Al Jazeera: Leaked emails show relationship between UAE and Israeli-linked think tanks

As tensions between Qatar and the Saudi-led block grow, the sides use more and more diplomatic and media tools each against others.

The Qatari state-run media outlet Al Jazeera released a lare article based on leaked emails revealing the hidden Emirati diplomacy in the Middle East.

Comment: If the email innuendo worked so well in the US for sloppy politicians...copy, adapt and apply. Does Israel benefit in picking off ME regimes one-by-one? And, who would you think has the 'dirt' on each and every source it needs to mastermind this level of disruption?

According to Al-Jazeera:
Otaiba is a well-known figure in US national security circles - he has been called "the most charming man in Washington" - and has participated in Pentagon strategy meetings at the invitation of defence officials.

...the emails, released by a group called "Global Leaks", show a close relationship between al-Otaiba and a pro-Israel, neoconservative think-tank - the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD). The hacked emails, some of which date back to 2014, reveal a high level of backchannel cooperation between the FDD, which is funded by pro-Israel billionaire Sheldon Adelson, and the UAE.

They also appear to show clear collaboration between the FDD and the UAE on a campaign to downgrade the image and importance of Qatar as a regional and global power, including collusion with journalists who have published articles accusing Qatar and Kuwait of supporting "terrorism". ...the emails support previous allegations "that there is a growing axis between some of the Gulf countries, like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and Israel".

The agenda includes in-depth discussions specifically on Qatar, including Qatar-based Al Jazeera, and its links to the Muslim Brotherhood. One item on the agenda is: "Al Jazeera as an instrument of regional instability". "They actually discussed recasting Al Jazeera as a disruptive network, a network that is causing instability and chaos, rather than recognised good journalism".

A large portion of the emails focus on "U.S./UAE policies to positively impact Iranian internal situation" and to "contain and defeat Iranian aggression." In early March, Dubowitz [CEO of FDD] emailed Otaiba a list of non-US businesses operating in Saudi Arabia or the UAE "looking to invest in Iran. This is a target list for putting these companies to a choice, as we have discussed," Dubowitz wrote.

Hearst, of the Middle East Eye, told Al Jazeera he believed the leaked emails showed a clear "agenda" by ruling figures in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt. They have "seized" on Donald Trump's presidency in the US, "and now they're using him as a way of getting the job done, which includes getting rid of Al Jazeera... and also muffling Qatar".

No surprise: The Israeli army enters the conversion business

Several Israeli Defense Forces conscripts have recently reported that they have ordered to appear in a ceremony where they were told they need to undergo a giur (conversion to Judaism) and that the IDF would graciously provide them with this service. All of the conscripts are defined by the Israeli Interior Ministry as either Christians or lacking religious affiliation.

The IDF said in response that the purpose of the ceremony is to "strengthen the feeling of belonging of immigrant soldiers and their children to the State of Israel and the IDF." The military admitted the conscripts are forced to participate: "the soldiers who answer to the criteria are invited to an orientation ceremony about the [giur] course, a ceremony to which the soldier must report, so as to have the ability to take a reasoned decision about his willingness to participate in the plan. A soldier who decides at the end of the ceremony to give up the course will not be invited to the next conference and the [conversion] process regarding him will be halted. Should a soldier decide to participate in the plan, but would [later] decide to disengage, he would have the right to do so at any time."

While Israel promotes itself as a democracy, even a liberal one, it is essential to understand that this is simply not the case when it comes to personal and religious rights in Israel. While a citizen of a Western country is identified by his citizenship, the concept of citizenship is an afterthought in Israel. As far as the Israeli government and courts are concerned, there are no Israelis: attempts to be defined as such are stricken down time and again. The Interior Ministry uses the millet system, inherited from the Ottomans, as the basis of organizing society.

Comment: Israel is worried that the IDF numbers for enlistments are going down: estimates for the year 2020 are at 46% of the population, less than half. In 1990 the enlistments were 70%. The correlation to religion factors highly in this decline. A way for haredi yeshiva students to bypass the inscription is to claim "Torato Omanuto" or Torah Study. The 'national religious' have no choice to dodge the draft. With the kinds of policies and paranoia that drives Israel, every soldier they can lock down, even if he/she is not per se Israeli, is crucial.

The US Navy says it has conducted strikes against Islamic State targets from an aircraft carrier in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

The George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group "resumed strike missions in support of Operation Inherent Resolve," the Navy said in a news release.

The carrier entered the Mediterranean on June 5 and had previously conducted Operation Inherent Resolve strikes from the eastern Mediterranean in early March, according to the Navy.

