New cracks in the Russia-gate 'assessment'

Former CIA Director John Brennan

At the center of the Russia-gate scandal is a curious U.S. intelligence "assessment" that was pulled together in less than a month and excluded many of the agencies that would normally weigh in on such an important topic as whether Russia tried to influence the outcome of a U.S. presidential election.

The Jan. 6 report and its allegation that Russia "hacked" Democratic emails and publicized them through WikiLeaks have been treated as gospel by the mainstream U.S. media and many politicians of both parties, but two senior Obama administration intelligence officials have provided new information that raises fresh doubts about the findings.

On Tuesday, former CIA Director John Brennan told the House Intelligence Committee that only four of the 17 U.S. intelligence agencies took part in the assessment, relying on analysts from the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the oversight of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

On Monday, the Russian newspaper Sovershenno Sekretno ("Top Secret") published copies of secret documents allegedly proving that Ukrainian security services hid and destroyed evidence of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash in 2014.

The airliner crashed in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbass on July 17, 2014, while en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam. All 298 passengers and the crew members aboard the aircraft died in the incident.

According to the newspaper, the copies were obtained from an unnamed source. The newspaper also said that it cannot confirm or disprove the authenticity of the documents. The report claims that the original document was issued by the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) on April 20, 2014, three days after the crash.

Following a meeting with US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Washington has pledged to give the country's missile defense program $75 million, as a sign of Washington's continued commitment to the Jewish state.

During a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War, Netanyahu emphasized the importance of US aid to Israel maintaining military dominance in the region.

Netanyahu said, "We just finished the visit of US President Trump, the president of our biggest ally," according to Jerusalem Online. "Three days ago, the US added to the aid package another $75 million for our missile defense program. We appreciate this aid and important support very much and yet I'd like to stress this again โ€” history has shown that Israel's security is dependent on our ability to defend ourselves with our own forces against every threat."

Comment: How the heck can you spout bringing two grossly unequal sides together when you have just given the bully another $75M? No arm-twisted bias there!

FISA court: NSA violated search restrictions and spied on Americans

Intelligence agencies under former President Barack Obama routinely violated privacy rights, conducted illegal searches and gathered information on US citizens, according to a FISA court that called their conduct "a very serious Fourth Amendment issue."

Earlier this month, the Director of National Intelligence released a court order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that found illegal searches of American citizens conducted by the National Security Agency (NSA) may have violated privacy rights. The court order came from a hearing on October 26, just before former President Barack Obama left office.

Under section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), the intelligence community is authorized to target the communications of non-citizens located outside the US for foreign intelligence purposes. However, the agency is supposed to be kept in check by multiple layers of oversight.

Comment: How diligent and honorable will the NSA be at keeping its 'promises' when it consistently and deliberately infracts mandated guidelines until someone blows the whistle? To read the NSA's statement of changes, go here.

A Chinese woman has been charged with conspiracy to smuggle over $100,000 worth of highly sensitive, military-grade space communications technology out of the US to Hong Kong.

Si Chen, also known as 'Cathy Chen' or 'Chunping Ji,' 32, has been charged with conspiracy, money laundering, making false statements on an immigration application, and using a forged passport as part of the 14-count indictment filed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

The indictment for her arrest was returned by a federal grand jury on April 27 and was unsealed following her arrest on Tuesday.

Chen allegedly shipped the technology, which included components used in military communications jammers, to Hong Kong under the alias 'Chunping Ji,' with fake descriptions and monetary valuations placed on the goods between March 2013 and December 2015.

Nadia Savchenko, a former military helicopter navigator who entered politics after returning home following two years in a Russian jail, says the Justice Ministry is ignoring her request to register her new political movement.

Savchenko spoke at a news conference on May 25, exactly a year after she was released in a prisoner exchange and days after telling Polish news outlet Krytyka Polityczna that she is "ready to take responsibility for the country and run for president" in 2019.

Savchenko had planned to present her new political force, the Sociopolitical Platform of Hope Savchenko. But she said that "the Justice Ministry...without providing any comments or explanations, without answering any appeals, requests, phone calls, has not registered the party."

Brazil sinking deeper into crisis as its unelected President faces corruption charges

Brazilian protester
Deepening political and economic crisis in Brazil exposes the folly of last summer's impeachment of Dilma Rousseff - the country's democratically elected leader - on obviously concocted charges.

Back on 29th August 2016 I wrote an article for The Duran in which I said that the pending impeachment of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was a disaster for Brazil, removing from office a President who for all her mistakes had been democratically elected and was not corrupt, and replacing her with Michel Temer, an appointed President who would inevitably be compromised by the grossly partisan method of his appointment through a flawed impeachment process orchestrated by a corrupt and self-seeking elite.

I also pointed out that the ostensible reason for impeaching Rousseff - that her government had engaged in an illegal budget maneuver during Brazil's recession - would convince no one since it was all too obviously not the real reason for Rousseff's impeachment but rather an excuse for it, the true reason being the wish of a corrupt right wing elite to remove form office a President who was both left wing and not corrupt.
