US House Speaker Paul Ryan said it was reasonable to try to mend ties with Russia, and opined Donald Trump was right to ask Michael Flynn to resign from the position of the national security adviser.

"New administrations these days try to get better relations with Russia...I understand it's reasonable and rational to try and improve relations with Russia," Ryan stated. "But I'll leave it up to the administration to describe the circumstances surrounding what brought this point."

Ryan made these comments while responding to questions about the resignation of US National Security Advisor Michael Flynn on Monday night.

"So I think the president was right to ask for his resignation and I believe it was the right thing to do," Ryan said in a press briefing.

Best of the Web: Pepe Escobar: Flynn Resignation - The Swamp Strikes Back

michael flynn

The tawdry Michael Flynn soap opera boils down to the CIA hemorrhaging leaks to the company town newspaper, leading to the desired endgame: a resounding victory for hardcore neocon/neoliberalcon US Deep State factions in one particular battle. But the war is not over; in fact it's just beginning.

Even before Flynn's fall, Russian analysts had been avidly discussing whether President Trump is the new Viktor Yanukovych — who failed to stop a color revolution at his doorstep. The Made in USA color revolution by the axis of Deep State neocons, Democratic neoliberalcons and corporate media will be pursued, relentlessly, 24/7. But more than Yanukovych, Trump might actually be remixing Little Helmsman Deng Xiaoping: "crossing the river while feeling the stones". Rather, crossing the swamp while feeling the crocs.

Flynn out may be interpreted as a Trump tactical retreat. After all Flynn may be back — in the shade, much as Roger Stone. If current deputy national security advisor K T McFarland gets the top job - which is what powerful Trump backers are aiming at - the shadowplay Kissinger balance of power, in its 21st century remix, is even strengthened; after all McFarland is a Kissinger asset.

House Intelligence Committee wants to investigate leaks that led to Flynn's resignation

The House Intelligence Committee wants a probe into the leaks of phone talks between Michael Flynn and the Russian ambassador, asking why a US national security adviser was recorded by the FBI and why press was briefed ahead of the White House.

"I want to hear from the FBI as to how this got out," Devin Nunes, the California Republican who heads the committee, told reporters on Tuesday, as reported by CNN. "We don't even know if this is true. We just know this from press reports."

Later in the day, he said the FBI must explain the situation surrounding Flynn, "and they better have a good answer," as cited by the Washington Post. "The big problem I see here is that you have an American citizen who had his phone calls recorded."

According to the newspaper, Nunes was outraged that the recordings have been leaked, citing a complex procedure of intercepting communications involving US nationals citizens and then "unmasking" it for intelligence purposes.

Flynn resigned on Monday night after it emerged that he misinformed senior administration officials about the content of his phone conversations with Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak.

The Russians are coming! Hours after nat'l security adviser quits, Russian spy ship "spotted" off US coast

A Russian spy ship has reportedly been spotted by officials just 70 miles of the U.S. East Coast for the first time since President Donald Trump took office — and just hours after National Security Adviser Michael Flynn resigned from his position less than one month on the job amid controversy over a phone call with the Russian ambassador.

Two unnamed U.S. officials from an undivulged department allegedly told Fox News the Russian ship was seen 70 miles of the coast of Delaware, heading north at 10 knots — well outside United States territorial waters, which extend 12 nautical miles from the coast.

"It's not a huge concern, but we are keeping our eyes on it," one official said.

According to Fox News,
"The ship, the SSV-175 Viktor Leonov, last sailed near the U.S. in April 2015, an official said. The ship is capable of intercepting communications or signals, known as SIGINT, as well as measuring U.S. Navy sonar capability, a separate official said.

"The Russian spy ship is also armed with surface-to-air missiles."

Comment: Boy oh boy! Those 'reality creators' in the Pentagon, CIA and their aligned media puppets have sure been busy lately. Still though, even if the story of the Russian ship were true, the quoted section from the Zero Hedge article would seem to underscore an important point:
Needless to say, the US navy - and Pentagon - were quite displeased: after all it is only Russia that is allowed to be surrounded by NATO forces."
... but this story can, unfortunately, be spun by the deep state to suggest that the Russians are spying, invading, etc. when really it may be more like a message being sent to the empire: "we can surround you too - stop pushing us the heck around!!

Propaganda

Myths, fakes and NATO's easy ride with mainstream media

NATO's latest attack on freedom of thought was unquestioningly embraced by mainstream media - in unwitting service of "fake news."

During the 2016 US Presidential election, the term "fake news" escaped the media bubble to become the buzzword of the year. Intended as the "proper" media's expository and damning attack on dodgy sources that attract attention with shocking yet untrue headlines, it quickly morphed into a shorthand for anything and everything that went against the establishment's narrow range of approved narratives. Clinton - good, Russia - evil, that sort of thing.

More NY Times #Fakenews: Trump Campaign Aides Have Links to Russian Intelligence - Kremlin Calls Claims "Laughable"

Phone records and intercepted calls show that members of Donald J. Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and other Trump associates had repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the election, according to four current and former American officials.

American law enforcement and intelligence agencies intercepted the communications around the same time they were discovering evidence that Russia was trying to disrupt the presidential election by hacking into the Democratic National Committee, three of the officials said. The intelligence agencies then sought to learn whether the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians on the hacking or other efforts to influence the election.

The officials interviewed in recent weeks said that, so far, they had seen no evidence of such cooperation.

But the intercepts alarmed American intelligence and law enforcement agencies, in part because of the amount of contact that was occurring while Mr. Trump was speaking glowingly about the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin. At one point last summer, Mr. Trump said at a campaign event that he hoped Russian intelligence services had stolen Hillary Clinton's emails and would make them public.

