Flashback Latin America's Wikileaks Files

US diplomatic cables reveal a coordinated assault against Latin America's left-wing governments. Earlier this summer, the world watched Greece try to resist a disastrous neoliberal diktat and get a painful thrashing in the process.

When Greece's left government decided to hold a national referendum on the troika-imposed austerity program, the European Central Bank retaliated by restricting liquidity for Greek banks. This triggered a prolonged bank closure and plunged Greece further into recession.

Though Greek voters ended up massively rejecting austerity, Germany and the European creditor cartel were able to subvert democracy and get exactly what they wanted: complete submission to their neoliberal agenda.

In the last decade and a half, a similar fight against neoliberalism has been waged across the breadth of an entire continent, and mostly outside of the public eye. Although Washington initially sought to quash all dissent, often employing even fiercer tactics than those used against Greece, Latin America's resistance to the neoliberal agenda has in large part been successful. It's an epic tale that's gradually coming to light thanks to continued exploration of the massive trove of US diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks.

Comment: One country or many, the playbook was pretty much the same. Uncle Sam hid within the NGOs and used these puppet faces to infiltrate governments and populations, offering destruction disguised as support and rescue. That was then. Today...little has changed.

Afghanistan: Trump at crossroads, choose wisely!

Troops Afghan

The next phase of the battle in Central Asia has already begun. For months now a plan has been forming to reconcile the Pakistani government, the Afghan government in Kabul and the Taliban to bring about some semblance of order to the country by driving ISIS recruiters out and cutting down the heroin trade.

That plan is opposed by the U.S. Deep State because it is the long-term lynch pin to the success of China's One Belt, One Road project and China's $56 billion investment into Pakistan known as the China Pakistan Economic Corridor.

The ouster by the Supreme Court of Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif puts any further negotiations on hold for the next year until a new leader of Pakistan's civilian government can be elected.

Pakistan was being actively elevated by Russia and China to take the lead in the dialogue, much to the consternation of India, because it must. As neighbors, they have the most to gain from coordination of policy. In doing this, however, it is elevating the civilian government in international relations at the expense of the powerful Pakistani military who have strong ties with Saudi Arabia. With Sharif's refusal to assist the Saudis in their disastrous war in Yemen or support their diplomatic isolation of Qatar, it really was a matter of time before the military made a move behind the scenes to throw the civilian government into turmoil.

So far, there seems to be little upheaval at the political level. The parliament moved quickly to elect an interim Prime Minister from Sharif's own PML-N Party, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. But this will set back the negotiations between Islamabad and Kabul.

Moreover, Russia has opened up dialogues with both the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and the Taliban in order to seek an alliance between them. Now, the question is how much farther are U.S. military and intelligence assets willing to push things while they have the President boxed in on all sides in the White House?

Comment: If Trump were to just defund the Afghanistan conundrum, that simple stroke would curve this part of history in a totally new direction. Plusses would be: removal of US forces, better relations with China and Russia, leaving Afghanistan to self-fix, creating business instead of war, curbing illegal narcotics trade and traffic, band-aiding the outflowing leakage of taxpayer money for an unending military debacle, upgrading world opinion of evil USA, and so on. Perhaps the pen IS mightier than the sword. Will he use it?

Global markets dive after Trump's fiery warning to N. Korea

Oriental stock sign

US President Donald Trump's vow to unleash 'fire and fury' on North Korea if it continued to threaten the United States sent global stock markets lower on Wednesday.

Britain's FTSE100, Germany's DAX, French CAC and other stocks in Europe dropped more than a percent, following falls in Asia and on Wall Street. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 share index fell 1.3 percent to its lowest since June 1, while South Korea's KOSPI index plunged 1.1 percent to seven-week lows.

US stock index futures are down, with the S&P 500 predicted to open 0.4 percent lower on Wednesday.

"Trump's comments about North Korea have created nervousness, and the fear is if the President really means what he said: 'fire and fury,'" said Naeem Aslam, chief market analyst at Think Markets in London, as quoted by Reuters.

While financial markets have become accustomed to aggressive rhetoric from Pyongyang, Washington has traditionally taken a more diplomatic approach. The tone of Trump's warning this time around has shaken investors.

"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States," Trump told reporters on Tuesday. "They will be met with fire, fury and, frankly, power the likes of which this world has never seen before."

Comment: "Trump unplugged!' Seems the markets were paying attention and took the plunge.

China sidelines old powers in Africa with economic ties, military base

The opening of China's first military base in Africa gives an additional foothold in a region where it already has much sway, thanks to economic ties. Some commentators see Africa as Beijing's chance to preserve its manufacturing dominance for future generations.

In a joint ceremony with a local honor guard, Chinese troops last week opened their new naval base in Djibouti, a tiny nation in East Africa which already leases land to several facilities of foreign militaries. The Chinese troops are stationed right next to the Pentagon's only permanent base in Africa, as well as Japanese, French and Italian forces.

Shortly before the opening, Beijing suggested that it may deploy its troops on Djibouti's border with Eritrea in the north, where the two African nations contest sovereignty over a mountain and an island. The hypothetical deployment would fill a vacuum left behind by some 450 Qatari peacekeeping troops, who were withdrawn in June amid the kingdom's diplomatic spat with other Arab nations.

