Germany pulls forces out of Incirlik as Turkey marches on Kurds in Syria

In further sign of growing estrangement between the West and Turkey, Germany pulls its forces out of Incirlik as Turkey sends troops to Syria to fight the Kurds.

Today has brought a cluster of news emphasising the growing estrangement between Turkey and the West.

Turkish President Erdogan has condemned Albanian expansionism in the Balkans despite the implicit encouragement this has been getting from the West, which has been quietly encouraging Albania's 'Greater Albania' project in order to weaken the influence in the Balkans of Serbia and above all of Russia.

Will the Arctic become the next 'South China Sea'?

The US is thinking about how to equip their icebreakers in the Arctic in order to protect their natural resources potential, and encroachment by Russia and China, writes the Asia Times. However, according to experts, this can affect long-term cooperation of these countries, as US interests in the region are much less than that of Russia.

In late May, the commandant of the US Coast Guard Admiral warned US lawmakers that America may need to equip icebreakers with anti-aircraft missiles to "protect state resources" in the Arctic.

Today in the Arctic, there are two icebreakers at the disposal of the US Coast Guard - "they are functioning, but do not always work." One of them is 40 years old and almost "begs to be scrapped." The US needs new icebreakers. However, according to some analysts, if the US were to suddenly start putting missiles on them, it could undermine cooperation with Russia and China, especially in the field of search and rescue, and environmental research.

Macron sees no legitimate successor to Assad in Syria

macron
President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday he saw no legitimate successor to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and France no longer considered his departure a pre-condition to resolving the six-year-old conflict.

He said Assad was an enemy of the Syrian people, but not of France and that Paris' priority was fighting terrorist groups and ensuring Syria did not become a failed state.

His comments were in stark contrast to those of the previous French administration and echo Moscow's stance that there is no viable alternative to Assad.

"The new perspective that I have had on this subject is that I have not stated that Bashar al-Assad's departure is a pre-condition for everything because nobody has shown me a legitimate successor," Macron said in an interview with eight European newspapers.

"My lines are clear: Firstly, a complete fight against all the terrorist groups. They are our enemies," he said, adding attacks that killed 230 people in France had come from the region. "We need everybody's cooperation, especially Russia, to eradicate them."

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed seasoned Russian diplomat, Vladimir Voronkov, to head its recently created Counterterrorism Office. Voronkov had served as Moscow's representative to UN international organizations in Vienna before his new high-level appointment.
Voronkov "will provide strategic leadership to UN counterterrorism efforts, participate in the decision-making process of the UN and ensure that the cross-cutting origins and impact of terrorism are reflected in [its] work," Guterres' deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said while announcing the appointment.
The diplomat, who has more than 30 years experience with the Russian foreign service, working primarily within the UN, will now hold the title of under-secretary-general.

Comment: With the UN's track record it's surprising they didn't pick ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to head the office! In any case, it seems some sense prevailed in picking a Russian to do the job.

Queen Elizabeth delivers extraordinary snub to Theresa May

Queen Elizabeth Prime Minister Theresa May
Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Theresa May
Last time this happened, the government collapsed

In scenes not witnessed since 1974, the Queen's Speech has been reduced to little more than a press conference. The super-casual Queen's speech is a snub Her Majesty has never deployed since, until now. The echoes of history are loud and clear.

Deal or no deal

Having lost her party's majority in the 8 June general election, Theresa May has been clinging to Number 10 like moss. First, she announced she had done a deal with the homophobic, anti-abortion, climate-change deniers of the DUP in order to get her audience with the Queen on 9 June. Shortly after, we discovered there was no deal. One day later, on 10 June, the May team again announced its deal with the DUP was complete. The DUP once again informed the press that no such deal had been done, and May's office stated the announcement of a deal was made 'in error'.

The US Empire's Exploitation Of Children In Propaganda War Against Syria Continues

In December 2016, filmmakers in Egypt were arrested in the process of staging an Aleppo video with two children: the girl was meant to look injured, and the boy was to vilify both Russia and Syria.

Even the corporate media reported on it, including: "The girl's dress, covered in red paint, was what caught the attention of a police officer driving by, the ministry said."

The incidences of fakery and hoaxes, however, does not end there.

Also in December, the scene of a 'Girl running to survive after her family had been killed' was said to be in Aleppo. In reality, it was a scene from a Lebanese music video, which someone at some point clearly chose to depict as in Aleppo, for the same anti-Russian, anti-Assad vilification purposes.

In November 2014, a clip dubbed 'Syrian hero boy' went viral, viewed over 5 million times already by mid-November. The clip showed what appeared to be a little boy saving his sister from sniper gunfire, and was assumed to have been in Syria.

Neil Clark interview on media propaganda: John Pilger discusses Jeremy Corbin and Vanessa Beeley talks Syrian war coverage

john pilger
Documentarian John Pilger.
He has been defying the Establishment gatekeepers and telling us the truth about what's really going on in the world for over 50 years. He has covered wars around the world from Vietnam to Iraq, and is also an award-winning documentary filmmaker. For many, John Pilger is the journalists' journalist, and he came into the Sputnik studio to give us his thoughts on the state of the press today.

And, US-led airstrikes on Raqqa have, as the UN observed, led to a 'staggering loss of civilian life.' The US-led coalition has also admitted to using white phosphorus, but the media reaction in the West has been muted, to say the least. It's all a far cry from the headlines when Syrian forces - with Russian support - were trying to liberate Aleppo in December. Vanessa Beeley has reported from Syria during the current conflict many times, so we invited her into the studio to discuss these glaring double standards in the media.

Russia has condemned the new round of US sanctions as a "continuation of the trend set by the Obama administration aimed at ruining relations between our countries" and has promptly canceled a scheduled meeting of senior Russian and American diplomats.

The US Treasury expanded the sanction list on Tuesday, adding 38 individuals and organizations over alleged Russian involvement in the Ukrainian crisis.

Russia vowed to undertake "practical retaliatory measures" over the sanctions and canceled a scheduled meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and US Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon.

The two officials planned to discuss outstanding issues relating to Russia-US relations on June 23, but Washington's new move has led Moscow to question the US's integrity and its assertion that it wants dialogue with Russia.

The growing NATO presence in the Baltic and Eastern Europe demonstrates "blatant unwillingness" of certain Western states to stop "pursuing an anti-Russian agenda" and forces Moscow to beef up its border defenses, according to Russia's defense minister.

The situation on Russia's western borders has a "tendency to deteriorate," Sergey Shoigu said during an on-site meeting of the Defense Ministry Collegium in Kaliningrad on Wednesday.

"It is related to the growing military activity of NATO countries in Eastern Europe," Shoigu said.

The NATO buildup includes the modernization of airfields, ports and other military sites, as well as the deployment of new elements of the US missile defense, the minister added.

Netanyahu 'honored' to build new illegal apartheid colony on stolen land

Israel has begun constructing the first new settlement in the occupied West Bank in 25 years, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu deeming it an "honor" to build the outposts - despite the new tract being completely contrary to international law.
"After decades, I have the honor to be the first Prime Minister to build a settlement in Judea and Samaria [the occupied West Bank's Biblical name] — there was not and will never be as good a government for the settlements as ours," Netanyahu bragged.
The construction marks the first entirely new settlement in the occupied territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 1992, and is intended to house residents of the West Bank outpost of Amona, demolished by the Israeli military in February.

The settlements in Amona were built on private Palestinian land, and the Israeli High Court ruled them illegal — Netanyahu's government faced losing a sizeable Jewish population in the occupied territories, and rather than readmit affected individuals to Israel, the administration opted to construct an entirely new living space.
