Britain must come up with a new strategy combining spies, tech firms, police and communities to deal with the unprecedented danger now posed by extremism, the UK's top counterterrorism officer says.

Mark Rowley, the Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner, outlined his plan to radically improve counterterrorism capabilities in the wake of the London Bridge attack on Saturday in which seven people died and 48 were injured.

The London attack followed the May 22 suicide bombing at Manchester Arena and a similar attack using a vehicle and knives on Westminster Bridge in March.

"In nine weeks, we've had five plots foiled and three successful attacks. That is completely different to anything we have seen for a long time. As the prime minister has indicated, we're going to need to do some things differently," Rowley told a press conference.

"We're going to have to think again about the next iteration of our police and security service model, which has constantly had to innovate over many decades."

Comment: There is a lot more in the 'new strategy' that will be needed to combat terrorism:

Tillerson: Trump was clear I should try and restore US-Russia ties

The US president instructed his secretary of state to try and mend the relationship with Russia, despite the hype in Washington, Rex Tillerson told journalists. The relationship between the two world powers is currently at its lowest in decades.

"The president's been clear to me: do not let what's happened over here in the political realm prevent you from the work that you need to do on this relationship and he's been quite clear with me... that we might make progress," Tillerson said during a visit to New Zealand on Tuesday, as cited by Reuters.

During his election campaign, President Donald Trump said Washington was interested in having better relations with Russia, which fanned accusations by his political opponents that he was secretly collaborating with Moscow.

Deutsche Bank trader has admitted guilt: Megabanks conspired to rig precious metals markets

gold silver manipulation
After months of "smoking guns" and conspiracy theory dismissals, a Singapore-based Deutsche Bank trader (at the center of fraud allegations) finally confirmed (by admitting guilt) what many have suspected - the biggest banks in the world have conspired to rig precious metals markets.

The Deutsche Bank trader, David Liew, pleaded guilty in federal court in Chicago to conspiring to spoof gold, silver, platinum and palladium futures, according to court papers. Bloomberg notes that spoofing involves traders placing orders that they never intend to fill, in an attempt to manipulate the price.

A Russian Su-27 fighter jet was deployed to intercept a US B-52 strategic bomber over the Baltic Sea as the American warplane was flying along the Russian border, the Russian Defense Ministry reports.

Russia's air defense detected the aircraft on Tuesday morning at around 7:00 GMT, the statement said. The Su-27 of the Russian Baltic Fleet was deployed in response and shadowed the American aircraft after identifying it, as the bomber was flying in neutral airspace over the Baltic Sea along the border, the ministry said.

After the American warplane left the airspace near Russia, the Russian fighter jet returned to its base of deployment, the statement said.

Duterte's martial law labelled 'unconstitutional' by opposition parties

Duterte
© Maxim Shemetov / ReutersPhilippine President Rodrigo Duterte
Opposition parties in the Philippines have branded President Rodrigo Duterte's imposition of martial law as unconstitutional and has asked the Supreme Court to rule against it.

Duterte declared military rule on the southern island of Mindanao on May 23 after hundreds of militants from the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) linked Maute Group began fighting government forces in the city of Marawi following attempts to arrest their leader Isnilon Hapilon.

Fierce fighting has raged for nearly two weeks and has claimed 178 people lives so far.

Comment: ISIS attacks the Philippines, hundreds are dying, and these people say there's no reason for martial law? Sounds like the exact same dynamic as the world saw in Syria and Libya.

Pentagon extends its 'occupation zone' in Southern Syria

US soldiers in Syria
I wrote Friday:
The obvious play for the Russian-backed Syrians is to neutralize Americans at al-Tanf by giving their base a 55 kilometer-wide berth and punch through to the Iraqi border further east. Such a maneuver would end US dreams of al-Tanf as a staging point for a push into the Euphrates valley and make it into an irrelevant, isolated outpost in the desert.

But the question is: is the Pentagon capable of resigning itself to its fate? Is it capable of sitting idly by, doing nothing, as its forces in southern Syria are made irrelevant, or will it escalate (yet again) before that happens?

