former head of the Anti Defamation League said.
No I don't think there's a divorce. As long as Israel is under threat, as long as Israel is not secure, there's not a divorce. Halevai [would that it were so] we come to the day when there is peace - and if there is peace - that's when you are going to deal with the issue of divorce.
The idea that Israel needs conflict in order to bind American Jews to it ties in with something the Israeli centrist politician Yair Lapid said at the same security conference at which Foxman spoke: Israel is now in a permanent war. "In this new world, in which we live, there is no longer any separation between days of peace and days of war."

Iraqi and French forces discover ISIS chemical weapons arsenal in Mosul

French and Iraqi forces have uncovered a mustard agent and missiles in an area formerly controlled by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) during a sweep of eastern Mosul.

The mustard agent was found in an abandoned storage area near the historic Nineveh ruins, AP reported, hoping to avoid attracting attention from locals.

In a warehouse 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away from the Tigris river, reporters were shown three large refrigerated cargo containers holding an unidentified substance hidden among piles of coal, which upon further analysis was found to be mustard agent. There was also more than a dozen surface-to-surface rockets bearing Russian inscriptions, according to AP.

"We know that they were using this place to experiment with chemical weapons," Iraqi special forces Brig. Gen. Haider Fadhil said.