The officials said the intercepted communications were not limited to Trump campaign officials, and included other associates of Mr. Trump. On the Russian side, the contacts also included members of the government outside of the intelligence services, they said. All of the current and former officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because the continuing investigation is classified.

Comment: Yes, the investigation is classified and the evidence as well. The evidence HAS to be classified, because it doesn't exist! This story is merely another piece of propaganda meant to demonize Russia and the Trump Administration planted by the Establishment who want more than anything to stop US rapprochement with Russia.

The Kremlin responded by making it clear that they see right through the efforts of the Establishment:
"Those reports are not based on concrete facts," Dmitry Peskov stressed on Wednesday, noting "there are five different sources in the story and none is named. So you see, really laughable stories are now given a go."

The Russian president's spokesman added, "Let's not just believe the press. It's difficult lately tell the real deal from fakes and hoaxes," referring to reports in the New York Times and on CNN which cited anonymous US sources as saying that several people close to President Donald Trump had communicated with Russian intelligence officers during the presidential campaign.

[...]

"It's common tactic to discredit a person," Senator Vladimir Dzhabarov told RIA Novosti, commenting on expose stories run by the New York Times and CNN, adding that it's a continuation of the same campaign that forced Michael Flynn's resignation as National Security Advisor earlier.

"Trump should realize that the real target of such leaks is him. Unless the American president puts an end to this witch-hunt and stops surrendering his people, this will all end bad. The final goal of his enemies is to impeach the president," he added.

Chief EU diplomat: Polarized and divided US could destabilize entire world

The US, polarized and divided as never before, could become a destabilizing factor for the rest of the globe unless it stays "domestically strong and united," Federica Mogherini warned after her first meeting with the Trump administration in Washington.

"I have never seen the US so polarized, divided and burdened by conflicts as now. However, the one who would like to play a global leadership role needs to be internally strong, self-confident and cohesive," the chief of EU diplomacy told Die Welt on Wednesday.

Mogherini maintained that the current developments in the US will surely have ramifications on international stability.

"If the greatest democracy in the world is beset with tensions of such scale, then it becomes a destabilizing factor for the rest of the globe," she said.

Her interview to Die Welt and leading European newspapers came on the heels of her recent visit to Washington where she met with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, then-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump's aide and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as some other top administration officials.

Almost 64 percent of Germans don't wish to see Angela Merkel reelected as Chancellor, a poll conducted by YouGov has found. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats (SPD) are shooting ahead in the polls, despite predictions that their popularity was on the wane.

The poll published on Monday shows that, of the two-thirds of Germans dissatisfied with Merkel, 42 percent strongly want her out, while 22 percent said it was "probably" a good idea to elect a new leader.

Conversely, 19 percent said it was "probably best" to stick with her to avoid a change in leadership in the foreseeable future, while only 8 percent strongly wanted to see her reelected as Chancellor.

Game-Changer? China will soon receive S-400 missile systems from Russia

Rostec State Corporation Director for International Cooperation Victor Kladov says that production of the S-400 Triumf anti-aircraft systems slated for China is already underway. Speaking to Radio Sputnik, military expert Oleg Ponomorenko explained why the cutting-edge missile systems will be a game changer for the Chinese military.

On Tuesday, speaking to reporters at the Aero India 2017 international exhibition in Bengaluru, Kladov confirmed that the China-bound S-400 missile systems are currently in the manufacturing stage. "Right now, there is an operating contract signed with China for the supply of S-400 systems, [and] they are in the production phase," the company official said.

Kladov added that "a number of countries have expressed interest" in the Russian-made air defense system, but stressed that "production capacity is limited."

Last June, Rostec General Director Sergei Shemezov said that the S-400s slated for China would be delivered no earlier than 2018, adding that the first priority was to arm Russia's own military. China has officially confirmed the purchase of at least three regiments (six divisions) of S-400s for its air defense forces. Each division consists of eight launchers, 112 missiles, as well as the necessary command and support vehicles.

'Kremlin agent' Trump tells Russia: 'Return Crimea to Ukraine' - Update: Zakharova responds - "We don't return our terrorities"

US President Donald Trump has been tough on Russia and expects Moscow to "return" the Crimea peninsula to Ukraine, the White House spokesman told reporters. Addressing the resignation of National Security Adviser Michael Flynn - hounded by the media over his contacts with Russian diplomats prior to Trump's inauguration - Spicer pointed out that Russia "seized" Crimea under the Obama administration and that the Trump-appointed ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has "strongly denounced the Russian occupation."

"President Trump has made it very clear that he expects the Russian government to de-escalate violence in the Ukraine and return Crimea," Spicer said at the daily news briefing on Tuesday. "At the same time, he fully expects to - and wants to - get along with Russia."

"Crimea is a part of Ukraine. Our Crimea-related sanctions will remain in place until Russia returns control of the peninsula to Ukraine," Haley said at the UN Security Council meeting on February 2.

Comment: That's quite disingenuous. Crimea only became part of Ukraine after WWII. And as we all know, Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to rejoin Russia after Madam Nuland launched her dirty little coup and the Ukrainian Neo-Nazis started trying to persecute the country's Russian population

Russian envoy Vitaly Churkin responded by citing the US Constitution and pointing out that Crimeans overwhelmingly voted to join Russia, after the US-backed coup in February 2014 overthrew the elected government in Kiev.

Comment: First, Nikki Haley condemned Russia at the UN and called for Russia to 'end it's occupation' of Crimea, then Flynn resigns, and now the White House makes an official statement about Crimea. Seems the Deep State has been busy demolishing hopes of any restoration of sane relations with Russia.

Update: Maria Zakharova put a swift end to any speculation that Russia would capitulate to Trump by making it very clear that Crimea is "our land":