30 civilians reported dead after US-led coalition airtstrikes near Raqqa

Thick smoke and flames erupt from an airstrike by the U.S.-led coalition in Kobani, Syria, as seen from a hilltop on the outskirts of Suruc, at the Turkey-Syria border.
Over 30 civilians from Syrian Raqqa were killed as a result of the US-led coalition's airstrikes on the Islamic State (IS, outlawed in Russia) terrorist group's targets in the city's neighborhood, media reported Monday.

The civilians were shelled, while they were trying to leave the territories controlled by terrorists via the Euphrates river, the Lebanese Al Mayadeen broadcaster said.

On Saturday, Syrian state media reported that at least 43 civilians were killed as a result of a US-led coalition airstrike in Syria's Raqqa. The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned the airstrikes and sent two letters the UN secretary general and the head of the Security Council, in which the US-led coalition's actions were compared to the Daesh crimes.

Iran ready to export food to Qatar after Gulf States cut ties with Doha

Iran is ready to deliver any kind of food products to Qatar as the Persian Gulf states cut ties with Doha over a recent diplomatic rift, Chairman of Iran's Union of Exporters of Agricultural Products Reza Nourani said on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Saudi Arabia, alongside Bahrain, Egypt, Libya and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) cut off diplomatic relations with Qatar amid a row over the latter's alleged support of terrorism. The initiative was later joined by Yemen and the Maldives. All the countries involved in this diplomatic row, apart from the Maldives, are Arab League member states.

"We are ready to export any kind of foodstuffs to Qatar in light of the sanctions imposed by the Persian Gulf countries," Nourani said as quoted by the Fars news agency.

Media reported earlier in the day that trucks carrying foods were stuck at the border in Saudi Arabia unable to enter Qatar.

The Saudi-Qatar diplomatic row: Crown Prince bin Salman's latest folly?

Saudi Defense Minister and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

Precipitate and unexplained decision to sever diplomatic ties with Qatar and impose an air and land blockade of the country bears the hallmarks of the erratic decision making of Saudi Arabia's Deputy Crown Prince and de facto ruler, Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

There has been considerable debate about the reasons for the extraordinary diplomatic and economic attack on Qatar organised by Saudi Arabia today. What makes it baffling is that there is no real explanation for it.

It is well known that the Gulf's two Wahhabi monarchies don't get on well with each other. The Saudis and the Qataris have regularly competed with each for influence, for example by backing different groups of Jihadis in Libya and Syria. Qatar is also a major supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, opposes the Saudi backed Egyptian government which came to power through a military coup launched against Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's democratically elected President who was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, and has supported the Palestinian group Hamas, which is affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood, and which has also in the past had close connections with Saudi Arabia's enemies, Syria and Iran.

MSM propaganda turns against itself: Family of bleeding "Boy in Ambulance" from Aleppo tells truth

Who doesn't remember Omar Daqneesh, the 5-year old boy from Syria who was photographed with his face badly injured, resulting from what was described a "Russian airstrike" in the then besieged Eastern Aleppo back in August 2016?

Despite showing obvious signs of child exploitation and inhumane treatment, the photo nevertheless conquered the world, thanks to the mainstream media.

Although having lost his elder brother, the boy is now living a normal life with his family in the liberated Aleppo.

The dad of the the boy whose photo was used by the mainstream media in a propaganda war against the Syrian-Iranian-Russian alliance tells the truth about the incident.

Comment: Another interview, courtesy of Sputnik:

Omran's father told RT:
"He only sustained minor injuries, but the militants exaggerated this fact. They said on numerous occasions via their media that he died, until finally admitting that he's alive. They are not to be trusted," Mohammad said.

He described how on that tragic day when their house was destroyed and he rushed to rescue his family from the rubble, the so called White Helmets simply stood by and filmed his son in order to make that famous video.

"While I was rescuing my family the militants filmed my kin getting out of the house, in order to use these images for propaganda... I never had any dealings with their organizations and I never accepted their so called humanitarian aid," the father explained.
