PIT BULL ATTACK
An inquest docket has been opened after a 28-year-old woman died after she was viciously attacked by a group of dogs while walking in Durban South.

It's understood she was mauled by three canines in Woodlands on Thursday night.

Police say the woman was found lying on the side of the road at the corner of Atherstone Place and Norwich Crescent.

The victim later succumbed to her injuries.

Eyewitness recalls horror

A motorist who witnessed the attack says she initially thought the dogs were tearing at a bin bag but realised it was a person when she stopped.

She says she tried hooting and driving closer to scare the animals away, but they didn't let go.

"Then my nephew started screaming out for help. So that's when some of the neighbours came out. But at that point as well, that's when I posted on our Crime Eye group to say there's dogs that are attacking a child, because at that time I thought it was a child. But two minutes later after the post, then Durban South Security arrived. The security guy also tried to do what I did.

"[The] dogs were not letting go. Instead, [they were now] dragging her towards the pavement.]

Ward 64 councillor Norman Gilbert has blamed irresponsible dog ownership and poor enforcement of municipal bylaws for allowing dangerous dogs to roam the streets.

"There's a big majority of the community that are not responsible, so they don't properly secure their pets in their garden. And what happens at night is these dogs will get out, and they start roaming the street. We've had instances in the past where dogs have actually mauled and killed other dogs and with the last one we had, someone made a comment and said, 'How long before they get a hold of a child or, or a person?' And lo and behold, we now have that situation."

Gilbert says he's called a meeting with law enforcement, the SPCA and community activists to discuss ways to prevent another tragedy.