Beijing stressed that the deployment has nothing to do with the opening of the base and would only be done under a UN mandate and with both parties to the conflict agreeing to this mediation.

Pawns in regional power struggles: The myth of the moderate Kurdish rebel

Kurdistan separatist fighter
© AP/Burhan OzbiliciA Kurdistan separatist fighter waits at his position near Degala, Iraq. Oct. 16, 1996 during fighting between rival Kurdish factions.
In Part I of independent analyst Sarah Abed's three-part analysis for MintPress News, Abed began exposing the modern day Kurdish/Israeli alliance that both parties have tried to keep hidden in order to avoid drawing the public's attention to their ultimate plan, as well as the U.S.' use of Kurdish factions in destabilizing the Middle East.

The Kurds have engaged in such relationships in part because of internal divisions and disunity, which have also made it difficult to fulfill their goal of establishing a fully autonomous Kurdistan spanning over the four countries they currently occupy.

Abed also examined the Syrian government's attempts at keeping the country united by addressing and implementing constitutional changes that benefit the Kurds - attempts that have still failed to convince separatist Kurds to abandon their goal of Balkanizing and illegally confiscating parts of Syria at the cost of the people who reside there.

The US navy destroyer, which sailed closed to the island claimed by Beijing in the South China Sea, has violated international law and endangered China's national security, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

"The US destroyer's actions have violated Chinese and international laws, as well as severely harmed China's sovereignty and security," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said in a statement.

"China is very displeased with this and will bring up the issue with the US side," the statement reads.

Construction of a new railway linking Malaysia's east and west has begun as part of China's ambitious New Silk Road project. At an estimated cost of $13 billion, it's the largest development project in Malaysia.

The planned 688 kilometers East Coast Rail Link will connect the South China Sea at the Thai border in the east with the strategic shipping routes of the Straits of Malacca in the west. China has claimed many parts of the South China Sea.

"The China government has attached great importance to China-Malaysia relations and has always considered Malaysia a dear neighbor and trustworthy partner who is committed to seeking mutually beneficial cooperation and common development in the country," Chinese State Councilor Wang Yong said at the ceremony on Wednesday.

The China Communications Construction Company will build the railway. It will run passenger trains at a maximum speed of 160 kph and goods trains at a maximum speed of 80 kph. The line is due to be completed in 2024.

Comment: While China is making history, the U.S. is becoming history.

War criminal John McCain slams Trump on Afghanistan, calls for more bombing

Trump John McCain

Senator John McCain has blasted President Donald Trump over a lack of strategy in America's 17-year war in Afghanistan, and filed his own plan for the Senate to vote on. It involves more troops, more bombing and an enduring US presence in the country.

"Now, nearly seven months into President Trump's administration, we've had no strategy at all as conditions on the ground have steadily worsened," McCain, who is the chairman of the Senate's Armed Services Committee, said in a statement Thursday. "The thousands of Americans putting their lives on the line in Afghanistan deserve better from their commander-in-chief."

Comment: McCain has contributed to massive damage to the world, and it's time for him to call it quits. It's quite obvious he has a deep hatred toward the world, and perhaps such malice has contributed to his recent diagnosis of brain cancer.

Propaganda: 'We're concerned about possible North Korean missile strike' says Alaska senator

Missile
© ABC News
Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) said he is seriously concerned about a possible North Korean missile strike on his state as well as the rest of the United States.

"There's concern, but there's also pride," Sullivan said on Fox News's "The Story" Tuesday. "Alaska is the cornerstone of our nation's missile defense."

President Trump warned North Korea Tuesday that it would "be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before" if it continued to make threats about nuclear attacks. North Korea is reportedly considering a missile strike against the U.S. territory Guam after Trump's comments.

Sullivan said that while he is concerned over the escalating tensions, the missile defense battalion stationed in Alaska "is literally protecting the country."

Comment: Thus giving more fuel to the U.S. warmongering ideology and their money-making corporate machine. What a shameless lapdog.

Italy invades Libya using UN puppet Serraj as justification

italian naval patrol
If you asked any Libyan if they thought Italy would ever be allowed back in Libya after the horrible crimes, theft and mass killings committed against Libya by the Italian occupation starting in 1910 and lasting until 1947, they would say that you had lost your mind. Italy under Berlusconi agreed to pay some billions in reparations to Libya for their past crimes. Of course when the attack on Libya was started in 2011, Italy jumped on board because they knew if Libya was destroyed it would erase that debt, which it did.

The great Libyan Jamahiriya developed for the Libyan people since 1969 under Ghadafi gave the Libyan people for the first time in their history a share in their country's wealth. They received back the land stolen by Italy, free health care, free education - through PhD, monetary gifts when married, new homes costing 10% of your salary for 20 years and then yours, first car at 1/2 price, gasoline at 44 cents a gallon, complete security (no militias, almost no crimes), women were emancipated in the 1970's by Ghadafi and were doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, house wives, in the military, etc. Libya had become the most developed country in Africa, going from the poorest, least developed in 1969 to the top under Ghadafi in 42 years. Libya was not part of the Zionists' fiat money debt system. They had their own money and their own banks and no debt.