"We are resuming a relentless pursuit of ISIS targets, while reinforcing our commitment to partners and allies in the US 6th Fleet area of operations," said Rear Admiral Kenneth Whitesell, commander of Carrier Strike Group 2.

Boris Johnson's blatant hypocrisy: 'We need help rooting out those who fund terrorism'

Boris Johnson

Britain must work with other countries to root out those funding terrorism in the UK, whether revenue streams are provided with the knowledge of allied governments or not, said Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

His comments came as the Home Office admitted an investigation commissioned by former Prime Minister David Cameron into the funding behind jihadist groups operating in Britain may never be published.

It is understood the report focuses on British ally Saudi Arabia, which has been repeatedly highlighted by European leaders as a funding source for Islamist extremists, and may prove politically and legally sensitive.

Speaking to reporters in Newcastle on Tuesday, Johnson said he could not comment on the confidential document, according to Reuters.

Comment: The solution isn't complicated. Stop writing checks to Saudi Arabia!

Massachusetts judge allows right-to-die lawsuit to move forward

A Massachusetts judge ruled that two doctors may move forward with a lawsuit seeking an order that the state's murder and manslaughter laws do not apply to physicians who offer lethal medications to terminally ill patients.

Superior Court Judge Mary Ames in Boston in a ruling last week declined to dismiss the lawsuit by the doctors, one of whom is suffering from cancer, who argued a cloud of uncertainty was preventing physicians from providing such medications.

The doctors have proven there is a controversy regarding the law that is worth the court's time to consider, Ames said in the decision, noting that she had not yet made a determination on the merits of their argument.

The lawsuit aims to include Massachusetts among states such as Oregon, Washington, Vermont, California and Colorado and the District of Columbia that allow physicians to provide aid in dying, according to right-to-die advocates.

The Massachusetts ruling was in response to a lawsuit by Roger Kligler, a retired doctor diagnosed with stage-four prostate cancer, and Alan Steinbach, a physician who says he is willing to write prescriptions for lethal medication but fears prosecution.

Deployment of the US anti-missile system in South Korea is facing a setback after the new government ordered a full-scale environmental impact probe. President Moon Jae-in is a vocal critic of the previous government's decision to host the THAAD system.

"The order to conduct an environmental impact assessment is a guideline to enhance the procedural legitimacy of the deployment, so the defense ministry will review ways to conduct such a study," South Korean Defense Minister Han Min-koo said on Tuesday, as cited by Yonhap News Agency.

The probe may take up to a year and delay the ongoing deployment of the system, Yonhap says.

No bias here: BBC presenter confesses broadcaster ignores complaints of bias

Evan Davis

BBC Newsnight host Evan Davis has admitted that although his employer receives thousands of complaints about alleged editorial bias, producers do not act on them at all.

"All the time we get those [bias accusation] emails. And honestly, no one at the BBC takes those kinds of things into account," the journalist said during a talk at the Hay Festival on Sunday.

"Maybe people at the very top of the BBC do, I don't know. Maybe they do. But none of the people who are making programs do."

The publicly-owned broadcaster has had to deal with copious accusations of pandering to both the political left and right.

Comment: And just recently: Thousands came out to see Corbyn yesterday but you wouldn't know that from watching the BBC

The Qatari government reportedly paid $1 billion to Iranian Shia militants and the Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group (a Syrian affiliate of al-Qaeda) to release the members of the nation's royal family they were holding hostage.

A total of 26 members of the Qatari royal family were allegedly locked up by the Kataib Hezbollah militants in Iran after they were kidnapped in 2015 while on hunting trip in Iraq, the Financial Times newspaper reported Monday, citing sources on both sides of the hostage deal.

According to the newspaper, after almost two years of negotiations, Doha allegedly decided to pay some $700 million to the Iranian Shia militants groups, and between $200 million and $300 million was paid to the Islamist groups in Syria, mostly to the Tahrir al-Sham.

Iraqi forces, leading a vigorous battle to liberate Mosul from ISIS, has been exposed torturing and abusing their captives suspected of having terrorists links, according to a photographer who has been embedded with an elite unit of the Iraqi interior ministry.

Having worked alongside the elite Emergency Response Division (ERD) in Iraq, freelance photographer Ali Arkady documented how, in their battle against jihadists, Iraqi security forces resorted to the very tactics that are comparable to the brutal practices of their nemesis, IS.

The photographer, who earned the Iraqi soldiers' trust to cover the Mosul frontline, was allowed to witness some of the "interrogation" sessions, intended to force confessions from prisoners of war accused of affiliation with the terrorist group.
